Another problem is that the structure is difficult to inspect using conventional methods because of limited accessibility. With fiber Bragg grating (FBG), the problem can potentially be solved in structures with a stiffness mismatch. The model used to represent the problem above is a composite stiffened skin with two loading cases: tensile and three-point bending. Additionally, FBG is used to monitor and characterize the delamination caused by both loading cases. Finite element modeling (FEM) with traction versus separation theory is performed to determine the critical area on the specimen for placement of the FBG before manufacturing and testing. In this research, FBG can successfully monitor and characterize delamination caused by both loading cases in structures that have mismatched stiffnesses. Also, FBG can predict the delamination growth quantitatively. A spectrum graph of the FBG results can be used to replace a conventional mechanical graph for use in structural health monitoring.展开更多

The sensor head was constructed from a compact phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG). The narrow transmission channel of the PS-FBG is highly sensitive to small perturbation, hence suitable to be used in acoustic emission (AE) assessment technique. The progressive failure of THS was tested under transverse loading to experimentally simulate the actual loading in practice. Our experimental tests have demonstrated, in good agreement with the commercial piezoelectric sensors, that the important failures information of the THS was successfully recorded by the simple intensity-type PS-FBG sensor.展开更多

By selecting a highly sensitive structure of the fiber Bragg grating strain sensor, the performances of the sensors with three materials were investigated both numerically and experimentally. The strain sensitivities were 3.76pm/με, 3.02pm/με and 3.03pm/με, respectively. The linearity was better than 0.998. It provides useful information for developing sensors for the marine engineering.展开更多

So impact location is considered as the prime approach for structural health and damage monitoring. In this study, a novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) impact location system based on broadband light source is designed, aiming at the shortcoming of existing location systems based on FBG. An improved localization algorithm based on the time difference of arrival (TDoA) is proposed for impact location. According to this algorithm, the impact position can be accurately predicted without wave velocity. Impact planar location experiments are carried out for verification of the FBG impact location system and algorithm on a 400 mmx400 mmx3 mm aluminum alloy plate. The resulted locating error shows high precision and good stability of the proposed system.展开更多

The LPWG filter, a periodic rectangle-corrugated grating structure, was easily fabricated with soft-lithography technique. At a temperature range from 19~C to 70~C, the fabricated LPWG filter element demonstrated a high temperature sensitivity of about 6.5 nm/~C and a wide linear tunable temperature range of 51℃, so that it can be used as a precise thermometer. Our results are useful for the designs of LPWG filters for the implementation of a wide range of thermo-optic functions.展开更多

The LGG is used extensively for research in aerospace to analyze the effects of high speed impacts on materials. Ideally the measurement should be made close to the center of the impact to minimize corruption of the data from edge effects and survive the impact. We chose to develop a non-contact "pseudo" confocal intensity sensor, which demonstrated resolution comparable with conventional polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) sensors combined with high survivability and low cost. A second sensor was developed based on "fiber Bragg gratings" (FBG) to enable a more detailed analysis of the effects of the impact, although requiring contact with the target the low weight and very small contact area of the FBG had minimal effect on the dynamics of the target. The FBG was mounted either on the surface of the target or tangentially between a fixed location. The output signals from the FBG were interrogated in time by a new method. Measurements were made on carbon fiber composite plates in the LGG and on low velocity impact tests. The particle momentum for the low velocity impact tests was chosen to be similar to that of the particles used in the LGG.展开更多

However, the controlled growth of high-quality 2D ternary materials with good chemical stoichiometry remains challenging, which severely impedes their further development and future device applications. Herein, we synthesize ternary Bi_(2)Te_(2)Se(BTS) flakes with a thickness down to 4 nm and a lateral dimension about 60 μm by an atmospheric-pressure solid source thermal evaporation method on a mica substrate. The phonon vibration and electrical transportation of 2D BTS are respectively investigated by temperature-dependent Raman spectrum and conductivity measurements. Furthermore, the photodetector based on 2D BTS exhibits excellent performance with a high light on/off ratio of 1300(365 nm), a wide spectral response range from 365 to 980 nm, and an ultra-fast response speed up to 2 μs. In addition, its electrical and photoelectric properties can be modulated by the gate voltage, offering an improved infrared responsivity to 2.74 A W^(-1) and an on/off ratio of 2266 under 980 nm. This work introduces an effective approach to obtain 2D BTS flakes and demonstrates their excellent prospects in optoelectronics.展开更多
