Rills are frequently observed on slope farmlands and rill erosion significantly contributes to sediment yields. This paper focuses on reviewing the various factors affecting rill erosion processes and the threshold conditions of rill initiation. Six factors, including rainfall, runoff, soil, topography, vegetation and tillage system, are discussed. Rill initiation and network are explored. Runoff erosivity and soil erodibility are recognized as two direct factors affecting rill erosion and other types of factors may have indirect influences on rill erosion through increasing or decreasing the effects of the direct factors. Certain conditions are necessary for rill initiation and the critical conditions are different with different factors. Future studies should be focused on 1) the dynamic changes of rill networks; 2) the combined effect of multiple factors; and 3) the relationships of threshold values with other related factors. 展开更多

The Jingjiang Reach is experiencing continuous channel degradation owing to operation of the Three Gorges Project (TGP) in 2003. Significant retreat processes at composite riverbanks have occurred at local sites of this reach, which may influence the stability of the fiver regime and the effect of existing river training works. Therefore, bank retreat plays a key role in fluvial processes of the Jingjiang Reach, and it is necessary to predict the long-term processes of bank retreat at typical sections in the reach. In this study, various factors influencing bank retreat in the Jingjiang Reach are investigated, based on bank erosion processes at four sections and the corresponding flow and sediment conditions. It is discovered that fluvial erosion intensity is a dominant factor in controlling the processes of bank retreat in the reach, although other factors, such as bank soil properties, can also influence bank retreat. The bankfull width at a section with severe bank erosion since 2002 is defined as being equal to the sum of the bankfull width in 2002 and the accumulated bank retreat distance after 2002. The magnitude of the bankfull width can be expressed as an exponential function of the previous 5-year average fluvial erosion intensity during flood seasons. The accumulated distances of bank retreat at four sections over the period 2002-2012 are predicted using the proposed empirical relationships, with the calculated bank retreat processes agreeing well with observed data. 展开更多

The impact of vegetation coverage on erosion and sediment yield in the Loess Plateau has been extensively studied, but the research has been primarily based on observations from slope runoff plots or secondary forest regions;the scaling method remains unresolved when it is applied at a large spatial scale, and it is difficult to apply to regions with severe soil and water loss given the predominance of herbs and shrubs. To date, there is little data on the quantitative impact of changes to vegetation on sediment concentration at a large spatial scale. This paper is based on vegetation information from remote sensing images, measured rainfall and sediment data over nearly 60 years, and results from previous runoff and sediment variation research on the Yellow River. We introduce the concepts of a sediment yield coefficient and the percentage of effective vegetation and erodible area, analyze the impact of different vegetation conditions on the flood sediment concentration and sediment yield, and evaluate the effect of rainfall intensity on sediment yield under different vegetation conditions at the watershed scale. We propose models to evaluate the impact of vegetation on sediment yield in the loess gully hilly region, which are based on remote sensing data and support an application at a large spatial scale. The models can be used to assess sediment reduction that results from the current significant improvement of vegetation in the Loess Plateau. 展开更多
