A Contrastive Analysis of Three English Translation of Camel Xiangzi from the Perspective of Functional Equivalence

Nida＇ s Functional Equivalence Theory has made a great contribution to the translation industry, which means the translation should reach the functional equivalence between two languages rather than the rigid correspondence of the texts. Functional Equivalence Theory includes stylistic equivalence, glossary equivalence and passage equivalence. The literary work selected in this paper is a famous classic novel, Camel Xiangzi, in which the features of the language employed by author are fizll of＂Chinese characteristics.＂ Just because of the characteristics, the task is more difficult in the process of the wanslating. In this paper, it makes a contrastive analysis of the translations to the fourth chapter of Camel Xiangzi by using Nida＇s Functional Equivalence Theory. There are three kinds of English versions, which were selected from a Chinese-American translator Shi Xiaojing＇s translation Camel Xiangzi, American translator Evan King＇ s translation Rickshaw Boy and American translator Jean M.James＇ s translation Richshaw： the Novel Lo-t＇o Hsinang Tz~ Due to limited words, this paper mainly analyzes the novel from the glossary, the stylistic and the passage equivalence. The result is that Jean M.James＇ s translation maximizes to achieve Functional Equivalence Theory, it also tries to reach formal equivalence, and her Wanslafion compensates for lack of the theory. What＇ s more, it verifies the feasibility and directive significance in translation of functional equivalence.

Chinese Left-Wing Literature in the Vision of an American Left-wing Writer

As one with great fame of writing China and Chinese people in war time, Anna Louise Strong, has the experience of communicating with Chinese left-wing writers, viewing their dramas works and reading their novels. From her perspective, Chinese left-wing literature was featured by its revolution and popularity; Chinese left-wing writers were busy with creating different genres to get every Chinese＇s involvement in the anti-Japanese war in 1930s and participation in the construction of new China in 1940s. Hence, they were multifarious in their identity because they cared more than literature in a turbulent time. From what she presented, China, as a cultural otherness, was the existent utooia that fulfilled her radical nolitical dream of communism.

The Third Space Identity Construction： A Narrative Inquiry into a Chinese College EFL Learner’s Experience of Online Intercultural Writing Exchange

Drawing on in-depth interviews with a Chinese EFL learner, this qualitative study explores her identity changes throughout her engagement in the third space-the online intercultural writing exchange. The findings show that her productive construction of the third space is marked by a transformation from a reticent student to an open thought sharer and her claim of a legitimate ownership of using English as a global language. A split is exposed between her newly acquired English rhetorical conventions and her deeply rooted perceptions in the Chinese context. It is suggested by the study that EFL learners be provided greater opportunities to explore language as both a linguistic system and a sociocultural practice where they can exercise their agency and expand the range of identities.

The Dilemma and Redemption of Culture： A Way to Interpret the Role of Intellectuals during the May 4th and Yan＇an Period＊

The status and meaning of culture is closely related to the modem China＇s revolution. Terry Eagleton＇s cultural derivation provides a basis for redefining culture in the process of Chinese revolution. According to this, the new cultural movement in May 4th and the Chinese Marxism aesthetics in Yan＇an have taken on the common issues like national and ideological transformation, whereas they have their own historical phase and thus the historical relativity characteristics. Julia Lovell as a Faithful Rewriter in Translating Chinese Literary Text： The Version of A Dictionary of Maqiao as a Case in Point

As a professional translator, Chinese history lecturer and academic writer, Julia Lovell has made a lot of contributions in translating modem Chinese literary works into English. But the field of translation studies has not given due attention to her so far. Based on her own practice and understanding of translation, she presented the notion of faithful recreation as her translation principle. This article sheds light on how she implemented her translation notion in the process of her translation, taking her version of A Dictionary of Maqiao as a case to examine the effectiveness of her work under the guidance of faithful recreation. Discussion on the Writing Techniques and Female Image Creation of Ling Shuhua＇s Novels

In the female writers of ＂5.4＂ , the quantity of Ling Shuhua＇ s works is not large, but the achievement isn＇t low because of her practiced skill and acute observation. By taking the novels for example, it is a reflection on three aspects： a kind of sad feeling under the poetic charm; the contrast of backward and new thought; the concealed comment and revealed value judgment. From these contrasts, people can know the Chinese female＇ s true state in the transition and the writer＇ s skill of fiction creation.

Cultural and Academic Meetings in the Writing Classroom： China and the West

With growing numbers of Chinese students entering Western universities, cultural understanding is of increasing importance, not least in higher education. Without a good understanding of the academic conventions of Western universities, Chinese students, and undergraduates in particular, are at a disadvantage in the multi-cultural classroom. Lack of knowledge of structural influences on higher education, including teacher-student relations, reference management practices, and assessment procedures, are likely to lead to failure and disappointment. This paper, which is based on writing workshops conducted at Beijing University and in Sweden （Kristianstad University and Linnaeus University） in 2014, focuses primarily on writing practices and conventions because written texts are the main means of assessment in higher education. Addressing four key problems encountered by Chinese undergraduate writers in Western universities, namely lack of familiarity with the structure of academic papers, lack of focus on relevant issues, copying and pasting without giving proper reference, and inadequate understanding and mastery of the conventions of academic English, this paper argues for greater awareness of cultural differences between the Chinese and Western systems of education. Not until this has been achieved can Chinese students realize their full potential at Western universities.

Localization of Free Verse in China： A Case Study of Bing Xin＇s Short Poems

Intercultures play an important role in localization of translation. They are the essential reference resources for those who are translators as well as writers in their literary translation or creation. Translators contribute to the extension of source culture and in target culture by means ofintercultures to form new localized cultural paradigms. Bing Xin＇ s creation of the short free verse in the vernacular Chinese was influenced by Hu shih＇s new literature ideas and Zheng Zhenduo＇s translation of Stray Birds, a famous poetry anthology of Tagore. Through her translation, she borrowed new literary paradigms from foreign languages and successfully converted them into more acceptable ones in Chinese new literature. The paper, from the perspectives of Localization and Intercultures by Anthony Pym, explores the effects which Hu Shih and Zheng Zhenduo made upon Bing Xin＇s poetry translation and creation in the trend of poetry localization in the May Fourth Movement, and analyzes the interactions between Bing Xin＇s poetry creation and her poetry translation.

No Dream, No Future： A Study on Aesthetic Dimensions of＂Chinese Dream＂ and the Task of Literary Critics

This article believes that ＂Chinese Dream＂ has three dimensions： First, ＂Chinese Dream＂ is the inevitable demands of Chinese reconstruction and it is the deepest desire of Chinese nation since the Chinese modern history. Second, the modernism of socialism with Chinese feature is the process of Chinese modernism. Third, the third theoretical dimension, 1 believe, is the ideal of socialism. I would like to take the film ＂Lost＂ and ＂Peking Monk＂ as examples and analyze the specific form of expression. This article is going to indicate in the end that ＂the revolution of aesthetics＂ and the assignments of critics, which can be recognized as the intuitive ability, could merge the historical affair and the human nature, which literature comprise, together and deliver deeper analyses and appraise The mission of critics is not only to distinctly emerge the aesthetic form of the literal works, but also analyze and seize the ＂aesthetic form＂ of them, that is to say, their mission is to find the aesthetic meanings of aesthetic expression from commonage in order to achieve the goal of leading and stimulating people ensuing the consciousness and liberation of culture. That is the most important mission and responsibility of Marxist literal criticism and literal critics. This is a rather tough task and refers to the new understanding and attitude to the relative questions of literature and culture. In the eyes of some self-complacent intellectuals, the responsibility for literature and critics is the ＂aesthetic entertainment＂ and ＂spiritual redemption＂. The significance of Marxist Aesthetics lies in that it upgrades the general ＂literal principle＂ and ＂aesthetic principle＂ in to a level of social development and national deliverance, and also it regards whether the literature having the function of cultural libration as the more pivotal content. Analysis of publication dissemination of Chinese present current literature work English translation and research methodologies

As a systematic work, there are very close links between the various aspects of the English translation of Chinese modern and contemporary literary works, whether they are translated into the main body, translated content and other links, or a specific translation approach, are not segmentation. Many translators, sinologists and books, magazines and so on have played a very important role in the process of translating modern and contemporary literary works in China. However with English-Chinese “borrowism” compared with, English work that translates the Chinese present current literature work, no matter in quantity and quality, infi uence and other aspects that the work itself has appear the relative backwardness. In order to promote the modern and contemporary Chinese literary works in the world, it is necessary to analyze and study the English translation of Chinese modern and contemporary literary works and the research methods.

Cultural Flows and Pedagogical Dilemmas: Teaching with Collaborative Learning in the Chinese HE EFL ContextCultural Flows and Pedagogical Dilemmas: Teaching with Collaborative Learning in the Chinese HE EFL Context

This study makes a qualitative inquiry into the use of collaborative learning in Chinese higher education （HE） EFL classrooms with its focus on students＇ experience. It seeks to reveal the dilemmas encountered by considering the cultural aspect of teaching and learning within the Chinese context. Drawing on data sources from 60 students＇ written reflections, 2 groups of post-hoc interviews and the researcher＇s field notes, the study reveals that： 1） the use of collaborative learning conflicts with students＇ formed learning behaviors and grammar- oriented exams; 2） guanxi as an indigenous Chinese sociocultural construct prevails in the language classrooms as a communicative tie among students, which facilitates students＇ interaction and peer collaboration; 3） power differentials, by contrast, engender less interaction and create distance among peers. Notwithstanding these incompatibilities, the study claims that collaborative learning is consonant with the Chinese culture that emphasizes collective orientation and socially appropriate behaviors during interaction. It is concerned with the right way of learning among peers. Finally, the study suggests ways for teacher educators to cope with these dilemmas.

Chinese EFL Learners' Perceptions of Their Experience with Portfolio-Based Writing Assessment:A Case Study

In a case study investigating Chinese EFL university majors＇ perceptions of a portfolio-based writing assessment （PBWA） project, English majors were sampled to find out whether the portfolio method made them more interested in writing and/or improved their writing process and writing strategies. Four sophomores were chosen from among an experimental group at a local university in China. Analysis of data from student journals, interviews and reflective essays showed that taking part in portfolio writing empowered them to take charge of their own learning and motivated them to write better. The students welcomed PBWA as a fairer assessment tool than timed, one-shot essay tests. They held more interest in English writing, improved their writing strategies and shifted their attention from products of writing to process of writing and, thus, preferred scores from PBWA as a more satisfactory indicator of their writing ability.

Metadiscourse Use in L2 Student Essay Writing: A Longitudinal Cross-Contextual Comparison

This paper investigates developmental patterns of metadiscourse use in Chinese students’EAP writing in an English medium university,in comparison with English majors’EFL writing in mainstream state universities and L1 student writing in UK universities.Taking a longitudinal and cross-contextual perspective,the study explores corpora of L1 and L2 student writing gathered from three sources:EAP essays written by Chinese undergraduate students at an English Medium Instruction(EMI)university;argumentative essays written by English majors in the Written English Corpus of Chinese Learners(WECCL);and academic essays of English L1 students from the British Academic Written English(BAWE)corpus.Hyland’s(2005 a)model of metadiscourse was adopted to identify interactive and interactional devices in each corpus,and results were compared between different levels as well as across the corpora to reveal developmental features.Findings show marked differences in metadiscourse use between Chinese EMI students’EAP essays and English major students’EFL essays in mainstream state universities,whereas a similar pattern of use occurred in EAP essays and English L1 student academic essays.Significant changes were also found between different year levels in two L2 essay corpora.The findings suggest that metadiscourse use in L2 writing had developmental trajectories distinctive to different institutional contexts,with EAP instruction in the EMI institution having mixed effects on Chinese students’awareness and use of metadiscourse in essay writing.

Calligraphy and Modern Chinese Writers

Research on modern Chinese literature has achieved results that have attracted wide attention. However, its state of near ＂saturation＂ has placed it in a dilemma with no clear way forward. Finding new academic growth points has become exceptionally important and urgent. The relationship between the ＂culture of calligraphy＂ and ＂modem Chinese writers＂ is virtually a research blank and has so Ihr attracted regrettably little attention. In fact, many modem Chinese writers have had close ties with calligraphy, making important contributions to its collection, creation and scholarly exploration. Conversely, the culture of calligraphy has exerted a profound influence on such things as the mode of existence, textual forms, emotional expression, ways of thought and aesthetic tastes of modem literature. Moreover, an examination of this relationship may stimulate us to reflect more deeply on literature, calligraphy, culture, education and related issues, which may help us gain a larger space for the development of Chinese culture and literature in the new century.
