A magneto-optical sensor, using a dual quadrature polarimetfic processing scheme, was evaluated for current metering and protection applications in high voltage lines. Sensor calibration and resolution were obtained in different operational conditions using illumination in the 1550-nm band. Results obtained indicated the feasibility of interrogating such sensor via the optical ground wire (OPGW) link installed in standard high power grids. The polarimetric bulk optical current sensor also was theoretically studied, and the effects of different sources of error considering practical deployment were evaluated. In particular, the interference from external magnetic fields in a tree-phase system was analyzed. 展开更多

The measurement of spherical rotor orientation is crucial to the close-loop control of spherical motors. This paper presents a novel method for the measuring of three-degree-of-freedom (DOF) rotor orientation of spherical motors using optical sensors. The spatial orientation of spherical rotor is output in the form of ZXZ Euler angles. Firstly, the structure of the measuring system composed of optical sensors and the patterns on the rotor surface are presented, and the operational principle of recognizing intersection points between the optical ring detectors and the latitude/longitude on the rotor surface is illustrated. The analytical model of input-output characteristic is established for the measuring system of three-DOF rotor orientation. Afterwards, the effect of parameters of the optical ring detectors on the linearity, sensitivity, resolving power and measuring range of the measuring system is analyzed using the analytical model. Finally, the feasibility of the measurement is validated through experiments of prototype measuring system. The analysis is expected to be a basis for the design parameter optimization of the orientation measuring system of a PM spherical motor. 展开更多

A novel light scattering technique for mapping metal surface corrosion is presented and its results on copper exposed to atmosphere are reported. The front end of the instrument is made up of a sensor module comprising a thin beam light emitting diode (LED) illuminating a small spot on the metal surface, and a matched pair of photodetectors, one for capturing the reflected light and the other for sampling the scattered light. The analog photocurrent signals are digitized and processed online by a personal computer (PC) to determine the corrosion factor defined in terms of the two current values. By scanning the sample surface using the light beam and by computing the corrosion factor values simultaneously, a three dimensional graph and a two dimensional contour map are generated in the PC using Matlab tools. The values of the corrosion factor measured in different durations of exposure to atmosphere, which obey a bilogarithmic law, testify to the validity of our mathematical model. 展开更多
