How and where did the children growing up without traditional family structure learn to be men? This study examines a specific group of children – young apprentices in medeival England – in order to reconstruct how fatherless sons learned the concept of masculinity. To further the question – did the separation of their natal fathers during their youth made boys less masculine? By examining the indentures, court records and various administrative records, this study demonstrates that, apprentices went through more masculine relationships than the children grew up with their fathers’ prescence, because masters wielded he supreme power which made them de facto “surrogate fathers”. This study also manisfests that apprenticeship was the extension of fatherhood, because it led apprentices to experience absolute subordination to their masters, reducing them to the position of “full-dependence” in their social communities.展开更多

Recently, the anion exchange membranes with gemini-cation side chains exhibit superior ion conductivity due to their good nanophase separation. However, the costly and complicated synthesis limits their scaling up and commercialization. To address this problem, a convenient synthetic procedure under mild conditions is well developed. A tertiary amine precursor is introduced onto the polymer by the nucleophilic substitution reaction to avoid the conventional chloro/bromo-methylation. Followed by a simple Menshutkin reaction with 6- bromo-N,N,N-trimethylhexan-1-am inium bromide, the polym er electrolytes are obtained in a high yield. The resulting anion exchange membranes with high conductivity, good fuel cell performance and restricted swelling suggest the potential for the application in fuel cell devices.展开更多

Treatment of aldehyde with arylamine, 2-methanesulfonyl-4,6-dimeth-oxypyrimidine and sodium borohydride provides good overall yield. The p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) can be used as activator and is generally needed in the reaction. Dioxane is the preferred reaction solvent, but reactions can also be carried out in tetrahydrofuran (THF), MeCN, toluene and dichloromethane. The procedure is carried out effectively in the presence of K2CO3. The reaction proceeds smoothly with aromatic aldehydes and arylamines possessing elec-tron-donating or-withdrawing groups. This method can be applied to the synthesis of the oilseed rape herbicide and is superior to the classical one in several aspects: cutting out several purification steps, minimizing solvent use and chemical waste, and saving time. Its advantages such as operational convenience, high-efficient synthesis, and starting material availability make it a desirable method for preparing amines with molecular diversity and biological activity.展开更多
