This work aims at finding pedestrian walking characteristics at U-type stairs according to the width change of stairs and appropriate spot for installing piezoelectric energy harvesting.The number of pedestrian at two...This work aims at finding pedestrian walking characteristics at U-type stairs according to the width change of stairs and appropriate spot for installing piezoelectric energy harvesting.The number of pedestrian at two kinds of stairs(one is stairs with 1.5 m in width and the other is stairs with 3 m in width) was estimated by calculating the number of steps on the stairs by a zone which is divided into 30 cm×30 cm.The result shows high density in the middle in the case of narrow stairs but traffic is concentrated on stair inside(pillar side) in stairs with large width.In conclusion,the location for installation of piezoelectric energy harvesting system should be considered differently on stairs width and the number of installation depends on total expected traffic and the expected traffic for a device.展开更多

Location-aware applications have been used widely with the assistance of the latest positioning features in Smart Phone such as GPS,AGPS,etc.However,all the existing applications gather users' geographical data an...Location-aware applications have been used widely with the assistance of the latest positioning features in Smart Phone such as GPS,AGPS,etc.However,all the existing applications gather users' geographical data and transfer them into the pertinent information to give meaning and value.For this kind of solutions,the user's privacy and security issues might be raised because the geographical location has to be exposed to the service provider.A novel and practical solution is proposed in this article to provide the relative location of two mobile users based on their WiFi scanned results without any additional sensors.There is no privacy concern in this solution because end users will not collect and send any sensitive information to the server.This solution adopts a Client/Server(C/S) architecture,where the mobile user as a client reports the ambient WiFi APs and the server calculates the distances based on the WiFi AP's topological relationships.A series of technologies are explored to improve the accuracy of the estimated distance and the corresponding algorithms are proposed.We also prove the feasibility with the prototype of "Circle Your Friends" System(CYFS) on Android phone which lets the mobile user know the distance between him and his social network friends.展开更多

By using an AVL system, it is possible to know vehicle positions at the dispatch center, which allows the use of several applications, s...The use of AVL (automatic vehicle locator) systems has increased considerably. By using an AVL system, it is possible to know vehicle positions at the dispatch center, which allows the use of several applications, such as safety and security, logistics, and emergency response. High communication and data storage costs, however, lead to a low position update rate with the AVL products available, causing poor track representation, and making the route determined by the vehicle in urban areas almost illegible. This paper proposes a new approach by using intelligent techniques to choose the best position update moment to improve track representations. The principle underlying these techniques is based on vehicle status analysis (speed, direction and timing), which tries to determine when a position update is required, in order to better represent the path that a vehicle has traced, thus avoiding excessive communication and data storage. Therefore, the better the correspondence between the traced track and the real track followed by the vehicle, the greater the added value offered by system applications. This enhancement to the representation of the track allows the creation of new applications in the realm of AVL systems, particularly for situations where accuracy plays an important role.展开更多

The treatments were: morning watering (MW), evening watering (EW), morning and evening watering (MEW), morning watering + mulch (MW + ML), evening watering + mulch (EW + ML), morning and evening watering + mulch (MEW + ML), mulch (ML) and Control. Height and girth increase, number of green leaves, yield and yield parameters were the highest in the MEW + ML which were identical to those of Evening watering + mulch and morning + evening watering. The evening or morning watering with mulch was identical but showed better performance than those without mulch. The mulched plants and the control showed the least performance. It is therefore recommended that proper water conservation in plantain plantation will improve banana survival during dry season and subsequently increase yield in the study area.展开更多

This paper discusses the development of C++ classes, which may be used for development of software for location aware management and control, specifically in merchant shipping, so as to provide improved safety, increased automation, prevention of pollution and reducing the work burden of the crew. The GPS is used in conjunction with the regionally accessible nested global shorelines (RANGS) dataset for this purpose. The design of two main C++ classes named CShorelines and CGPSInput have been discussed. A control system mandatory on all oil-tankers above 150 GRT (and few other vessels) called ODMCS has been made location aware using the novel software developed and the results obtained have been critically examined and presented.展开更多

In the supersonic part of the incoming flow, shock waves appear in the front part of the blades and propagate in the upstream direction. In case of multiple blade rows, steady simulations have to impose an azimuthal averaging (mixing plane) which prevents these shock waves to extend upstream. In the present paper, several mixing plane locations are numerically tested and compared in a supersonic configuration. An analytical method is used to describe the shock pattern. It enables to take a critical look at the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) steady results. Based on this method, the shock losses are also evaluated. The good agreement between analytical and numerical values shows that this method can be useful to wisely forecast the mixing plane location and to evaluate the shift in performances due to the presence of the mixing plane.展开更多

A method of image morphology in detecting and extracting the initial welding position during the autonomous welding process is described.During the process,firstly visual sensing technology is used to capture the stra...A method of image morphology in detecting and extracting the initial welding position during the autonomous welding process is described.During the process,firstly visual sensing technology is used to capture the straight seam image,and secondly the image edges are detected by morphological corrosion edge detection algorithm,with which can retain the critical information while filter other interferences effectively at the same time.Then morphological processing algorithm is used to conduct the direction of filter by selecting the multidirectional linear structuring elements and finally get the initial weld position point coordinates with the Hough transform.The algorithm is simple,rapid,self-adaptability with high accuracy for interferences except long lines so as to accomplish the entire process of detecting the initial welding position.It can meet the practical demands of automatic guidance for robotic welding.展开更多
