Regulative Effects of Auricular Acupuncture,Moxibustion and Chinese Herbs on Immunologic Function in the D-Galactose-induced Aging Mouse

Objective:To observe the regulative effect of auricular acupuncture, moxibustion and Chinese herbs on immunologic function in the D-galactose-induced aging mouse and to probe the feasibility and possible mechanisms for delaying aging, so as to provide experimental basis for acupuncture, moxibustion and Chinese herbs for delaying aging. Methods: Aging mouse model was established by subcutaneous injection of D-galactose, and treated by auricular acupuncture, auricular acupuncture plus moxibustion, and auricular acupuncture plus Chinese herbs respectively for 6 weeks and then serum interleukin-2 (IL-2) and IL-6 contents and splenic lymphocyte transformation rate were compared among the groups. Results: Compared with the young group, the serum IL-2 level and the splenic lymphocyte transformation rate significantly decreased and the IL-6 level significantly increased in the aging mouse. After treatment by auricular acupuncture, auricular acupuncture plus Chinese herbs, especially auricular acupuncture plus moxibustion, the serum IL-2 level and the splenic lymphocyte transformation rate significantly increased, and the IL-6 level significantly decreased as compared with the model group. Conclusions: Combined application of auricular acupuncture, moxibustion and Chinese herbs can improve the decline or dysfunction of immunological function in the aging organism to a certain extent.

OBSERVATION ON THE THERAPEUTIC EFFECT OF ACUPUNCTURE COMBINED WITH TDP IRRADIATION AND MASSAGE FOR 600 CASES OF MASTITIS

In the present paper, the authors report their results about clinical treatment of 600 cases of mastitis with acupuncture plus TDP irradiation. Main points Tanzhong (CV 17), Quchi (LI 11) and Jiaji (EX-B 2) were punctured, supplemented with other acupoints according to the concrete symptoms and signs and TDP irradiation for 30 min. For example, in the treatment of mastitis patients with high fever, bilateral Hegu (LI 4) and Taichong (LR 3) were punctured in combination with pricking blood and cupping methods. After 1-10 sessions of treatment (once daily), all the 600 cases were effective, with 510 cases (85%) being cured, 83 cases (13.8%) remarkably effective, and with 7 cases (1.2%) effective.

CLINICAL OBSERVATION ON THE ACUPOINT INTRADERMAL EMBEDDING OF RINGHEADED THUMBTACK-NEEDLE THERAPY FOR HYPERPLASIA OF MAMMARY GLANDS

In the present paper, the author used acupoint intradermal embedding of ringheaded thumbtack-needle therapy combined with herbal medicine therapy to treat 110 cases of hyperplasia of mammary glands, and compared its therapeutic effect with that of herbal therapy alone. The observed indexes of the treatment were pain relief degree, the size of hyperplasic glands and the time of occurrence of marked effect. Following 3 courses of treatment,the results showed the therapeutic effect of the ringheaded thumbtack-needle needle plus herbal medicine therapy was superior to that of herbal medicine therapy alone in the above-mentioned 3 indexes (P ＜ 0.01 ).

COMMENTS ON CLINICAL APPLICATION OF LOCAL MULTI-NEEDLE PUNCTURING

In the present paper, combining a few of typical cases, the author introduces his clinical experiences about the application of multiple acupuncture needles inserted into a certain local region for treatment of facial spasm, lumbago, hyperplasis of the mammary glands and herpes zoster and gives some brief comments.

300 CASES OF HYPERPLASIA OF MAMMARY GLANDS TREATED WITH RED-HOT NEEDLE PLUS FILIFORM NEEDLE

Clinical observations on 300 cases of hyperplasia of mammary glands (group A) treated by red hot needle plus filiform needle are reported in the present study. "Ashi" points were used as the main acupoints. For comparison, other 300 cases (group B) were treated with routine acupuncture method, and Rugen (ST 18) was used as the main acupoint. In addition, other auxiliary acupoints were supplemented in the light of the concrete syndromes in these two groups. The treatment was given once daily, with 10 sessions being a therapeutic course. Of the 300 cases in group A, 240 were clinically cured, amounting to 80%; 58 were effective, amounting to 19.3%; 2 were failed, with a total effective rate of 99.3%. Of the 300 cases in group B, 113 were clinically cured, 165 effective, 22 were failed, with a total effective rate of 92.7%. The therapeutic effect of group A is significantly superior to that of group B (P<0.05).

ACUPUNCTURE FOR TRERTING 120 CASES OF HYPERPLASIA OF MAMMARY GLANDS

Objective: To observe the therapeutic effect of acupuncture therapy for 120 cases of hyperplasia of mammary glands. Methods: These patients were classified into liver-qi-stagnation type (n=53), phlegm-coagulation type (n=30) and Thoroughfare-Conception vessel maladjustment type (n=37). Acupoints used were Qimen (期门 LR 14), Wuyi (屋翳 ST 15), Weishu (胃俞 BL 21), etc.. Acupuncture treatment was conducted once daily and 30 treatments constituted one therapeutic course. Results: After 3 courses of treatment, of the 53, 30 and 37 cases of the liver-qi-stagnation, phlegm-coagulation and Thoroughfare-Conception vessel maladjustment types, 43 (81.1%), 24 (80.0%) and 29 (78.4%) were cured, 7 (13.2%), 5 (16.7%)and 5 (13.5%) markedly improved, 3 (5.7%), 1 (3.3%) and 2 (5.4%) improved respectively, and 1 (2.7%) of Thoroughfare-Conception vessel maladjustment type failed. A two-years’ follow-up showed that 3 of the cured 92 cases had a relapse, and after 2 more courses of treatment, they were cured again. Conclusion: Acupuncture therapy is effective for the treatment of hyperplasia of mammary glands.

Clinical progress on moxibustion in preventing and treating adverse effects of surgery or chemoradiotherapy for breast cancer

Breast cancer has the highest incidence rate among all women＇s malignant tumors worldwide.Surgery,radiotherapy and chemotherapy are three major treatments,while most patients showed adverse effects or complications during or after the treatment,including lymphedema,gastrointestinal reactions and leukopenia,which cause severe impact on patients＇ recovery and quality of life.Moxibustion has been used and certified to alleviate adverse effects of surgery or chemoradiotherapy for breast cancer.We have summarized literatures in recent years and suggest more systematic research in the future for the underlying mechanism.

Surrounding electroacupuncture needling for breast mass after acute mastitis

Objective： To observe the clinical efficacy of surrounding electroacupuncture needling for breast mass after acute mastitis.Methods： Thirty patients with breast mass after acute mastitis who conformed to the inclusion criteria were given surrounding electroacupuncture needling. Acupoint selection： 4-8 needles were needled around the mass and at Zusanli（足三里ST 36）,Sanyinjiao（三阴交SP 6）,Fengl6 ng（丰隆 ST 40） and Rugen（乳根 ST 18）. Electroacupuncture was performed at ST 36, SP 6 and ST 40. The above treatment was once a day. Treatment for 7 times was considered as 1 course of treatment, and 3 weeks were free from treatment between courses. Color ultrasound in breast was used to examine the breast mass before the next course of treatment, treatment can be terminated if the mass disappeared, otherwise, treatment should be continued. Three courses at most were needed.Results： After 1-3 courses of treatment, 16 patients were cured, accounting for 53.3%（16/30）; markedly effective： 8 cases, accounting for 26.7%（8/30）; effective： 4 cases, accounting for 13.3%（4/30）; ineffective：2 cases, accounting for 6.7%（2/30）.Conclusion： Surrounding electroacupuncture needling for breast mass after acute mastitis was effective clinically.

Study on Clinical Efficacy of Needling Danzhong(CV 17) in Treating Postpartum Hypogalactia

Objective： To investigate the clinical efficacy of needling Danzhong（CV 17） in the treatment of postpartum hypogalactia and provide clinical evidence for indications of the point. Methods： A multi-centre single-blind randomized controlled trial was carried out. Two hundred and seventy-six puerperal women with postpartum hypogalactia were randomly allocated into acupuncture group and herb group, and respectively treated for three consecutive days. The degree of mammary fullness, the amount of milk secreted, prolacfin, baby weight, the frequency and volume of artificial feeding, the number of infant urination events, and the duration of baby crying were observed. The clinical curative effects on postpartum hypogalactia were compared. Results： Hypogalactia was effectively treated in both acupuncture and herb groups. There were statistically significant differences in degree of mammary fullness, amount of milk secreted, baby weight, the frequency and amount of artificial feeding, and the number of infant urination events between pretreatment and post-treatment, but no difference between the two groups. There was no significant difference in prolactin in the acupuncture group and there was a difference in prolactin in the herb group between pretreatment and posttreatment. Conclusion： Needling Danzhong（CV 17） can effectively promote lactation.

Observation on Efficacy of Acupuncture for Hyperplasia of Mammary Glands

Objective： To observe the effect of acupuncture on hyperplasia of mammary glands. Methods： Sixty patients with hyperplasia of mammary glands were randomly divided into 2 groups, the treatment group and the control group, 30 cases in each group. The patients in the treatment group were treated by acupuncture combined with electromagnetic therapy, while the patients in the control group were treated by Tamoxifen. After treatment, the serum estradiol （E2） and progesterone （P） levels were detected during luteal phase. Results： The total effective rate of the treatment group was 90.3%, while it was 93.3% in the control group, there was no statistical difference （P〉0.05）. The E2 levels decreased, and the P levels increased in the two groups. After treatment, the E2 and P levels were significantly different from those before in the two groups （P 〈 0.05）. And there was no statistical difference of the E2 and P levels between the two groups both before and after the treatments. Conclusion： Acupuncture combined with electromagnetic therapy can regulate the hypothalamic- pituitary-ovarian axis＇ function, and can repair normal process from hyperplasia to involution of the mammary glands. According to our study, the effect of acupuncture combine with electromagnetic therapy was almost the same with the western medicine.

Treatment of 62 Patients with Postpartum Lactation Disorder by Acupuncture

Sixty two patients with postpartum lactation disorder were treated by needling Neiguan （PC 6）, Zusanli（ST 36）, Rugen（ST 18） and Jianzhen（SI 9）, and moxibustion at Danzhong（CV 17）. After 7 treatments, 30 puerperae were vigorous and could lactate 400 mL every day, 26 puerperae could lactate 250 mL every day, and need other milk to feed the children, and 6 puerperae had no improvement in lactation, and lactate a little as pressing the breasts.

Observation on lower-reinforcing and upper- reducing acupuncture method for hyperplasia of mammary gland and its influence on estradiol and progesterone

Objective： To observe the clinical effect of lower-reinforcing and upper-reducing acupuncture method for hyperplasia of mammary gland （HMG） and its influence on estradiol （E2） and progesterone （P）. Methods： A randomized, single-blinded and controlled trial was conducted. A total of 124 cases conforming to the inclusion criteria were randomized by random number table into a treatment group and a control group, with 62 cases in each group. Patients in both groups received acupuncture therapy at the same acupoints, while patients in the treatment group received lower-reinforcing and upper-reducing method, and patients in the control group received even reinforcing-reducing manipulation. The treatment started around 10 d before menstruation and was conducted every other day. Patients received 5 treatments in each menstruation cycle for consecutive 3 cycles. The levels of E2, P and E2/P and clinical efficacy were measured before and after treatment. Results： After treatment, the breast lump size, pain intensity and concomitant symptoms score in both groups were substantially lower than those before treatment, showing statistical significances （all P〈0.01）, and the improvement in the treatment group was higher than that in the control group, and the between-group comparisons showed statistical significances （all P〈0.01）. After treatment, the overall effective rate was 91.9% in the treatment group, higher than 72.6% in the control group, and the between-group comparison showed a statistical significance （P〈0.01）. After treatment, levels of E2, P and E2/P value showed no statistical significance when compared with those before treatment in the two groups （all P〉0.05）. Conclusion： Lower-reinforcing and upper-reducing acupuncture method can effectively alleviate clinical symptoms and signs in HMG patients, and produce a better effect than even reinforcing-reducing manipulation. The majority of HMG patients＇ E2, P level and E2/P value were not beyond the normal ranges; therefore, acupuncture showed no substantial influence on E2 and P levels and E2/P value.
