“The Great Classicist Symphonic Movements of Beethoven... Can Be Ideally So Heard as Lasting Just a Moment：” Adorno on Musical Time

In the context of his thoughts on the relationship between music and time in his Musical Writings, Adorno refers often to the above quoted thesis. This paradoxicality, attributed to particular symphonies of Beethoven, tends to become a fixed idea in the context of his thoughts on musical time. Adorno adopts Hegel＇s understanding of time as process of permanent overcoming of instants. He finds an analogy between instant and musical motive, based on the common, in Hegel＇s and Beethoven＇s systems, notion of the working-out of an idea and of a musical structure respectively. He then tries to include in the process of becoming extended and reappearing formal parts, such as themes and expositions. How could he find a convergence between permanent formal growth and persistence of formal parts, which distinguishes a musical work from an improvisation？ In order to transcend this immanent antinomy, he applies Hegelian logical principles.

Examining the relationship between sport and health among USA women:An analysis of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System

Background：Research has been conducted linking sports participation and health in childhood and adolescence;however,little is known about the contribution of sport to women＇s health.The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sport and women＇s health in the USA by analyzing data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System（BRFSS）.Methods：This study was a secondary data analysis of the 2013 national BRFSS survey.Unlike the BRFSS core component from previous years,in2013,participants were questioned extensively about their physical activity behaviors.Seventy-six different activities were identifie by the participants.Two researchers categorized the 76 activities as sport,conditioning exercise,recreation,or household tasks based on previously identifie categories.Logistic regression was utilized to calculate odds ratios and adjusted odds ratios for chronic diseases based on physical activity category.Results：Women who participated in sport had better health outcomes with significant y lower odds for all chronic diseases except asthma and better general health than women who participated in conditioning exercise,household tasks,or recreation,and many of the significan differences remained after controlling for demographic characteristics.Conclusion：Sport participation was associated with more positive health outcomes among women in the USA compared with the other categories.As a means to improve health of women,the USA could focus on efforts to increase sport participation among women.

Exercise is recreation not medicine

Purpose： This paper responds to the question, is exercise medicine？ It does so using a qualitative case study that proposes that exercise is recreation. The study （1） describes and reflects upon an exercise is recreation metaphor, （2） establishes the principles and processes used to develop a sport park within which exercise is recreation, and （3） presents a comparative analysis of the exercise is recreation approach with a UK quality framework for ＂exercise referrals＂. Methods： Four years of documentation were collated and placed into 14 categories： （1） university strategies, （2） plans of the site, （3） policy documents, （4） minutes of a steering group, （5） contemporary documents, （6） organisational charts, （7） responses to local government policies on sport, （8） consultation documents, （9） operational procedures, （10） facility specifications, （11） partnership agreements, （12） material relating to the university＇s work on events, （13） notes on the universities sport department, and （14） timetables. These data were analysed through a 4-stage process which used recreation as the analytical theme for a comparative analysis. Results： The characteristics of the exercise is recreation metaphor in this case are （1） a focus on the experience of the user, （2） the promotion of well-being, （3） the importance of community, （4） embracing inclusivity, （5） sport, （6） aesthetics, and （7） leisure time. The principles and processes used to develop the sport park were （1） custodianship, （2） partnerships, （3） values, （4） inter-professional working, （5） local heritage, （6） change, （7） the natural park environment, and （8） ＂riding the bike as you build it＂. The comparative analysis with a UK quality framework for ＂exercise referrals＂ clearly shows a difference from an exercise is recreation approach. From the 19th-Century Novel to the Portuguese Contemporary Film Adaptation

The literary adaptations of canonical novels for film provide a unique repository of both identity contents and socio-cultural observations which can be revisited through the filmic representations. These recreations symbolize not only a privileged visual interpretation of a nation, but they also allow us to examine how a given society reflects itself through the fiction. In this sense, the objective of this paper is to reflect upon the Portuguese updated filmic adaptation of The Crime of Father Amaro （1880） by the canonical author Eta de Queiroz. On one hand, the author intends to rethink about the Portuguese identity portrayed by the film and, at the same time, the author manages to observe how the Portuguese society is revealed. On the other hand, the paper aims to analyze the particular process of the adaptation of The Crime of Father Amaro following a qualitative methodology

Stress hormonal analysis in elite soccer players during a season

Purpose： The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in some hormonal parameters （cortisol, testosterone, ratio of testosterone/cortisol （T/C）） in professional soccer players during a season. Methods： Fifteen professional players from a soccer club of the first division of the Greek soccer league participated. All sport medical examinations were conducted four times： before the re-building period, post re-building period, mid-season, and after finishing the competition phase. Results： For testosterone, significant differences were observed between the end season and post re-building period （11.6%; p 〈 0.05） and mid-season （ 12.1%; p 〈 0.05）. The cortisol concentration increased at mid-season by approximately 23%, and this change differed significantly from all other measurements for this hormone. The T/C ratio increased at the post re-building period and decreased at the middle of the season. Conclusion： These hormones and their ratios could be used as stress and recovery state indicators. Coaches can use these parameters in combination with other indicators to optimize workloads, and to avoid overreaching and overtraining.

John Milton＇s Ongoing Project of Protestant Enlightenment in Paradise Lost

For some critics, the publication of Milton＇s Paradise Lost in 1667 suggests his taking religious retreat from his previous political investment in both the Commonwealth Government （1649-1653） and Oliver Cromwell＇s Protectorate that was abnegated by the return of King Charles II in 1660. Not to mention that Milton＇s flamboyant portrayal of Satan appears to be a critique of republicanism： Just as the republicans who revolted against the monarchy, Satan tempts other angels to rebel against the omnipotent God and gain their freedom. This transgressive betrayal fails and is punished in Paradise Lost. However, when the strict censorship of the writings of Milton＇s contemporaries is taken into account, the strategies employed in Milton＇s Paradise Lost become clearer： It may be read as a veiled critique of kingship hiding behind the facade of a criticism of republicanism so as to circumvent censorship. In other words, the work may have surreptitiously conveyed a hidden message for his English citizens. That message may be indirectly delivered through Milton＇s innovative elaboration of the fall of Man, which is roughly described in the Genesis. Therefore, this essay argues that Milton veils the seed of political reform in the moral lessons conveyed in his presentation of the psychological dynamic of Adam and Eve＇s fall. In addition, this essay further explores how Milton endeavors to re-shape the national consciousness of the 17th century English people through alternate historical awareness.

A Prospective, Randomized Trial to Evaluate the Efficacy of Virtual Reality Treatment Versus Traditional Balance Treatment in Patients with Stroke

Recovery from stroke needs different time and speed in every case depending on the brain capacity of neural plasticity. Based on neurophysiological researches high repetition of practice is required to induce neuroplastic changes and functional recovery of motor deficits. However, data from earlier studies shows that stroke patients generally perform a very limited number of movement repetitions in traditional therapy sessions. Virtual Reality therapy was found to be beneficial in improving trunk, hand, upper and lower extremity functions. However, reviews found no definitive conclusions regarding balance. The present study focuses on evaluating the efficacy of Nintendo WiiTM on balance and gait functions of stroke patients. Twenty one hemiparetic stroke patients were randomly assigned to either control or therapy groups. Effectiveness was evaluated by Fugl-Meyer balance subtest, Functional Ambulation Categories （FAC）, Romberg （R）, sharpened Romberg （SR）, one-legged stance （OLS）, six-meter walking test （6MWT） and timed up and go test （TUG）. The analysis revealed a significant effect of training with Nintendo Wii M for FAC z = 0.0267, FMBS z = 0.0046, OLST2 z = 0.0068 and OLS1 z = 0.0067 （affected side）. The control group demonstrated improvement in R （z = 0.0474） and SR （z = 0.0411）. In both groups improvement was detected in functional mobility and 6MWT （control group z = 0.0069, Wii groupz = 0.0123）. No significant differences were found between groups. Findings of the current study support that balance treatment with Nintendo WiiTM is similarly effective method to improve static balance and functional mobility when compared with conventional therapy.

On the national culture used in the art of animation

Aging With Disney and the Gendering of Evil

Walt Disney animated films are considered synonymous with wholesome family entertainment despite the inherent negative messages of gender, age, and power hierarchies behind them. This paper proposes to explore the aspect of age as intersecting with gender through the villainesses in six of Disney＇s popular animated films： Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs （1937）, Cinderella （1950）, Sleeping Beauty （1959）, The Little Mermaid （1989）, Tangled （2010）, and Frozen （2013）. How Disney alters the actions of major and minor characters, and the construction of aging female characters and the key characteristics they exhibit during their fight for eternal youth, beauty, and social and political power will be analyzed, attempting to show how Disney is not a harmless substitute for a babysitter for children.

Clinical observation of cerebral palsy treated with Chinese massage for promoting the Governor Vessel, benefiting the kidney and strengthening the spleen combined with music therapy

Objective To observe the effects on the range of motion （ROM） of ankle joint and muscular spasm of the lower limbs treated with Chinese massage for promoting the Governor Vessel, benefiting the kidney and strengthening the spleen combined with music therapy in infantile cerebral palsy （CP）. Methods In 286 cases of spasmodic CP, 7 kinds of Chinese massage were adopted, named massage on acupoints to promote circulation of the Governor Vessel, massage for strengthening the spleen and benefiting qi, spine-pinching therapy, segmental massage, foot massage, massage for promoting the recovery of muscle strength and massage for promoting ROM of joints. Chinese massage was applied in musical background. Buddha music and five-element music of Chinese medicine （music of the Heart, Liver and Kidney Meridians） were optioned. The treatment was given once or twice a day and 30 days made one course. The angles of femoral adductor and dorsal flexion of foot as well as the score of composite spasticity scale （CSS） were observed before and after treatment so that the therapeutic effect was assessed. Results In 30 days of treatment, 106 cases （37. 1%） were effective markedly, 172 cases （60. 1%） effective and 8 cases （2.8%） failed. The angle of dorsal flexion of foot was （105.64± 12.66）° and （76.58± 9.89）° before and after treatment respectively; the angle of femoral adductor was （119.89±25.47）° and （158.99± 18.66）° before and after treatment respectively; the score of CSS was （12.39±2.56） and （7. 069 ± 2.97） before and after treatment respectivel, there was significant difference before and after treatment （all P〈0.01）. Conclusion Chinese massage for promoting the Governor Vessel, benefiting the kidney and strengthening the spleen combined with music therapy brings the extremely active effect into play on the recovery of sitting, kneeling, standing and walking for children with CP.

Contribution of Fluid Dynamics to Woodwind Instruments Investigations of Timbre and Pitch of Bassoon Bocals

The discussed topic of isolating certain parameters which describe the timbre in connection with bocals of bassoons is of major interest for manufacturers and artist likewise since a reduction in the overall shear stress of these kinds of technical diffusors is very helpful but not sufficient. The timbre seen from the side of the musician has to be the same. Up to now two criteria have been isolated which have a deep influence on the easier blowing of the bassoon and on the comparable timbre due to geometrical reasons. If the geometrical outer contour is designed carefully, it is possible to modify the shape and preserve the timbre.

Study on Burning Temperature Versus Time Graph of Moxa Sticks in a Novel Animal Moxibustion Device

Objective: To invent a novel animal experimentation moxa device and intend to solve temperature fluctuations during moxa stick burning in animal moxibustion test. Methods: Smokeless moxa sticks of 4 mm in diameter and 120 mm in length were selected in this trial. The target temperature was(47±1) ℃. The burning temperature versus time graph of moxa sticks during un-interfered time period were recorded when the distances between moxa sticks and thermometer were 2 mm, 3 mm and 4 mm respectively. In addition, the total lengths of burned moxa stick ashes within 0-5 min were recorded. Then the moxa stick burning temperature versus time graph after intervention was measured. Results: The maximum temperatures during test duration when the distances were 2 mm, 3 mm and 4 mm were(47.37±0.25) ℃,(42.62±2.05) ℃ and(35.50±0.40) ℃respectively the total lengths of burned ashes from 0-5 min were(5.1±0.08) mm,(12.17±0.44) mm,(14.8±0.31) mm,(17.25±0.17) mm and(19.82±0.67) mm respectively with a distance of 2 mm between a moxa stick and the testing area, remove 5 mm ashes every 2 min, then the maximum and minimum temperatures within 10 min were(48.37±0.47) ℃and(47.12±0.25) ℃, showing no statistical significance(P=0.12). Conclusion: The novel animal experimentation moxa device can help to maintain relatively constant moxa stick burning temperature during test period.
