Then animals weresacrificed under ether anesthesia, intracardiac blood andliver tissues were obtained. Measurements were performedboth in serum and in homogenized liver tissues.Malondialdehyde (MDA) level was measured by TBARSmethod. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxidedismutase (SOD) levels were studied by commercial kits.Kruskal-Wallis test was used for statistical analysis.RESULTS: ALT and AST in Group 1 (154 U/Land 302 U/L,respectively) were higher than those in Group 2 (94 U/L and155 U/L) and Group 3 (99 U/L and 168 U/L) (P=0.001 forboth). Serum and tissue levels of MDA in Group 1 (1.84 nmol/mL and 96 nmol/100 mg-protein) were higher than Group 2(0.91 nmol/mL and 64 nmol/100 mg-protein) and Group 3(0.94 nmol/mL and 49 nmol/100 mg-protein) (P<0.001 forboth). On the other hand, serum GSH-Px level in Group 1(8.21 U/g-Hb) was lower than Group 2 (16 U/g-Hb) andGroup 3 (16 U/g-Hb) (P<0.001). Serum and liver tissue levelsof SOD in Group 1 (11 U/mL and 26 U/100 mg-protein)were lower than Group 2 (18 U/mL and 60 U/100 mg-protein)and Group 3 (20 U/mL and 60 U/100 mg-protein) (P<0.001for both).CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that ethanol-induced liver damage is associated with oxidative stress, and co-administration of n-acetylcysteine attenuates thisdamage effectively in rat model.展开更多

The effects of catalyst concentration, reaction temperature, charging rate and EO/PO mixture ratio on the polymerization reaction were investigated. It was revealed that the optimal reaction condition is the ratio of 2.5∶1 000(KOH mass vs. product mass), at 114.6℃ and pressure below 0.4 MPa. The residual KOH was neutralized by phosphoric acid(H 3PO 4). Then the crude copolyether was refined with adsorbents, and the refined copolyether, which contains less than 0.7 μg/ml K+, was obtained as colorless, viscous liquid.展开更多

Mill.). Plant material has been harvested in July from Romanian Carpathian Mountains. The ethanolic extract (70%, v/v) was prepared from the aerial part of rock rose species. High performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) analysis of ethanol extract and subsequently hydrolysed sample indicated that quercetin glycosides were the major polyphenolic compounds, and kaempferol derivates, chlorogenic and gallic phenylcarboxylic acids are also being present in the polar extracts. Chemiluminescence assay in luminol/H:O2 system indicated very high antioxidant activity of the ethanolic type of extract (ICs0 = 1.27 ~tg/mL), while microbiological studies (cylinder method in plates) indicated certain antimicrobial activity (measuring from 12.5 mm to 21.5 mm of the diameter of the inhibition zone) of the propylene glycol (20%, v/v) standardized extract (5 mg gallic acid equivalents/mL sample) against several standard bacterial strains, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 and Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14028 and Salmonella enterritidis ATCC 13076, respectively. Therefore, based on the augmented antioxidant effect of the rock rose polar extracts, there can be found numerous applications in the pharmaceutical industry, but also in non-pharmaceutical fields, for example in cosmetic and hygiene products areas, due to certain antimicrobial properties.展开更多

This is done by analysis of the process through modelling and simulation. In literature, reported PCC models with a mixture of IL and MEA solvent were developed using equilibrium-based mass transfer approach. In contrast, the model in this study is developed using rate-based mass transfer approach in Aspen Plus. From the results, the mixed aqueous solvent with 5-30 wt% IL and 30 wt% MEA showed 7%-9% and 12%-27% less specific regeneration energy and solvent circulation rate respectively compared to commonly used 30 wt% MEA solvent. It is concluded that the |L concentration (wt%) in the solvent blend have significant impact on specific regeneration energy and solvent circulation rate. This study is a starting point for further research on technical and economic analysis of PCC process with aqueous blend of IL and MEA as solvent.展开更多

The dorsal-thoracic region of mice were shaved and exposed to UVB radiation for 24 h for two consecutive weeks. Five groups of ten mice each were conducted: non-irradiated control and irradiated control. Mice treated with commercial cream (S.M.) at a dose of 0.1 mg/cm2 and mice treated with ethanol extract of mixed spirogyra and ulothrix at a dose of 0.1 mg/cm2 or 0.2 mg/cm2. Topical application was performed to all treated mice groups once a day for four consecutive weeks. Results showed significant differences between treated and control groups during the whole period of experiment. The clear potentiality of the ethanol extract was detected through body and skin weight, level of total protein, Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and Catalase (CAT) activities in skin. However, UVB irradiated mice treated with 0.2 mg/cm2 exhibited the most significant effect when compared to control groups. That may be attributed to anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects of algal extract.展开更多

Bottle gourd is a commonly fruit but there are little reports about its biological activities. The aim of the present study was to evaluate antioxidant activity and anti-hyperglycemic potential of ethanolic extract of bottle gourd. The ethanolic extract was tested for its antioxidant activity on chelating power, the ferric reducing/antioxidant power assay (FRAP) and the 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. The results showed that chelating activity was 80.02%, FRAP value was 92.84 μmol Fe^2+/g and active radical scavenging which showed an IC50 was 49.50 μg/ml. The five different doses of ethanolic extract were treated by oral tolerance to mice body before oral glucose tolerance and blood glucose level was measured using glucose oxidase method. The result indicated that inhibition percentage of ethanolic extract of bottle gourd at the dose of 400 mg/kg in glucose-induced hyperglycemic mice was effectively similar to standard drug glibenclamide. The results obtained indicate that ethanolic extract from bottle gourd is the potential antioxidant and anti-hyperglycemic agent.展开更多

Extensive evidence suggests that C-phycocyanin(C-PC), a chromophore phycocyanobilin derived from Spirulina platensis, exerts protective eff ects against chemical-induced organ damage. In this study, we investigated whether C-PC could protect against ethanol-induced acute liver injury. Serum alanine aminotransferase(ALT), aspartate aminotransferase(AST), triglyceride(TG), total cholesterol(CHOL), low-density lipoprotein(LDL), liver homogenate malondialdehyde(MDA), superoxide dismutase(SOD) content were measured, and pathological examination of liver sections were examined. C-PC showed obvious inhibitory eff ects on serum ALT, AST, TG, CHOL, LDL and MDA, and SOD content significantly increased in the liver. The structure of hepatic lobules was clear, liver sinus returned to normal, and liver cell cords were arranged in neat rows. Cloudiness, swelling, inflammatory cell infiltration and spotty necrosis of liver cells were significantly reduced. Therefore, C-PC can significantly protect against ethanol-induced acute liver injury.展开更多

They can produce high value biodiesel, bioethanol, bio-hydrogen, biogas, and that they are able to use waste water and nutrients, allowing for integration of such processes with waste treatment. Open ponds in hectares of area, could remove excess CO2 in atmosphere with photosynthesis. Large scale microalgal production in fields which are not suitable for agriculture could be a solution for CO: capturing from the atmosphere. Sea water could be used for the culture medium not to consume the fresh water. However microalgae reduce the atmospheric CO: while producing the organic material, using the biomass for either fuel production or food, feed, fertilizer, come out with CO2 release to the atmosphere, when burned by the engine, body and/or bacterial activities. So, microalgal growth can't reduce the CO2 however makes an important contribution to keep the atmospheric CO2 level stable. Long term solution for removing the CO2, could be possible with making durable biomaterials with microalgal biomass and capture the atmospheric CO2 by fixing into the materials and interrupt the carbon cycle for a long while.展开更多

In this study, a carbon dot(CD)PDT agent recently developed by our group was firstly applied as reducing agent to react with potassium permanganate for fabricating CDs/manganese dioxide(CDs/MnO2) composites, which were in turn modified with polyethylene glycol(PEG) to form water-soluble CDs/MnO2-PEG nanohybrids. In a normal physiological environment, the as-prepared nanohybrids exhibited quenched fluorescence, weak singlet oxygen generation, and low magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) signal. However, given the high sensitivity of MnO2 to the TME, the CDs/MnO2-PEG nanohybrids changed from an "off" to an"on" state with synchronously enhanced fluorescence, singlet oxygen generation, and MRI signal in the TME. In vitro and in vivo analyses have revealed that CDs/MnO2-PEG nanohybrids could be applied as TME-driven, turn-on nanotheranostics for the MR/fluorescence bimodal imaging-guided PDT of cancer. Moreover, complete clearance of CDs/MnO2-PEG nanohybrids from the body of mice was observed, indicating their low long-term toxicity and good biocompatibility. This work offers a new nanotheranostic candidate for modulating the unfavorable TME, particularly for the targeted PDT of cancer through precise positioning and oxygen generation.展开更多
