METHODS: A population-based postal study was carried out....AIM: To study the natural history and prevalence of heartburn at a 10-year interval, and to study the effect of heartburn on various symptoms and activities. METHODS: A population-based postal study was carried out. Questionnaires were mailed to the same age- and gender-stratified random sample of the Icelandic population (aged 18-75 years) in 1996 and again in 2006. Subjects were classified with heartburn if they reported heartburn in the preceding year and/or week, based on the definition of heartburn. RESULTS: Heartburn in the preceding year was reported in 42.8% (1996) and 44.2% (2006) of subjects, with a strong relationship between those who experienced heartburn in both years. Heartburn in the precedingweek was diagnosed in 20.8%. There was a significant relationship between heartburn, dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome. IndMduals with a body mass index (BMI) below or higher than normal weight were more likely to have heartburn. Heartburn caused by food or beverages was reported very often by 20.0% of subjects. CONCLUSION: Heartburn is a common and chronic condition. Subjects with a BMI below or higher than normal weight are more likely to experience heartburn. Heartburn has a great impact on daily activities, sleep and quality of life.展开更多
Two silkworm strains viz, B20 A (high cocoon shell ratio) and C.Nichi (low cocoon shell ratio) were sib mated for 10 generations to determine the homozygosis. Both bulked segregant analysis(BSA) and near isogenic line...Two silkworm strains viz, B20 A (high cocoon shell ratio) and C.Nichi (low cocoon shell ratio) were sib mated for 10 generations to determine the homozygosis. Both bulked segregant analysis(BSA) and near isogenic lines (NIL) studies were done to identify the RFLP markers closely linked to cocoon shell parameters. Three hundred and fifty two random clones were identified as the low copy number sequence and used for identification of Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphic (RFLP) marker linked to cocoon weight and cocoon shell character. In the bulk segregant analysis, DNA from the parents (B20 A, C.Nichi), F 1 and F 2 progeny of high shell ratio (HSR) and low shell ratio (LSR) were screened for hybridization with the random clones. Polymorphic banding pattern achieved through southern hybridization with different probes indicated the probable correlation of polymorphism with high and low cocoon shell character which are possible landmarks in identifying the putative marker(s) for the cocoon shell character. Out of the 100 probes tried with parents, F 1, F 2 and their bulks, 10 probes were found to be closely linked to cocoon shell characters.展开更多

The mining system can improve economic benefits b...In order to enhance coal recovery ratio of open pit coal mines, a new extraction method called zonal mining system for residual coal around the end-walls is presented. The mining system can improve economic benefits by exploiting haulage and ventilation roadways from the exposed position of coal seams by uti- lizing the existing transportation systems. Moreover, the main mining parameters have also been dis- cussed. The outcome shows that the load on coal seam roof is about 0.307 MPa and the drop step of the coal seam roof about 20.3 m when the thickness of cover and average volume weight are about 120 m and 0.023 MN/m~ respectively. With the increase of mining height and width, the coal recovery ratio can be improved. However, when recovery ratio is more than 0.85, the average stress on the coal pillar will increase tempestuously, so the recovery ratio should also be controlled to make the coal seam roof safe. Based on the numerical simulation results, it is concluded that the ratio of coal pillar width to height should be more than 1.0 to make sure the coal pillars are steady, and there are only minor dis- placements on the end-walls.展开更多

Primers were designed according to the genomic sequence of norovims i...The aim of this study is to explore the genomic molecular organization and genogroup of human nomvirus from infected infants in Guangzhou of China. Primers were designed according to the genomic sequence of norovims in the GenBank, and the nomvirus genome was amplified by RT-PCR. The PCR- products were cloned into T vector and sequenced, and the genomic nucleotide sequences were analyzed with the programs CLUSTAL W/X, DNASTAR and RAT (Recombination Analysis Tool). The NVgz01 strain genome is 7558 bp in length and encodes three open reading frames (GenBank accession No. is DQ369797). The genomic sequences of NVgz01 were compared with those of nomvirus in GenBank, which revealed that the homology with genogroup Ⅱ ranges between 76%-90%, and genogroup Ⅰ between 43%-44%. The ORF1 region shared 94% and 88% identity with Mc37 and Famiington strains, respectively; the capsid region (ORF2) shared 65% and 94% identity with Mc37 and Farmington strains, respectively. Phylogenetic trees were reconstructed by the neighbor-joining method. Comparative complete sequence analysis of the NVgz01 with reported human norovirus genomic sequences revealed that this isolate belongs to genogroup Ⅱ . The ORF1 and ORF2 regions shared different identity with Mc37 and Fannington strains, suggesting NVgz01 could be a recombinant virus.展开更多
