Owing to a lack of consensus regarding what constitutes a smart city, diverse smart city architectur...A novel initiative in providing advanced civic amenities is the idea of smart city driven by the lnternet of Things. Owing to a lack of consensus regarding what constitutes a smart city, diverse smart city architectures have been proposed. However, it is observed that adequate consideration is not given to the most important element of a smart city i.e. its people. In our opinion, energy efficient technologically driven city does not necessarily lead to a smart city. Ethics, tradition and law form essential ingredients of complex social palette that cannot be ignored. In this work we propose Ethics-Aware Object-Oriented Smart City Architecture (EOSCA) that has two distinguishing features. Firstly, we propose an object oriented layered architecture where an object represents an abstraction of a real world thing along with requisite security and ethics parameters. Secondly, we propose to integrate socio-cultural and ethical aspects within the smart city architecture by dedicating a separate ethics layer. Such enhancement not only addresses the challenge of privacy and security of a smart city, but also makes it people friendly by incorporating ethics. Such measures would facilitate social acceptance of smart city paradigm and augment its economic value.展开更多

The picture of ...Basing on a generalization of Wong's equations, the problem of motions for particles in the Lorentz gauge field configuration, which is Schwarzschild-like solution of Yang-Mills equations, is studied. The picture of interaction between particles with the Lorentz gauge field is described in an analogous manner to that between isotopic-spin-carrying particles and Yang-Mills field. By examining the effective potential and the equations of orbits for particles, it is found that the considered motions possess some qualitative features resembling to motions of particles in a centrally symmetric gravitational field.展开更多
Although the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (JSOG) endorses new-type PGD using CGH for only carriers of balanced chromosomal translocations, it is against the ethical guidelines of the JSOG to decide whe...Although the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (JSOG) endorses new-type PGD using CGH for only carriers of balanced chromosomal translocations, it is against the ethical guidelines of the JSOG to decide whether or not embryos should be implanted due to aneuploidy discovered as a result of new-type PGD. In the author's opinion, it should be at the discretion of the JSOG's own randomized controlled trials, which should involve multiple facilities, whether or not a scientific basis can be found for the value of the new-type PGD in cases of recurrent miscarriage, in cases of implantation failure, and in cases where the women are of advanced maternal age. Dr. Netsu's 36 cases of selective reduction may be against the Japanese Maternal Health Protection Law that prohibits abortion due to congenital disease, but with the backdrop that there are many abortions that are performed as a result of parental convenience in Japan, it is difficult to understand the difference between the over 300,000 abortions that are performed every year in Japan and Dr. Netsu's prescribed surgery which is designed to selectively reduce fetuses with congenital disease for the purpose of evading physical danger for women with multiple gestations.展开更多

During the past 185 years, 25 humid years and 26 ar...A relative humidity series of April-August during 1825-2009 AD was reconstructed based on tree- ring width of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica for the Hulunbuir area. During the past 185 years, 25 humid years and 26 arid years were identified in the reconstruction, as well as 6 wet periods and 6 dry periods. The relative humidity has decreased since approximately the 1950s, suggesting a warm and dry climate trend in the study area. The reconstruction can be compared with those of the surrounding tree ring reconstructed precipitation and rela- tive humidity series at the decadal scale, reflecting the consistency of the regional climate variations. Besides, significant positive correlations are revealed between the reconstruction and the normalized difference vegetation index of the Hulunbuir grassland. And the decrease in relative humidity will cause negative impacts on the Hulunbuir grassland. Comparisons between the sandstorm records and the relative humidity of the study area indicate that strong sandstorms occurred more frequently in Hulunbuir when the relative humidity was low. Therefore, under the downward trend in relative humidity, more effort should be made to protect the grassland ecology and treat the bare sand land for the local and surrounding areas.展开更多
High-capacity metal chalcogenides often suffer from low initial coulombic efficiency(ICE)and serious capacity fading owing to the shuttle effect and volumetric expansion.Various carbon-coating and fixing methods were ...High-capacity metal chalcogenides often suffer from low initial coulombic efficiency(ICE)and serious capacity fading owing to the shuttle effect and volumetric expansion.Various carbon-coating and fixing methods were used to improve the above-mentioned performance.However,the synthesis processes of them are complex and time-consuming,limiting their engineering applications.Herein,polar polymer binder sodium polyacrylate(PAANa)is selected as an example to solve the problems of metal chalcogenides(bare micro-sized FeS)without any modification of the active materials.The special function of the polymer binder in the interface between the active material particles and the electrolytes demonstrates that a PAANa-induced network structure on the surface of ion sulfide microparticles not only buffers the mechanical stress of particles during discharging-charging,but also participates in forming a ductile solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)with high interfacial ion transportation and enhanced ICE.The cyclic stability and rate performance can be simultaneously improved.This work not only provides a new understanding of the binder on electrode,but also introduces a new way to improve the performance of batteries.展开更多
