In a previous greenhouse experiment, we showed that there was an interaction between Cu and Zn, which affected growth and metal uptake by young barley plants grown on soil to which Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn had been added. We suggested that the underlying mechanism was the control of the amount of plant-available Zn by competitive adsorption between Cu and Zn. In order to test this hypothesis, the adsorption of Zn alone, and in the presence of added Cd, Cu and Pb, has been measured using the same soil. Following adsorption, the extractability of the Zn in CaCl2 solution was measured. The adsorption isotherms showed that of the added metals only Cu had a large effect on Zn adsorption. The effect of Cu was to reduce Zn adsorption and to increase the amount of CaCl2-extractable (i.e. plant-available) Zn, in agreement with the conclusions from the greenhouse experiment. The magnitude of the effect of Cu on plant-available Zn was similar in both experiments. 展开更多

Over the last decade, the standard of care for the treat- ment of chronic hepatitis C has been the combination of pegylated-interferon-alfa (PEG-IFN) and ribavirin (RBV) which results in sustained virological resp... Over the last decade, the standard of care for the treat- ment of chronic hepatitis C has been the combination of pegylated-interferon-alfa (PEG-IFN) and ribavirin (RBV) which results in sustained virological response (SVR) rates of 75%-85% in patients with genotypes 2 or 3 but only of 40%-50% in patients with genotype 1. Cur- rently, there are rapid and continuous developments of numerous new agents against hepatitis C virus (HCV), which are the focus of this review. Boceprevir and tela- previr, two first-generation NS3/4A HCV protease inhibi- tors, have been recently licensed in several countries around the world to be used in combination with PEG- IFN and RBV for the treatment of genotype 1 patients. Boceprevir or telaprevir based triple regimens, com- pared with the PEG-IFN/RBV combination, improve the SVR rates by 25%-31% in treatment-naTve genotype 1 patients, by 40%-64% in prior relapsers, by 33%-45% in prior partial responders and by 24%-28% in prior null responders. At the same time, the application of response-guided treatment algorithms according to the on-treatment virological response results in shortening of the total therapy duration to only 24 wk in 45%-55% of treatment-na'ive patients. There are, however, several challenges with the use of the new triple combinations in genotype 1 patients, such as the need for immediate results of HCV RNA testing using sensitive quantitative assays, new and more frequent adverse events (anemia and dysgeusia for boceprevir; pruritus, rash and anemia for telaprevir), new drug interactions and increasing dif- ficulties in compliance. Moreover, the SVR rates are still poor in very difficult to treat subgroups of genotype 1 patients, such as null responders with cirrhosis, while there is no benefit for patients who cannot tolerate PEG- IFN/RBV or who are infected with non-1 HCV genotype. Many newer anti-HCV agents of different classes and numerous combinations are currently under evaluation with encouraging results. Preliminary data suggest that the treatment of chronic HCV patients with well toler- ated combinations of oral agents without PEG-IFN is feasible and may lead to a universal HCV cure over the next 5-10 years. 展开更多

The objectives of this research were to understand pattern of temporal (year to year) stability in oil palm genotypes and then identify weather variable(s) associated with temporal stability. Stability analysis was performed using the GGE biplot method. The best genotype in one year was not same always in the other year due to changes in the weather conditions over the years. Test environment evaluation revealed that the year 2000 (Y00) was the best representative of the overall environments and most powerful to discriminate genotypes with superior mean yield and temporal stability. The relationship of the climatic factors on the basis of their joint contribution to the development of specific trait varied from the pattern observed when their roles on the same traits were individually assessed. Maximum relative humidity, sunshine and rainfall could help explain the yield fluctuation due to their contribution to the overall yield variation. However, genotypes GI0 and G2 which exhibited high mean performance and stability for BN would be beneficial to the oil palm growers in ensuring steady cash flow from regular bunch yield production. 展开更多

Research on the social value of the bus industry in Australia revealed an inconsistency in findings between qualitative and quantitative results in relation to the nature of a bus operator's interaction with the community where they provide a transport service. As part of a larger research project that surveyed bus operators about their corporate social responsibility, bivariate analysis found that the responses to the embedded Sense of Community Index (SOCI) did not provide a predictor of the extent of a bus operator's community interaction or determinant of Corporate Responsibility (CR). However, qualitative comments in the survey suggested that bus operators did display strong positive feelings about their community. Published after the data collection stage was completed, the Sense of Community Responsibility Index (SOCRI) appeared to be a better fit than SOCI to explain the nature of bus operator's interaction with their community. Rather than drawing on community resources, the interaction was shown to be one of leaderships on the part of the operator. Further examination of this relationship using the SOCR would test this finding. 展开更多

The objective of the study was to evaluate the drug-drug interaction studies of levoceterizine with atenolol. Calibration curve studies of working standard solutions of levocetirizine and atenolol (0.01-0.1 mmol) were scanned. Maxima appeared at 231 nm for levocetirizine and 224 nm for atenolol. The calibration curve obeyed Beer Lambert's Law. Lone availabilities of both the drugs were studied in pH 1, pH 4, pH 7.4 and pH 9 at 37℃ on B.P. (British Pharmacopoeia) dissolution apparatus. To study the drug-drug interaction of levocetirizine (5 mg tablet) and atenolol (100 mg tablet), both the drugs were introduced to the dissolution apparatus in simulated gastric juice (pH 1), pH 4, pH 7.4 and pH 9 at 37℃ at zero time and measured the absorbance maxima of both the drugs at the corresponding wavelength. Graphs were plotted for availability percentage (%) of drug versus time at each set of experiment. The availability percentage (%) of levocetirizine in the buffers of pH simulated to gastric pH 4, pH 7.4 and pH 9 in the presence of atenolol was 436.78%, 376.90%, 436.78% and 436.78%, respectively, but the availability of atenolol was increased up to 214.80%, 212.96%, 214.93% and 231.51% in simulated to gastric pH and in the buffers ofpH 4, pH 7.4 and pH 9, respectively. On the basis of these studies, it is concluded that levocetirizine forms a charge-complex with atenolol; therefore, co-administration of these drugs should be avoided. 展开更多

The study of animal personality has attracted considerable attention, as it has revealed a number of similarities in personality between humans and several nonhuman species. At the same time the adaptive value and evolutionary maintenance of different personalities are the subject of debate. Since Pavlov's work on dogs, students of comparative cognition have been aware that animals display vast individual differences on cognitive tasks, and that these differences may not be entirely accounted for differences in cognitive abilities. Here, we argue that personality is an important source of variation that may affect cognitive performance and we hypothesise mutual influences between personality and cognition across an individual's lifespan. In particular, we suggest that: 1) personality profiles may be markers of different cognitive styles; 2) success or failure in cognitive tasks could affect different personalities differently; 3) ontogenetic changes of personality profiles could be reflected in changes in cognitive performance. One of the most important questions in the science of global change is how to balance the atmospheric CO2 budget. There is a large terrestrial missing carbon sink amounting to about one billion tonnes of carbon per annum. The locations, magnitudes, variations, and mechanisms responsible for this terrestrial missing carbon sink are uncertain and the focus of much continuing debate. Although the positive feedback between global change and silicate chemical weathering is used in geochemical models of atmospheric CO2, this feedback is believed to operate over a long timescale and is therefore generally left out of the current discussion of human impact upon the carbon budget. Here, we show, by synthesizing recent findings in rock weathering research and studies into biological carbon pump effects in surface aquatic ecosystems, that the carbon sink produced by carbonate weathering based on the H2O- carbonate-CO2-aquatic phototroph interaction on land not only totals half a billion tonnes per annum, but also displays a significant increasing trend under the influence of global warming and land use change; thus, it needs to be included in the global carbon budget. 展开更多

Although the inter-layer coupling in layered materials has attracted considerable interest due to its importance in determining physical properties of two- dimensional systems, studies on the inter-layer coupling in one-dimensional systems have so far been limited. Double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) are one of the most fundamental and ideal model systems to study the interqayer coupling in one-dimensional systems. In this work, Rayleigh scattering spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy are used to characterize the electronic transition between inner-and outer-nanotubes of the exactly same individual DWCNT. We find that the interqayer coupling is strong, leading to downshifts in most of the optical transition energies (up to -0.2 eV) compared to isolated CNTs. We also find that the presence of metallic tubes lead to stronger shifts. The inter-layer screening of Coulomb interactions is one of the key factors in explaining the observed results. 展开更多
