On the other hand, the adoption of creative interaction techniques allows the group to take a new look in the face of its learning (apprenticeship), to better manage its potential. Through analyzing the features of image schema considered by the authors as embodiment, recessiveness, sedimentation, logicality, scientificity, and dependency to cognitive metaphors and reviewing the definition of embodied cognition, the paper argues that image schema is an integration of bodily property and mental property, and accordingly a core and inseparable concept of embodied cognition by bridging body and mind. Image schema can help to explain how abstraction and inference generate from body-environment interactions, thus making the theory of embodied cognition more persuasive and reliable.展开更多

The URI online judge is a new online tool created with the main purpose of making programming practice more dynamic, interesting and stimulating for those who have just entered into the art of programming. The URI onl...The URI online judge is a new online tool created with the main purpose of making programming practice more dynamic, interesting and stimulating for those who have just entered into the art of programming. The URI online judge allows problem corrections in real time, interactivity between users, besides it allows flexibility in the choice of the programming language and it makes some supporting materials available. During the short time in which the tool has being used we have observed that it is a very good tool for self-study. As users of programming portals, the authors noticed some details that would be important to be implemented in a new tool, such as the separation of problems by categories. Another fundamental detail is the fact that this tool is available in two languages (Portuguese and English). This might facilitate the learning process for beginners, both locally and globally.展开更多

The experimental c...This paper presents a study that explored the effects of cooperative learning on Chinese students' interactional strategy use in the EFL classroom. A quasi-experimental research design was adopted. The experimental class (EC) participated in cooperative learning for 30 minutes in each 90-minute session in an integrated skills course while the control class (CC) had the same course following a teacher-fronted format. Interactional data of EC and CC were collected for comparison from the pre- and post-tasks conducted at the beginning and the end of the experiment respectively. The results show that EC appeared to have made more gains in interactional strategy use than CC after the experiment. Although CC made more progress in elaboration than EC, EC produced more uptakes, used much less Chinese and made fewer message abandonments, suggesting better oral fluency in their interaction as a result of cooperative learning.展开更多

It draws on a larger longitudinal study of six Chinese university students' critical web literacy practices, and focuses on one of the participants, Tao. Using interviews as the primary data source, the study explored how the student engaged in daily online literacy practices, and how he utilized digital media and open resources to learn English autonomously. The findings suggest that the Internet and digital media were his major tools for learning English. Tao's web literacy practices were connected to his identity construction and the development of critical thinking skills in the use of both English and Chinese. This paper raises questions about Chinese university students' autonomy in their digital literacy development and the learning of English in the digital age of globalization.展开更多
