This will increase runoff and soil erosion, and reduce agricultural productivity, particularly on vulnerable mountainous agricultural lands that is already exhibiting high rates of soil erosion. Haphazard implementation of soil and water conservation (SWC) interventions on scattered fields is inefficient in reducing soil erosion. The objective of this study was to identify areas at high risk of erosion to aid the design and implementation of sustainable SWC using GIS analysis and farmers' participation approach. A 25 m digital elevation model (DEM) was used to derive layers of flow accumulation, slope steepness and land curvature, which were used to derive an erosion-risk (priority) map for the whole watershed. Boundaries of farmers' fields were mapped and verified by the community and each field was classified into high, moderate or low erosion risk. Fields with low flow accumulation (top of hill) and/or steep slope and/or convex slope were assigned high erosion risk and therefore high implementation priority. The study showed that more than 54% of the fields were classified into high erosion risk areas. Accordingly, a community-watershed plan was established, revised and approved by the community.Incentive loans to implement SWC measures were distributed to 100 farmers based on the priorities of their fields. Judged by local farmers and using 16 randomly selected fields, 90% of the targeted areas were correctly identified using the erosion risk map. After two years, the conservation measures had led to marked improvement of soil conservation. The approach is simple and easy to comprehend by the community and provides scientific basis to prioritize the implementation of SWC and to target the most degraded areas, which amplify the impact of these in reducing the vulnerability to land degradation.展开更多

Thousand of households are at risk due to severe annual floods. This study applied the LVI (livelihood vulnerability index) to estimate flood vulnerability of Phu Huu and Ta Danh villages in An Giang province. Data on socio-demographics, livelihoods, health, social networks, physical, financial and natural resources, natural disasters and climate variability were collected from a survey of 120 households in each village. From these data the LVI of each village was calculated. Results show that the overall LV1 of Phu Huu village, located in the early flooded zone, is higher than that of Ta Danh village, located in the late flooded zone. The analysis also indicated that this practical method can be applied for other purposes such as to monitor vulnerability, evaluate development programs or policy effectiveness by incorporating with scenario comparison.展开更多

Based on the data monitoring applied in the school building, this work is focused on the parameters acquisition and operation analysis of the GSHP system in Tangshan. Results show the average COPs(coefficient of performance) are2.85 and 2.70 in summer and winter, respectively, and heat(cold) unbalance underground existed after whole year operation. The analysis of data also indicates that the direct borehole air-conditioning saved some power consumption obviously in the early stage of summer and energy saving of the GSHP system depended remarkably on its operation and management level. Besides the observation points of ground temperature are laid for a large-scale GSHP system, and the hydraulic balance of the pipes group needs to be concerned specially in safeguarding better reliability.展开更多

In response, a tsunami alert, a tsunami warning and an advisory were issued for the entire Pacific coast region. This research investigates the evacuation behavior of ships by AIS (automatic identification system) data in Onahama port after the tsunami warning was issued. The unusual behavior observed was attributed to the emergency evacuation of ships. This research investigates the evacuation behaviors of the vessels using the data obtained from AIS, around the Onahama Port during alerting the major tsunami warning. The result shows that most vessels in the port started evacuating approximately 10 min after the major tsunami warning and completed offshore evacuation 40 min after this warning. This contributed in understanding the actual status of the vessel evacuation. In addition, the travel paths of each vessel revealed the influence of the tsunami on the vessels. Furthermore, the exceptional situation where several vessels moved in the same direction at the speed almost same for about 2 hours was confirmed. As a result, it can be estimated that the waves that affected both vessels were the drawback of the tsunamis.展开更多

Identifying the vulnerable areas to pollution is one way of prevention. Many models have been offered for this purpose. In this study, a numerical rating scheme, called DRASTIC has been used for evaluating potential for groundwater pollution in pelly-mianrudan plain that is located in northern Lalli city in Khuzestan province. Resulted map obtained in GIS environment shows that the study area has DRASTIC index of 71-150 that is divided to five vulnerable zones namely no significance, very low, low, low to moderate, moderate to high. Maximum groundwater vulnerability correspondent low to medium zone that approximately covers 45 percentage of the study area and other parts on the northwest and center of the study area has high vulnerability. The sensitivity analysis showed that correlation DRASTIC index with net Recharge (0.68) and Impact of vadose zone media (0.63) parameters is more than other parameters in the study pelly-mianrudan area. The statistical analysis confirms that parameter soil media and topography are the most sensitive to contamination, followed in importance by parameters aquifer medium, vadose zone, recharge, hydraulic conductivity and depth to water.展开更多

Questionnaires were designed and administered to collect data from the chiefs, queen mothers, family heads and opinion leaders of the area. Results of the studies indicated that there had been an increase of about 2000% in land values from 2007 to 2011. Also there was an increase in demand for lands in the Cape Three Points with acquisitions usually ranging from 10 acres to over 600 acres. It also emerged that the livelihood of the inhabitants of Cape Three Points was threatened due to the conversion of arable land to non-agriculture uses. This change in land uses has significant negative impacts on land degradation and its related reduction of agricultural and food production in the area. The technical difficulties of assessing land degradation, the weakness of existing databases, and the poorly explored linkages between land degradation and other aspects of rural development were some of the limitation of the studies. The study increased awareness of the chiefs and other land owners to reserve land for the future generation and for agriculture purposes. The study drew government's attention through the Ahanta West District Assembly to the planning needs of the towns in the Cape Three Points to streamline land use of the area.展开更多

In earlier situations for these types of cases conventional method of repair and rehabilitation has been used. These innovative approaches for restoration have led to enormous saving of cost and time. The advantages of post tensioning are well known in the civil industry and are being used for the last 40 to 50 years. Post tensioning is one of the best methods to induce stresses in the concrete before application of live load and this technique can also be widely used for restoration and rehabilitation of structures. Unlike the use of post-tensioning in new structures there are no definite methods or codes for application in restoration and rehabilitation of structures. For restoration and rehabilitation of structures, PT (post tensioned) technique can be applied in combination with other techniques and materials available. Bridge lifting is a tricky and risky job especially when the superstructure is displaced appreciably by a natural calamity, etc.. Not only the present state of structure needs proper study before commencement of restoration and rehabilitation but also calls for careful execution. This paper deals with case studies of innovative applications of post tensioning in restoration and rehabilitation of structures and restoration of bridge structure in Andaman & Nicobar Island, India affected by Sumatra quake.展开更多

The phenomenon of empathy has been discussed in philosophy, aesthetics, and psychology for many years. In the beginning of the 20th century, an extensive discussion on this phenomenon has been led by European intuition phenomenologists such as Husserl, Sartre, Brunswik, and Heider, etc. It is known that the theory of its development relates to understanding human feelings and emotions. Empathic design in the design field has developed emotional design, inclusion design and universal design, etc. Empathic design is an emerging issue in the design field. What are empathic design, designing process, design methodologies, and a strategic design model? Why is empathic design important to the creative and designing processes? Empathic design is one of the useful ways to understand interpersonal relationships that might influence the creative and designing processes, design strategies and innovation. Empathic design that emphasizes listening to the voice from customer's heart and designing this into design has been proved to be something the customer really needs in brand communication messages and brand values. This paper researches, investigates and gathers the research methodologies and combines a literature review, case study, structured interviews, and grounded theory. The structured interviews comprise four designers who worked in the brand design department, including two senior designers and two junior designers. Thus, a literature review is conducted in this research to discuss the empathic design model, explore founding theories and then seek to analyze and propose a structured empathic design model. Finally, the research presents an empathic design model to explain several denominations, which are empathic communication, empathic aesthetics, empathic innovation, empathic methodologies, empathic culture and others. The design creation process from abstract ideas to concrete manifestation for reference of design students, design teaching, and design practice.展开更多

The infrastructure improvement project consisted of installing a 27-inch-diameter sanitary sewer main with an invert elevation about 19 ft below existing grade. Groundwater was lowered 12 ft during construction, down to a depth of 23 ft below existing grade. This paper addresses the following key questions regarding settlement and potential structural damage as a result of a temporary drop in groundwater caused by construction dewatering: (1) How could a decrease in groundwater elevation cause settlement? (2) Is this a highly unusual or atypical phenomenon that cannot be explained or estimated using science and engineering techniques available to the engineering profession? (3) Based on the standard of care at the time, should these problems have been anticipated, or at least examined, by the engineering firms engaged on this project? Answers to these questions are addressed herein using results from geotechnical analyses and data obtained from laboratory and in-situ tests.展开更多

The design creation process from abstract ideas to concrete manifestation for reference of design students, design teaching, and design practice.
文摘A homeowner reported extensive settlement damage approximately two weeks after the groundwater in the vicinity of the home was lowered at a nearby construction project. Answers to these questions are addressed herein using results from geotechnical analyses and data obtained from laboratory and in-situ tests.
