The two mixtures were AEO9/sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and AEO9/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) at molar fraction of AEO9, A EO9 α =0.5. The surface properties of the surfactants, critical micelle concentration (CMC), effectiveness of surface tension reduction (γCMC), maximum surface excess concentration (Γmax) and minimum area per molecule at the air/solution interface (Amin) were determined for both individual surfactants and their mixtures. The significant deviations from ideal behavior (attractive interactions) of the nonionic/ionic surfactant mixtures were determined. Mixtures of both AEO9/SDS and AEO9/CTAB exhibited synergism in surface tension reduction efficiency and mixed micelle formation, but neither exhibited synergism in surface tension reduction effectiveness.展开更多

The intersection consisting of a collection of circles and saddle-shaped discs is called a topological graph. One can compute the Euler Characteristic number of the surface by calculating the characteristic number of the graph. The oceanic warm pool (OWP) defined by sea surface temperature (SST) is known as the "heat reservoir" in the ocean. The warmest portion in the ocean mirrors the fact that the wettest region with the largest accu...The oceanic warm pool (OWP) defined by sea surface temperature (SST) is known as the "heat reservoir" in the ocean. The warmest portion in the ocean mirrors the fact that the wettest region with the largest accumulation of water vapor (WV) in the atmosphere, termed atmospheric wet pool (AWP), should be identified because of the well-known Clausius-Clapeyron relationship between SST and WV. In this study, we used 14-year simultaneous observations of WV and SST from January 1988 to December 2001 to define the AWP and investigate its coupling and co-variations with the OWE The joint examination of the area variations, centroid locations, and zonal migrations of the AWP and OWP lead to a number of interesting findings. The results hopefully can contribute to our understanding of the air-sea interaction in general and characterization of E1 Nifio/La Nifia events in particular.展开更多
The effects of applying an electromagnetic interaction of low intensity (EMILI) on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of 7075-T651 Al alloy plates (13 mm in thickness) during modified indirect electric arc (M...The effects of applying an electromagnetic interaction of low intensity (EMILI) on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of 7075-T651 Al alloy plates (13 mm in thickness) during modified indirect electric arc (MIEA) welding were investigated. The welding process was conducted in a single pass with a heat input of ~1.5 kJ/mm. The microstructural observations of the welds were correlated with the effect of EMILI on the local mechanical properties and the corrosion resistance in natural seawater by means of microhardness measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, respectively. Microstructural characterization of the welds revealed a grain refinement in the weld metal due to the electromagnetic stirring induced by EMILI of 3 mT during welding. In addition, observations in the scanning electron microscope showed that the precipitation of Cu-rich phases and segregation of eutectics were reduced in the heat affected zone (HAZ) also as an effect of EMILI. The high corrosion dissolution of the 7075-T651 welds in natural seawater and the extent of overaging in the HAZ were reduced when welding with EMILI of 3 mT. Thus, EMILI along with the MIEA technique may lead to welded joints with better microstructural characteristics, improved mechanical properties in the HAZ and reduced electrochemical activity.展开更多
With enormous growth of the number of Internet users and appearance of new applications, characterization of Internet traffic has attracted more and more attention and has become one of the major challenging issues in...With enormous growth of the number of Internet users and appearance of new applications, characterization of Internet traffic has attracted more and more attention and has become one of the major challenging issues in telecommunication network over the past few years. In this paper, we study the network traffic pattern of the aggregate traffic and of specific application traffic, especially the popular applications such as P2P, VoIP that contribute most network traffic. Our study verified that majority Internet backbone traffic is contributed by a small portion of users and a power function can be used to approximate the contribution of each user to the overall traffic. We show that P2P applications are the dominant traffic contributor in current Internet Backbone of China. In addition, we selectively present the traffic pattern of different applications in detail.展开更多

According to this mechanism, a non-uniform current brings changes to the breaking criteria of sh...A mechanism is suggested in this paper concerning the effect of non-uniform current on the spectrum of short wind waves. According to this mechanism, a non-uniform current brings changes to the breaking criteria of short wind waves through modulating the surface drift, and hence enhances or weakens wave breaking. Some modification is proposed to the source term, which represents the spectral rate of wave energy dissipation due to wave breaking so that the source term can incorporate this mechanism. In order to illustrate whether this mechanism is significant, a real case is studied, in which the wind waves propagate on a tidal current flowing over the sea bottom covered with sand waves. Finally, the effect of the new mechanism on the equilibrium spectrum of small scale gravity waves is discussed. Numerical estimates suggest that, for water depths less than 50 m and wavelengths less than 1 m, this current field may result in distinct spatial variations of the wave breaking criteria, the spectral rate of wave energy dissipation and the equilibrium spectrum of short gravity waves.展开更多

The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2/c with a = 12.455(3), b = 6.202(1), c = 16.555(3) ? b = 106.776(3), V = 1224.3(4) 3, Z = 4, Mr = 357.76, Dc =1.941 g/cm3, m(MoKa) = 1.827 mm-1, F(000) = 724, R = 0.0601 and wR = 0.1417 for 908 observed reflections (I > 2s(I)). The Cu(Ⅱ) atom is coordinated by an elongated square pyramid geometry. The deprotonated isonicotinic acid N-oxides form a double-bridge between each pair of Cu(Ⅱ) ions in trans form through two oxygen atoms from the carboxyl groups and two other oxygen atoms from the -NO groups, respectively, which leads to an infinite one dimensional chain. The two adjacent elongated Cu(Ⅱ) square pyramidal geometries are arranged in trans form in the same chain. The OH…O hydrogen bonds extend the chain structure into two-dimensional layers.展开更多

In particularly, the estimations of all main effects are A-optimal in a mixed strength (2, 2)3 orthogonal array and the estimations of all main effects and two-factor interactions in G~ x G~ are A-optimal in a mixed strength (2, 2)4 orthogonal array. Porous and single crystalline platinum (Pt) nanoparticles (NPs) have been successfully synthesized by reduction of H2PtC16.6H20 and then investigated by optical spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. H...Porous and single crystalline platinum (Pt) nanoparticles (NPs) have been successfully synthesized by reduction of H2PtC16.6H20 and then investigated by optical spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. H2PtCI6-6H20 was reduced using ethylene glycol in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone under highly acidic conditions (pH 〈 1) to form single crystalline Pt particles about 5 nm in size. These particles were then stacked via {100} facets, forming 50-nm length porous nanocubes with a mosaic structure. The porous Pt NPs exhibited excellent catalytic properties for methanol oxidation. In particular, the electrochemical surface area was -63 m2/g, five times higher than that for non-porous Pt NPs prepared using a conventional method. We suggest that the high catalytic activity of porous Pt NPs is due to a combination of the crystalline structure having exposed {100} facets and a porous morphology.展开更多
