The researchers seek to uncover: (1) the generic structure of MA theses, (2) the generic structure of Ph.D. dissertations, (3) any probable differences between these two groups. "statement of the problem" section of 48 MA and Ph.D. dissertations from 2001 to 2008 in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) at Mazandaran, Tehran and Allame Tabatabaee universities was selected. For the quantitative method of data analysis, frequency counts, and for the qualitative method, genre analysis was used. Samples were categorized both according to the year they were written and the university they belonged to. The study enjoyed a second rater with inter-rater reliability about 0.93. Results revealed that there was a significant difference in writing "statement of the problem" in different time periods and different universities in the sense that students in different degrees, time periods, and universities employed quite different generic structures for writing. However, postgraduates in recent years (especially 2005-2008); regardless of their degree and university, seem to use much more similar generic structures which indicates a general genre awareness.展开更多

The author also discusses a proper approach for teaching medical postgraduate students, which is centered on students and based on research. This approach for teaching and leaning has been proved effective and students have improved in their socio-linguistic and pragmatic competences. This approach should have implications to EFL teachers who teach students of other specialties.展开更多

In other words, we try to help Korean and Myanmar learners to study personal pronouns by comparing the personal pronouns between the two languages. Personal pronouns are used in Myanmar as “pronouns referring to people” as in Korean. The two languages are divided into first person, second person, and third person pronoun. However, looking at functions and usage, there seem to be many differences between the two languages. For example, in the case of Myanmar language, personal pronouns are different according to gender and personal pronouns are used differently for general people and monks. Myanmar also uses the personal pronouns differently depending on colloquial and written language. In the case of Korean language, there is no big difference between the sexes in different languages but there is difference between the people and monks in terms of Myanmar language. However, Korean people have difficulties in learning personal pronouns because their usage differs according to their status and social status. Therefore, in order to solve this problem, it is meaningful to identify commonalities and differences between languages by comparing characteristics and use of personal pronouns between the two languages.展开更多

In this article, immigrants to New York from three countries are examined. The third wave of immigrants has brought a lot of changes. The newly arrived immigrants employ different patterns of assimilation while assimilating into American society. This is due to the fact that the problems they face are different from those of old immigrants.展开更多

In this paper an attempt is made to evolve a Remedial Grammar (RG) which enables the teacher to develop a repertoire of remedial activities based on the errors identified following Error Analysis (EA) for repeated presentation. The error types are considered as teaching/learning points. The present paper argues that CALL is the right model for effective remedial learning. Remedial Gmaster (RGm), an authoring package is introduced. This is an exclusive mode of error correction in which interlingual, intralingual, developmental, and global errors are dealt with. The syntactical problems due to the subtle difference between simple past and perfect tenses in English language use are discussed and CALL authoring package presented.展开更多

From activity theory point of view, meaningful learning is an active, conscious, constructive, and socially medicated practice that includes reciprocal intention-action-reflection activities. This paper aims to try to give a MOOC learning activity design model in grammar teaching which tries to offer a reference for the MOOC teaching in grammar lesson.展开更多
