The results showed that the distribution area of Korean musk deer (Moschus moschiferus parvipes) was sharply decreased from 1950s to 1999 in South Korea. Due to the road and forest road construction in the habitat of Korean musk deer, the musk deer habitats were fragmented and lost. And the illegal capture for economic benefits was the main reason of decreases in number of indi-viduals and habitats of this species. Forest roads in high elevation area were also used as the passages for illegal captures. For the conservation and protection of Korean musk deer, strict regulation of illegal capture is urgently needed.展开更多

This paper demonstrates the practical use of empirical databases, and focuses on the main drivers for ground support as demonstrated in conceptual models. (;older Associates' empirical databases used for ground support include a primary roof support database and a primary fib support database. Both are based on successful ground support designs installed in mines in Australia, the US, the LIK, South Africa, New Zealand, and Europe. The term "successful" refers to those designs that were used on a repeated basis for the purpose of roadway devel- opment. The primary roof support database indicates that the major factors influencing successful roof support designs are roof competency, expressed as the coal mine roof rating (CMRR), and in situ stress. In regard to the primary rib support database, it is evident from the current database that the primary factors affecting the capacity of rib support required for a successful design are roadway height and depth of cover. These databases have been used to help determine the minimum primary ground support designs required at many mine sites in Australasia, Europe, and the US. This paper will demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of these databases at two selected mines in Australia and the US. In order to improve the primary rib support database, this paper will also propose a new rib deformation rating based on the addition of site specific coal strength data for the Australian mines. The proposed rat- ing attempts to capture the main variables that define the behaviour of a buckling column.展开更多

Drawing lessons from how Asia exploited the developmental state's concept by designing institutions which targeted key public policy areas such as education, health, domestic savings, and rural development, or aligned infrastructures such as roads, transport and ports, to drive economic development. The paper explores how this approach can be applied in sub-Saharan Africa (or individual countries). The objective is to extricate constant factors impacting development both in ahistorical and atemporal terms. The investigation is guided by the key question: whether quality of institutions and institutional analysis can help explain development failures in Africa? Hence, on one part, it probes institutions, institution-making, public policy making and what uniquely the Asian developmental state did that can help illuminate institutional role in policymaking and application. In pursuing this objective, the paper is cognisant of the question by Brousseau et al. asked, regarding generalizability of institutional capabilities, "If growth-enhancing institutions are identified in a specific country, can other countries learn from and transplant these". The investigation concludes that in public policy and development strategy-making institutions do matter as they delimit or even help create possibilities necessary for development and its sustenance, and to a certain extent, they are the vital constant (factors) that explains development differentiations in different geographic spaces or time periods.展开更多

It is expected that there will be more heat waves, floods, bush fires, coastal erosion and drought. Unfortunately, Australia is vulnerable to climate change due its hot and dry climate and as the driest state; changes are already being felt in South Australia. There is an urgent need to start adapting to climate change to cope with present and predicted climate change in the future by changing or adjusting building regulations, land use plans, and land subdivision regulations. This paper aims to provide design guidelines for adaptation to climate change at the neighborhood level. A case study method was adopted to achieve the aim of this paper. The study was conducted in two stages. The first stage presents the current design of neighborhood and its adopted design parameters for climate change. The second part provides the design guidelines for adaptation to climate change at the neighborhood level. The case study has a well oriented grid iron layout that serves as the basis of orienting and sitting future buildings that can adapt to climate change. However, the orientation of roads is good, it will be necessary to reconfigure elements of landscaping and built environment in order to address climate change in built environment by modifying design elements.展开更多

Albania in the last few years had improved the legal frame so as to give the local authorities the right to initiate PPP projects. The local authorities have not built the expertise for such projects yet. The aim of this paper is to help the local authorities in Albania to support the building of the expertise for such projects. A financial model is used to make the required calculations for the bid at various phases of the project, although this paper is not intended to cover financial modeling in depth, the key inputs and outputs for the financial model are reviewed, including the financing costs. The model has to work within the constraints of: (I) the public authority's requirements for the PPP contract term and service fee profile; and (2) lenders' requirements for the term and payment profile of their debt.展开更多

This paper describes the structural design and construction of the oscillating water column "greenWAVE Energy Converter" which was constructed during 2013 and was planned to be deployed in shallow water off the South Australian coast in 2014. Rated initially at 1 MW, the greenWAVE unit will be dedicated to electricity production, although an option is available to produce desalinated seawater. The unit base is constructed from reinforced concrete designed to international maritime codes, and the unit will be founded in approximately 10-15 m of water. The upper portion of the device extends above sea level, housing the airwave turbine and electrical control systems.展开更多

The cloud classes are organised with one class from each country in the subjects: language, science, math, social science/history. The teachers from the three classes work together to design teaching they conduct together with assignments the students will be able to solve only in collaboration with their fellow students in the three classes. The three year project ends in 2014 but already now there are some interesting findings on how transnational teaching collaboration works for teachers and students. In Africa, cassava provides a basic daily source of dietary energy. It plays an important role in food security and incomes of many rural households in the southern Ethiopia. However, information available on production practices of cassava for the region is insufficient. Hence, field experiment was conducted at Awassa Agricultural Research Center for two successive cropping seasons from 2004 to 2006 to investigate the response of cassava to planting position and planting material. The treatments used were three planting positions (slant, vertical and horizontal) and five planting materials (main stem top part, main stem middle part, main stem bottom part, branch stake top part and branch stake bottom part) were combined in factorial arrangement and laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The result revealed that root yield was significantly (P 〈 0.05) affected by the interaction effects of the planting position and planting material. The highest yield (25.2 ton ha^-1) was obtained from the main stem top part planted in slant position whereas the least yield (6.5 ton ha^-1) was obtained from main stem bottom part planted in horizontal position. Based on the findings of this study, areas like Awassa with moderate rainfall slant and vertical planting of main stem top and middle parts could be used as planting material.展开更多

Merr.) leaves on the hematology of lactating buffalo. Four lactating buffaloes in Kanagarian Pamatang Panjang, Sijunjung district, West Sumatera, Indonesia were studied. The experiment used a Latin square design with four treatments and four replications/block. The treatments were control (without supplementary foliage, A), with cassava leaves (B), with gliricidia leaves (C) and with katuk leaves (D) each at 5 kg/haead/day. The hematology variables measured were erythrocytes and leucocytes counts, as well as levels of hemoglobin and hematocrit. The results showed that supplementary foliage of 5 kg/head/day of cassava, gliricidia or katuk as leaves significantly increased the erythrocytes count and hemoglobin level, but did not affect the number of leucocytes in lactating buffalo.展开更多
