Motifs of revulsion create complex bedding texture of the plot, which introduces personality and inner visions of characters in the novel. It unifies the binding power of narrative history and informs readers various aspects of morality in the Victorian era, in addition, to present a lyrical tone of social ethics. The following analysis takes Eliot's Middlemarch as the base text. I shall explain the lexical meaning and textual discussion of revulsion, resentment and disgust spirally within its context, then illustrate with paranthetical examples and different idioms. Later arguments turn to what Eliot defines as faction of human duty in life, which is the nuanced requirement of a subject stands against himself or herself through the disposition of conscience as verdict. This disposition provides unlimited parallels for instinctive presence of internal feelings and thresholds that are constantly affecting moral understandings.展开更多

He is not only a turn-of-the-century social reformer, but also an artist deeply concerned with human relationships. His famouse work--Sons and Lovers (1994), describes the process of young Paul's growth with young Lawrence's personal life as the model. The present paper, first of all, gives a brief introduction of the novel. Then the three forms of unreal love in the story are what the present paper mainly explored. Firstly, the love between Paul and his mother is a distorted love between a mother and a son. Secondly, the love between Paul and Miriam is an immature love of young people. Thirdly, the love between Paul and Clara is physical and short-lived. The three forms of love are unreal and doomed to be fruitless展开更多

Through his flexible application of symbolism, the novel is presented with fragmentary scenes instead of the usual plots, and a lot of separate and unrelated images are employed to reflect the mental conflicts among the major characters. By analyzing the symbolism in this paper, the author hopes to find the importance of symbolism in strengthening the distinct characteristics, enhancing the development of the plot, and hence the emphasis of the theme of the novel.展开更多

Lawrence and his novel Lady Chatterley's lover are sometimes prejudicially associated in the minds of the general public with pornography. Yet after meditative reading, we find that Lawrence, through revelation of Connie's gradual awakening from genuine love, has made his utmost effort to explore possible solutions to harmonious androgyny between men and women so as to revitalize the distorted human nature caused by the industrial civilization.展开更多

Based on the analysis of college students' frustrations, this paper explores the causes of network behavior anomie for college students, which mainly include: dissatisfaction in real communication, game addiction to the network, craving online pornography, and hooking on online shopping. In addition, it also investigates the ways to wipe out mental frustration in such a cyber era. These ways mainly are to strenzthen online education and management, to make psychological counseling, and to carry on frustration education.展开更多

This risk assessment effort was developed under the framework of an integral disaster risk management project whose goal was to connect risk reduction activities by using open access and state-of-theart risk models. A probabilistic approach was used for the analysis of seismic, landslide, and volcanic hazards to obtain stochastic event sets suitable for probabilistic loss estimation and to generate risk results in different metrics after aggregating in a rigorous way the losses associated to the different hazards. Detailed and high resolution exposure databases were used for the building stock and infrastructure of the city together with a set of vulnerability functions for each of the perils considered. The urban and territorial ordering plan of the city was updated for socioeconomic development and land use using the hazard and risk inputs and determinants, which cover not only the current urban area but also those adjacent areas where the expansion of Manizales is expected to occur. The emergency response capabilities of the city were improved by taking into account risk scenarios and after updating anautomatic and real-time post-earthquake damage assessment.展开更多

Often overlooked in the history of the genre, the Bloomsbury short story has a claim to be an important aspect of the twentieth-century accounts of the short story form. Attention to Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, Vita Sackville- West, E.M. Forster and others, such as Arnold Bennett and D.H. Lawrence, indicates their widespread engagement with the genre and the ways in which they treated it from fragmented conversation, as in Woolf s "The String Quartet," to Foster's employment of linear narrative detail in "The Road from Colonus." Formal experiments with syntax, imagery, and vocabulary and prose rhythm exhibit the seriousness of the short story for Bloomsbury authors. The influence of the Russians is particularly important with Che- kov dominating the reading and writing of Woolf, Mansfield, Lawrence and others. The very form of publication--mostly journals and magazines--is also crucial in shaping the length and structure of the short story. Attention to experimentation, as well as renewal, of the genre balances the impact of the short story on writers today and the question of a successor to the efforts and achievements of Bloomsbury's authors. A reading of the short stories of Julian Barnes explores this possibility.展开更多
