After these projects were performed, the realization of “intelligent automation" was transferred and improved. The academician Qian Xuesen has made a speech to summarize the importance of man-computer cooperative information processing, and the aim was not intelligent computer. The man-computer cooperative intelligent systems should be studied and developed. The establishment of a new discipline on intelligent science and intelligent technology is proposed by the author of this article.展开更多

This will result in great challenges to manufacturing systems in all sectors. In the future of manufacturing, all devices and systems should have sensing and basic intelligence capabilities for control and adaptation. In this study, after discussing multiscale dynamics of the modern manufacturing system, a five-layer functional structure is proposed for uncertainties processing. Multiscale dynamics include: multi-time scale, spacetime scale, and multi-level dynamics. Control action will differ at different scales, with more design being required at both fast and slow time scales. More quantitative action is required in low-level operations, while more qualitative action is needed regarding high-level supervision. Intelligent manufacturing systems should have the capabilities of flexibility, adaptability, and intelligence. These capabilities will require the control action to be distributed and integrated with different approaches, including smart sensing, optimal design, and intelligent learning. Finally, a typical jet dispensing system is taken as a real-world example for multiscale modeling and control.展开更多

One is an on-line fuzzy inference mechanism and another is a conventional PID controller. In the fuzzy inference mechanism, three adjustable factors xp, xi, and xd are introduced. Their function is to further modify and optimize the result of the fuzzy inference to make the controller have the optimal control effect on a given object. The optimal values of these factors are determined based on the ITAE criterion and the flexible polyhedron search algorithm of Nelder and Mead. This PID controller has been used to control a D.C. motor of the intelligent artificial leg designed by the authors. The result of computer simulation indicates that the design of this controller is very effective and can be widely used to control different kinds of objects and processes.展开更多

This paper provides a dif-ferent perspective by examining relevant challenges and providing examples of some less-talked-about yet essential topics, such as hybrid systems, redefining advanced manufacturing, basic building blocks of new manufacturing, ecosystem readiness, and technology scalahility. The first major challenge is to (re-)define what the manufacturing of the future will he, if we wish to: ① raise public awareness of new manufacturing's economic and societal impacts, and ② garner the unequivocal support of policy- makers. The second major challenge is to recognize that manufacturing in the future will consist of sys-tems of hybrid systems of human and robotic operators; additive and suhtractive processes; metal and composite materials; and cyher and physical systems. Therefore, studying the interfaces between con- stituencies and standards becomes important and essential. The third challenge is to develop a common framework in which the technology, manufacturing business case, and ecosystem readiness can he eval- uated concurrently in order to shorten the time it takes for products to reach customers. Integral to this is having accepted measures of "scalahility" of non-information technologies. The last, hut not least, chal-lenge is to examine successful modalities of industry-academia-government collaborations through public-private partnerships. This article discusses these challenges in detail.展开更多
