The age of London is in the character of literary works, as Clarissa Dalloway comes to show the reader her feelings while walking on the London street. At the gate of St James Park, she has the dialectical moment of feeling "very young; at the same time unspeakably aged" (Woolf, 2010). That is a moment which represents a particular sense of personal history, when the past comes into one's own living present.展开更多

As an applied linguistics course, stylistics is eminently suitable for study and analysis of literature, because it clearly explicates literary effects through linguistic analysis. Many scholars have illustrated the use of stylistics analysis for the purposes of studying literature and teaching it, which is, pedagogical stylistics. However, this paper combines both the study of Stylistics as a discipline, which is the pedagogy of Stylistics, and the use of stylistics for teaching literature in general and poetry in particular. Namibia adopted English as its official language 22 years ago. Since then, both teachers and students have been struggling with the analysis of poetry. This study is an empirical one using qualitative methods in the author's research to determine the impact of the study of Stylistics on the understanding and teaching of literature in Namibia. The author uses traditional British poetry from the 16th century up to the 20th century alongside postcolonial poetry to assess the importance of culture in understanding poetry and examine the advantage of using stylistics to teach the poems that the author selects.展开更多

The literature reflects their love of Algerian culture and thought, and their revolt against French colonialism. The Algerian-born Arab author Muhammad Dib (1920-2003) wrote in French, mainly about the Algerian struggle for independence. Expelled in 1959 for supporting the Algerian revolution, he settled in Paris. Considered a pioneer of Algerian literature, he was the first Arab Algerian to write Western-style novels. His Algerian trilogy, La Grande Maison, L 'lncendie, and Le Mktier ~ tisser, was published between 1952 and 1957. Though autobiographical, the books trace both rural and urban life in pre-revolutionary times. Dib's 1959 thematically driven novel Un Otd Africaine (An African Summer), analyzed here, rather than depicting the Algerian revolution itself, describes its effect on the characters and their lives. Nevertheless, the novel, framed around a cross-section of Algerian society, reflects colonial government abuses and the common people's sacrifices for their dream of independence. Dib also depicts France's colonialist attitudes as a betrayal of the ideals of the French Revolution and claims to humanitarian values.展开更多

What impresses readers most is the frequent usage of Gothic features, like murders, ghost, witches, and so on. The paper will make a tentative study on Gothic settings, Gothic characters, and Gothic plots in Macbeth. The age of confusing right and wrong and horrible environmental settings will be expounded; then, the detailed analysis of Gothic characters like Macbeth, the trio of Witches and Lady Macbeth will be elaborated on; the plots of noumenal horror and mental terror will be elucidated finally. It is helpful for deeply understanding the drama's theme and interpreting the work from a new perspective, which plays a positive role in the research and development of Gothic literature and possesses certain significance for literary reference.展开更多
