Unfortunately, this type of mechanism is difficult to be reached due to the abundant presence ofinfill wall panels on buildings, which under strong earthquakes show severe cracks and strength degradations, thus complicating the seismic response of buildings. In order to avoid these brittle mechanisms of failure, studies were made toward development of new seismic protection system which would completely protect the infill walls from any cracks and strength degradation manifestations and simultaneously improve the seismic response of the entire structure. Utilization of the "IDRIZI" seismic protection system, would greatly contribute to many important aspects, like the increase of structural seismic performance, drastic reduction of damages under strong earthquake events and avoiding any unpredictable local failure mechanisms on buildings.展开更多

This paper gives you an introduction on current situation of distribution of tropical crop germplasm resources, in-situ conservation, collection and preservation, evaluation and appraisal and innovation and utilization in china; analysis on existing key problems in protection and utilization of China's tropical crop germplasm resources; proposal of complementary study and collection and construction of geographical information base; reasonably layout of plantation and upgrade and preservation of equipments; development and research of related technical standards and carry-out of system evaluation and appraisal; improvement of share mechanism and efficiency; innovation and breakthrough in key points; and talents training and maintenance of work continuance, etc. Basing on these, the proposal of protection and utilization of China's tropical crop germplasm resources are further strengthened.展开更多
The onset of construction and personnel transfers to the islands of Guam and Tinian present a case study in which peacetime military operations threaten conservation of environmental resources. The planning process in...The onset of construction and personnel transfers to the islands of Guam and Tinian present a case study in which peacetime military operations threaten conservation of environmental resources. The planning process indicates land conversion, increased population, and invasive species arriving in the midst of increased imports are among the major impending threats, especially to terrestrial biological resources. We discuss historical events that have marginalized the contributions of local stakeholders, mistake-ridden planning processes revealing inadequate efforts to safeguard the environment, and compelling evidence that predicts a trajectory targeting imminent damage of terrestrial resources. We contend these developments present a case study within the ecological ethics discipline whereby peacetime military operations push conservation of the environment to the sidelines in the name of national defense. We conclude that conservation of environmental resources is not ancillary to national security, it is integral. Wartime military damage to natural resources is unavoidable, therefore, peacetime military operations should embrace conservation priorities to a greater degree.展开更多
