Local governments have long been ardently pursuing the industrial specialization effect(MAR externalities) and industrial diversification effect(Jacobs externalities). Such a pursuit has resulted in severe distortion of resource allocation and negative effect on sustainability of local economic development. Regarding the effect from both MAR and Jacobs externalities on local economic development existing literature records notable disputes. Therefore, for local economic development, one important issue is which externality(MAR or Jacobs) can better bring the effect into play. By studying a panel data of 283 Chinese cities from 2003 to 2012 and applying dynamic plane data GMM method, this paper conducted a regression analysis of the relationship among industrial agglomeration externalities, city size, and regional economic development. The result indicates that with regard to the whole nation, MAR externalities are conducive to regional economy development whereas Jacobs externalities will, to an extent, restrain regional economic development. As regards eastern, middle, and western regions, MAR externalities are conducive only to the economic development of the eastern region; their effects on middle and western regions are insignificant. Moreover, the interaction item between MAR externalities and city size has a significant negative synergistic effect on national economic development and a certain acceleration effect on eastern region as well as a strong negative synergistic effect on the middle region and an insignificant effect on the western region. The interaction item between Jacobs externalities and city size has a positive synergistic effect on only the middle region and has an insignificant synergistic effect on both eastern and western regions. Capital stock and labor input have significant accelerating effects on GDP growth per capita of Chinese cities, whereas material capital and labor input remain primary driving forces for Chinese local economic development. Furthermore, human capital contributes to accelerating urban economic development, whereas government intervention restrains urban economic development. 展开更多

The primary object of this paper is to examine the spatial-temporal pattern evolution of manufacturing geographical agglomeration of the old industrial base.Industrial spatial agglomeration index and concentration ratio are used in this paper.Multiple linear regression models are also applied to try to explore the internal driving mechanisms on manufacturing geographical agglomeration. The results show that:1) the manufacturing agglomeration degree of Jilin Province is increasing gradually. The spatial polarization structure is visible;and the central region is the agglomeration area,in addition, the manufacturing industries of Changchun Proper present a trend of dispersion;2) the structure of manufacturing industries has changed, and the concentration ratio of labor-intensive manufacturing industry is declining, while the proportions of technology-intensive and capital-intensive manufacturing industry are relatively rising;3) marketing level, location accessibility, labor resources, capital, science and technology innovation capability, scale economy and the level of globalization affect manufacturing agglomeration with different degree. There are significant differences of the effects about employment, technology, the quality of residents and the export-oriented market on the industrial concentration ratio;4) in the future, the impact of policy and institution,export-oriented market and quality of resident on manufacturing geographical agglomeration pattern will be more profound. 展开更多

With the acceleration of the rise of central China and the western development drive, industrial relocation from China's eastern region to the central and western regions is in full swing. However, does the relocation demonstrate industrial clustering effect? Empirical studies based on twenty two-digit manufacturing industries in 27provinces from 2000 to 2009 demonstrate that industrial clustering effect appeared in central and western regions which had undertaken industrial relocation from eastern region; however, the studies do not show excessive administrative interference as evidenced by the significantly improved productivity of the relocated industries. Compared with non-labor- intensive manufacturing industries, labor-intensive manufacturing industries are easier to form cyclic accumulative effects. Studies also revealed that improvement in supporting infrastructure, industrial chain and higher labor quality in non-agriculture employment during urbanization are significant for central and western regions to undertake industrial relocation. 展开更多
