Village lands tend to be managed at very fine spatial scales (≤ 30 m), with managers both adapting their practices to existing variation in soils and terrain (e.g., fertile plains vs. infertile slopes) and also altering soil fertility and even terrain by terracing, irrigation, fertilizing, and other land use practices. Relationships between fine-scale land management patterns and soil organic carbon (SOC) in the top 30 cm of village soils were studied by sampling soils within fine-scale landscape features using a regionally weighted landscape sampling design across five environmentally distinct sites in China. SOC stocks across China's village regions (5 Pg C in the top 30 cm of 2 ×10^6 km^2) represent roughly 4% of the total SOC stocks in global croplands. Although macroclimate varied from temperate to tropical in this study, SOC density did not vary significantly with climate, though it was negatively correlated with regional mean elevation. The highest SOC densities within landscapes were found in agricultural lands, especially paddy, the lowest SOC densities were found in nonproductive lands, and forest lands tended toward moderate SOC densities. Bue to the high SOC densities of agricultural lands and their predominance in village landscapes, most village SOC was found in agricultural land, except in the tropical hilly region, where forestry accounted for about 45% of the SOC stocks. A surprisingly large portion of village SOC was associated with built structures and with the disturbed lands surrounding these structures, ranging from 〉 18% in the North China Plain to about 9% in the tropical hilly region. These results confirmed that local land use practices, combined with local and regional variation in terrain, were associated with most of the SOC variation within and across China's village landscapes and may be an important cause of regional variation in SOC.展开更多

The walker is vertically inserted in a piezoelectric scanner tube (PST) with its brim laying at on the PST end as the inertial slider (driven by the PST) for the XZ (sample plane) motion. The STM is designed to be capable of searching rare microscopic targets (defects, dopants, boundaries, nano-devices, etc.) in a macroscopic sample area (square millimeters) under extreme conditions (low temperatures, strong magnetic elds, etc.) in which it ts. It gives good atomic resolution images after scanning a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite sample in air at room temperature.展开更多

This paper takes Wuxi Opera, a precious cultural treasure in Jiangsu province, China, for example. We will discuss the difficulties in spreading Wuxi Opera globally and learn the successful globalizing experience from other operas, such as Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera and Sichuan Opera. Considering the important status and rich resources of Peking Opera, we will analyze Peking Opera thoroughly and the most important aspects of Sichuan Opera and Kunqu Opera. By analyzing their translations and globalization process, we believe that Wuxi Opera should make efforts especially in four aspects to make progress in its globalizing campaign.展开更多

The results show that global economy has achieved a substantial growth, and positive progress has been made in poverty eradication, urbanization, and conservation and intensive use of natural resources. However, relevant international conventions and commitments have not yet been completely fulfilled. The paper further analyzes the current major challenges and future trends of global sustainable development. It is argued that there are three major challenges:1) fatal global environmental issues posing an increasing threat to human survival; 2) more and more severe global competition for developing spaces; and 3) issues highlighting global people's livelihood. There are four trends of global sustainable development:1) sustainable development will further turn from concept into global action; 2) green will be the main trend of global development; 3) emerging developing countries will become the main driving force of global sustainable development; and 4) international relations in the field of sustainable development will turn to competitive co-operation.展开更多

In terms of delineating sphere of urban influence, existing studies have been focused on static study by using single year data or single method, resulting in a lack of time-series longitudinal analysis or comprehensive analysis based on multiple methods This study emphasizes on comparing two methods from both the theoretical and empirical perspective. Both gravity model and improwd field model are applied to the selected study area for measurements and comparison, to explore their strengths and weaknesses. A research framework for comprehensive analysis on delineating sphere of urban influence is proposed. In the end, the differences of deli:aeating methods are illustrated and the feasibility of comprehensive analysis is discussed. Recommendations are provided for selecting appropriate methods for delineating sphere of urban influence or developing regional hierarchy system plans and urban spatial structure schemes.展开更多

This paper, with the cooperation on Galileo Program between Europe and China as background, gives an overview of the development of test ranges for satellite navigation, proposes an implementation plan for China Galileo Test Range (CGTR), presents an analysis of CGTR and describes its overall objective, architecture, function and services, as well as operating modes. Particular analysis and study are given to the critical technologies related to CGTR implementation, including test range simulation and evaluation, time syn-chronizing and keeping, and pseudolite time division multiple access (TDMA) signal design. Finally, experimental results show that Chinese charaeter representations can effectively learn the semantic information. Characters with similar semantics cluster together in the visualize space. Moreover, the proposed Chinese word segmentation model also achieves a pretty good improvement on precision, recall and f-measure.展开更多

Based on the time-distance distributions of posterior earthquakes relative to prior ones in the regions of North China, Northwest China, Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) plateau and Southwest China, the optimized and 90%-confidence margin curves are estimated using optimization and statistical analysis methods. This indicates that the concept and method of ETSD with 3-dimension (time-distance-magnitudes) instead of those of “recurrence interval" with 1-dimension (time) or 2-dimension (time-magnitude) provides a new approach to understanding the fluctuation of seismic activities, estimating the effective earthquake-preparation time of potential hypocenters, and therefore improving the medium- and long-term prediction of strong earthquakes.展开更多
