METHODS: Fifty Hpylori-positive patients and 50 H pylori-negative patients were enrolled in the study. During endoscopy of patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia, two antral and two corpus biopsies were taken for histological examination (Giemsa stain) and for immunohistochemical staining of hMLH1 and hMSH2. RESULTS: The percentage of epithelial cell nuclei that demonstrated positivity for hMLH1 staining was 84.14 ± 7.32% in Hpylori-negative patients, while it was 73.34 ±10.10% in Hpylori-positive patients (P 〈 0.0001). No significant difference was seen between the two groups regarding the percentage of epithelial cell nuclei that demonstrated positivity for hMSH2 staining (81.16±8.32% in H pylori-negative versus 78.24 ± 8.71% in Hpylori-positive patients; P = 0.09). CONCLUSION: This study indicates that Hpylori might promote development of gastric carcinoma at least in part through its ability to affect the DNA MMR system展开更多

Tetraspores of C. ocellatus were treated with different UV-B radiation levels(0,36,72,108,144 and 180 J/m2),and thereafter subjected to PAR,darkness,or red or blue light during a 2-h repair stage, each day for 48 days. The diameters and cellular contents of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimmers(CPDs),chlorophyll a(Chl a),phycoerythrin, and UV-B-absorbing mycosporinelike amino acids(MAAs) contents of the tetraspores were determined. Our results show that low doses of UV-B radiation(36 and 72 J/m 2) promoted the growth of C. ocellatus; however, increased UV-B radiation gradually reduced the C. ocellatus growth(greater than 72 J/m2). The MAAs(palythine and asterina-330) in C. ocellatus were detected and analyzed by LC/MS. Our results suggest that moderate red light could induce the growth of this alga in aquaculture. In addition, photorepair was inhibited by red light,so there may be some other DNA repair mechanism activated by red light. Blue light promoted the activity of DNA photolyase, greatly improving remediation efficiency. Red and blue lights were found to reduce the capacity of C. ocellatus to form MAAs. Therefore,PAR,red light, and blue light play different roles during the repair processes for damage induced by UV-B radiation.展开更多

The SAPIEN 3 is one of the latest balloon-expandable prosthesis. This study aimed to investigate the early clinical outcomes after TAVR using the SAPIEN 3 in nonagenarians. Methods A total of 97 consecutive patients underwent TAVR for severe AS between De- cember 2015 and December 2016. Of these, 85 consecutive patients who underwent TAVR using the SAPIEN 3 were included. According to the age, patients were classified into age 〉 90 years group (17 patients) or age 〈 90 years group (68 patients). The clinical outcomes in- cluding all-cause mortality and composite endpoint of early safety at 30 days were evaluated. Results The Society of Thoracic Surgeons score in age 〉 90 years group was higher than age 〈 90 years group (12.3 ±6.1% vs. 8.5 ± 5.1%, P 〈 0.01). There was no significant difference in 30-day mortality between the two groups. However, the life-threatening bleeding and major vascular complications in age 〉 90 years group were greater than age 〈 90 years group (11.8% vs. 1.5%, P = 0.04 and 11.8% vs. 1.5%, P = 0.04, respectively). The composite endpoint of early safety at 30 days was similar between the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that prior myocardial infarction was an independent predictor of the composite endpoint of early safety (odds ratio: 4.76, 95% confidence interval: 1.02-22.21, P = 0.047). Conclusions The early mortality and safety after TAVR using the SAPIEN 3 in nonagenarians were similar and acceptable despite of higher operative risk.展开更多

Florentine Renaissance depictions of the theme are numerous and varied, traditionally represented as a predella (step) panel and as an altarpiece in dining halls or sacristies of churches and convents. Vasari's Last Supper for the Refectory ofLe Murate (The Walled) in Florence is an unusual depiction of Christ's thanksgiving. This imposing religious structure was painted for a poor Benedictine nunnery's cenacolo (refectory) in Florence. Vasari completed two drawings for the commission in 1546. The drawings and painting reveal how Vasari drew upon the work of his predecessors to create an innovative expression of thanksgiving, betrayal, and departure. This large masterpiece was severely damaged, almost irreparably, by several mishaps and floods in 1583 and 1718 and, more recently, by the major Florentine alluvione (flood) of 1966. In commemoration of the 50th year anniversary of this last catastrophic event, Vasari's Le Mutate Last Supper was carefully and magically restored by a group of masterful technicians, artists, and scientists. Their collaboration and support from the private sector demonstrate the successful bond among art, technology, science, and patronage.展开更多

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and outcomes of this emerging procedure. Methods Fourty VIV procedures were performed in 38 consecutive patients (mean age 70 ± 14 years and mean Logistic EuroScore 23.6 ± 15.5%) with severe aortic (n = 19) or mitral (n = 21) bioprosthetic valve dysfunction between 2014 and 2017. Bioprosthetic failure was secondary to stenosis in 11 (27.5%), regurgitation in 19 (47.5%), and combined in 10 (25.0%) bioprostheses. Clinical, echocardiographic, and procedural profiles were characterized, and the short-term results of the study patients were reported. Results Successful transfemoral (n = 15), trans-subclavian (n = 1), or transapical (n = 3) aortic VIV using either balloon-expandable valves (Edwards Sapien XT, n = 7) or self-expandable valves (Medtronic CoreValve, n = 12); and transapical (n = 21) mitral VIV using either Edwards Sapien XT (n = 15) or me-chanically expandable valves (Boston Scientific Lotus, n = 6) were accomplished in all 40 VIV procedures. Implantation was successful with immediate restoration of satisfactory valve function in all patients. Five patients (13.2%) died at a median follow up of 9.3 months. Most of the 33 patients alive were in good functional status with good prosthetic valve performance. Conclusions Transcatheter VIV implantation is a feasible and safe option for the management of bioprosthetic valve failure. It may offer a less invasive alternative for those high-risk patients needing repeat valve replacement.展开更多

With the development of microarray analysis and the wide use of subtractive hybridization techniques, comparative studies have been carried out with respect to the interstrain differences between H pylori and inter-species differences in the genome of related bacteria. It was found that the core genome of H pylori constitutes 1111 genes that are determinants of the species properties. A great pool of auxiliary genes are mainly from the categories of cag pathogenicity islands, outer membrane proteins, restriction-modification system and hypothetical proteins of unknown function. Persistence of H pylori in the human stomach leads to the diversification of the genome. Comparative genomics suggest that a host jump has occurs from humans to felines. Candidate genes specific for the development of the gastric diseases were identified. With the aid of proteomics, population genetics and other molecular methods, future comparative genomic studies would dramatically promote our understanding of the evolution, pathogenesis and microbiology of Hpylori.展开更多
