"However, if it is analyzed from the view of energy cost and life-cycle cost, the energy-saving benefit can offset ~he increase of initial investment. An analysis method based on life-cycle concept was developed to calcu- late the energy cost of residential building flats. Several uncertain factors were included into the model, making it more accurate to reflect practical situation. The model was solved using the software DeST and applied to one resi- dential building project in Shanghai. The case study shows that the initial investment (cost) is paid back during the operational phase through less consumption of energy. It further indicates that the investment recovery period is between 10 and 19 years which are acceptable to households and developers in China.展开更多

Through the ETP (Economic Transformation Programme), major projects launched are expected to provide a great catalyst for the economy, and may become the platform for increasing the use of automation and highly enhanced plants and machineries in the construction industry. Innovations in most countries are mostly driven by the need to find revolutionary solutions to problems, such as a shortage of skilled labor, decreasing quality of product and processes, inferior working conditions, declining productivity and increasing costs of labor and materials. Automation and robotics technologies encompass a wide range of innovative technologies using technologically advanced machineries to improve the speed and efficiency of a given process. This paper discusses the readiness of a developing country in embracing construction automation and robotics, by exploring industry perception, suggested practices and barriers to its implementation using a questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews directed at Malaysian construction finns of contractors, specialist sub-contractors, developers and consultants. The findings show that the Malaysian construction industry is ready, to a certain extent, for implementing the technologies in limited areas such as prefabrication and assembly and in the design, planning and costing phases.展开更多

If CAD technology is first innovation of information technology in construction industry, then the emergence of the BIM technology shall fully deserved to be treated as a second innovation in construction industry. As a new technology which have been introduced to China in recent years, BIM technology already had its major application in foreigner countries .This paper focuses on the current status of BIM technology application in our country, especially on some small and medium enterprises using the traditional BIM technology to handle the project which have complex usage, creative deign and cost limitation. Firstly,we take a deep analysis on the initial application situation. Then we go through the practical application and analyse what benefit can be given to a project from BIM technology. Finally, analyse the problems and solutions in BIM application with consideration of Chinese building engineering development. Only after a careful analysis, a deep understanding of BIM, we can fully understand this new technology and make BIM to give its value to construction project.展开更多
