Three main types of information were identified as being utilized by people: passive information (e.g., newspapers, brochures, TV, radio, websites), interactive information (e.g., community activities, school activities~ and workplace activities), and experiential information (e.g., experiencing a hazardous event, responding to an event, and working in an organization that deals with hazards). People tended to either contextualize hazard and preparedness information around any prevailing beliefs they had or form new beliefs on exposure to information. A number of core beliefs were identified as crucial for helping people consider that preparing is important and motivating actual adjustment adoption. Society also has an influence on how people interpret information and form intentions to prepare. People are often influenced by the opinions of others, and as preparing for disasters is not seen as a societal norm, this can cause people not to prepare. Feeling a responsibility for others (e.g., children) appears to be a major driver of preparedness. Other societal factors such as trust, leadership and sense of community also influence interpretation, dissemination and use of hazards and preparedness information. Finally, a number of resource issues can help or hinder preparedness.展开更多

Firstly, mutual information measure is combined with morphological gradient information. The essence of the gradient information is that locations a large gradient magnitude should be aligned, but also the orientation of the gradients at those locations should be similar. Secondly, a hybrid optimizer combined PSO with Powell algorithm is proposed to restrain local maxima of mutual information function and improve the registration accuracy to sub-pixel level. Lastly, muhlresolution data structure based on Mallat decomposition can not only improve the behavior of registration function, but also improve the speed of the algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate that the new method can yield good registration result, superior to traditional optimizer with respect to smoothness and attraction basin as well as convergence speed.展开更多

Therefore information is inseparably connected with matter and energy. The universal measure of information in physical heterogeneity is the Shannon information entropy. An information approach along with a physical one allows to obtain new, sometimes more general data in relation to data obtained on the ground of physical rules only. The results presented in this paper show the effectiveness of informational approach for studying the interactions in the Universe. The paper shows that, along with the physical interactions the gravitational, electromagnetic, strong, weak interactions exists fifth type of fundamental interactions--information interaction, whose magnitude is not dependent on distance. The existence of information interaction is determined by the entanglement of quantum states, of quantum subsystems. The magnitude of information interaction is measured in bits.展开更多

The proposed method applies NCIE to measure the correlation degree between the image intensities of corresponding voxel in the floating and reference images. Registration is achieved by adjustment of the relative position until NCIE between the images is maximized. However, unlike mutual information (MI), NCIE varies in the closed interval [0, 1], and around the extremum it varies sharply, which makes it possible that thresholds of NCIE can be used to boost the search for the registration transformation. Using this feature of NCIE, we combine the downhill simplex searching algorithm to register the ultrasound images. The simulations are conducted to testify the effectiveness and rapidity of the proposed registration method, in which the ultrasound floating images are aligned to the reference images with required registration accuracy. Moreover, the NCIE based method can overcome local minima problem by setting thresholds and can take care of the differences in contrast between the floating and reference images.展开更多

First, the incompatibility of random variables was defined and discussed via the non-positive semi-definiteness of their covariance matrixes. Then, a method was proposed to verify the existence of incompatible probability for variables. A hypothesis testing was also applied to reexamine the likelihood of the observed marginal probabilities being integrated into a joint probability space, thus showing the statistical significance of incompatible probability cases. A case study with user click-through data provided the initial evidence of the incompatible probability in information retrieval (IR), particularly in user interaction. The experiments indicate that both incompatible and compatible cases can be found in IR data, and informational queries are more likely to be compatible than navigational queries. The results inspire new theoretical perspectives of modeling the complex interactions and phenomena in IR.展开更多

However, traditional MHT can not make full use of motion information. In this work,we combine MHT with Interactive Multiple Model (IMM) estimator and feature fusion. New algorithm greatly improves the tracking performance due to the fact that IMM estimator provides better estimation and feature information enhances the accuracy of data association. The new algorithm is tested by tracking tropical fish in fish container. Experimental result shows that this algorithm can significantly reduce tracking lost rate and restrain the noises with higher computational effectiveness when compares with traditional MHT.展开更多

The interactions between two non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and rural beneficiaries in Isinya, Kajiado County, provide case studies of how NGOs modernize their outreach via new media and how beneficiaries respond to the change. The research was not only concerned with the presence of information technology (IT) and online facilities in remote and deprived locations. It also evaluated responses to the replacement of person-to-person contact with technologies, such as social media, the Internet, Compact Disc-Read Only Memory (CD-ROMs), and Digital Versatile Disc (DVDs). Conducted in four focus groups, the research evaluated the uptake of new media technologies by beneficiaries following the transition, asked whether beneficiaries engaged with the materials being communicated, and assessed whether this confluence of technology and culture had eased the flow of communication, or unsettled it. Evidence of discomfort among the older (over 50-year-old) beneficiaries stemmed from fear of failure to master the technologies and a desire for a continuation of regular interpersonal interaction with the NGO field officers (whose field trips were scaled back in preference of computer-mediated communication). However, younger (under 40-year-old) beneficiaries were less insistent on regular interpersonal visits and were appreciative of the use of technology, and of the building of Maarifa Centres to give the beneficiaries free access to internet, DVDs, and hard drive-based information materials. Another demographic, beneficiaries aged between 40 and 50 years old, said they were not comfortable with the change and wanted the interpersonal interaction to continue, but were open to a longer-term transition once the beneficiaries were all conversant with the uses of the new technologies. The study recommends a better managed transition that accommodated the beneficiaries’ fears, misgivings, and cultural preference for verbal, face-to-face consultation.展开更多

Compared with the previous schemes, this scheme is more efficient, since three or four-dimensional quantum states can be transferred with a single step and information interchange of three-dimensional quantum states can be realized, which is a significant improvement. It is based on the resonant interaction of a three-mode cavity field with an atom. As a consequence, the interaction time is shortened greatly. Furthermore, we give some discussions about the feasibility of the scheme.展开更多

Many schemes have been proposed to support the keyword search in a public cloud. However, they have some potential limitations. First, most of the existing schemes only consider the scenario with the single data owner. Second, they need secure channels to guarantee the secure transmission of secret keys from the data owner to data users. Third,in some schemes, the data owner should be online to help data users when data users intend to perform the search, which is inconvenient. In this paper,we propose a novel searchable scheme which supports the multi-owner keyword search without secure channels. More than that, our scheme is a non-interactive solution,in which all the users only need to communicate with the cloud server. Furthermore, the analysis proves that our scheme can guarantee the security even without secure channels. Unlike most existing public key encryption based searchable schemes,we evaluate the performance of our scheme, which shows that our scheme is practical.展开更多

For example, the presence of highly interactive individuals, or hubs, influences the extent and rate of information spread across a network. In a network of interactions, the duration over which individual variation in interactions persists may affect how the network operates. Individuals may persist in their behavior over time and across situations, often referred to as personality. Colonies of social insects are an example of a biological system in which the structure of the coordinated networks of interacting workers may greatly influence information flow within the colony, and therefore its collective behavior. Here I investigate the effects of persistence in walking patterns on interaction networks us- ing computer simulations that are parameterized using observed behavior of harvester ants. I examine how the duration of persis- tence in spatial behavior influences network structure. Furthermore, I explore how spatial features of the environment affect the relationship between persistent behavior and network structure. I show that as persistence increases, the skewness of the weighted degree distribution of the interaction network increases. However, this relationship holds only when ants are confined in a space with boundaries, but not when physical barriers are absent. These findings suggest that the influence of animal personalities on network structure and function depends on the environment in which the animals reside [Current Zoology 61 (1): 98-106, 2015].展开更多
