A new regression algorithm of an adaptive reduced relevance vector machine is proposed to estimate the illumination chromaticity of an image for the purpose of color constancy. Within the framework of sparse Bayesian learning, the algorithm extends the relevance vector machine by combining global and local kernels adaptively in the form of multiple kernels, and the improved locality preserving projection (LLP) is then applied to reduce the column dimension of the multiple kernel input matrix to achieve less training time. To estimate the illumination chromaticity, the algorithm is trained by fuzzy central values of chromaticity histograms of a set of images and the corresponding illuminants. Experiments with real images indicate that the proposed algorithm performs better than the support vector machine and the relevance vector machine while requiring less training time than the relevance vector machine. 展开更多

[Objective] This study aimed to identify red pigment of Panax notoginseng fruits and explore the correlation between pigment content and total saponins of the fruits. [Method] The red pigment of Panax notoginseng fruits was preliminarily identi- fied with specific color reactions and UV-vis spectra, and the contents of the pigment and total saponins were determined via spectrophotometry. [Result] The red hues of the fruits were contributed by anthocyanins and/or the anthocyanidins. The contents of anthocyanins and total saponins of the fruits both decreased along with thinning of the red hues. The content difference of the anthocyanins in fruits with different red hues reached extremely significant level, but that of total saponins just reached significant level. [Conclusion] The red pigment of P. notoginseng fruits is anthocyanins which are of extremely significant positive correlation with total saponins in contents. 展开更多

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of light intensity and enhanced nitrogen supply on the growth and photosynthesis of the green-tide macroalga, Ulvaprolifera. Thalli of U. prolifera were grown in natural or NH^-enriched seawater under two different light intensities for 7 days, and then the growth rate, pigmentation, and photosynthetic performance of the thalli were evaluated. The results show that the relative growth rate (RGR) was markedly higher under the high light level than under the low light level. Enrichment with NH~ enhanced the RGR under high light intensity, but did not affect RGR under low light intensity. In low light conditions, NH;-enrichment resulted in a marked decrease in the maximal photosynthetic rate (Pro) and the maximum carbon fixation rate (Vmax), but it did not affect the half saturation constant for carbon (K0.5) or the ratio of Vmax to K0.5, which reflects the carbon acquisition efficiency. In high light conditions, Pm, K05, and the dark respiration rate (Rd) increased under NHI enrichment, but Vmax and the Vmax/Ko5 ratio decreased. Regardless of the light intensity, NH^+4-enrichment did not affect the apparent photosynthetic efficiency (a), which reflects the ability of the alga to use light energy at low light levels. Under both low and high light intensities, the chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b), and carotenoids (Car) contents in thalli were higher in NH1-enriched than in natural seawater, except that there was a decrease in the Chl b content of thalli in NH1-enriched seawater under low light intensity. Therefore, NH^+4 enrichment improved the growth and photosynthetic performance of U. prolifera under high light intensity, but not under low light intensity. We discuss the possible mechanisms underlying these physiological responses. 展开更多

Evidence for the long-term optical curve variability and colour behaviour of the BL Lac object Mkn 421 is presented. Our results show that the amplitude of the optical variations of Mkn 421 is only about △B=4.7 magnitude in the B-band for its photometric history from 1899 to 2002. The results of optical photometric monitoring of the Mkn 421 from April 2000 to Jan 2002 are provided. During our observation, Mkn 421 shows significant rapid variations and exhibits short time variability of 2.42 hours in the B band. A strong correlation between the B - V colour index and the magnitude in the B band is found. Our charge coupled device (CCD) photometry of Mkn 421 shows that the measured results are in good agreement with the predicted optical variability period of about 23 years. 展开更多

AIM: To investigate the hepatoprotective activity of tea polyphenols (TP) and its relation with cytochrome P450 (CYP450) expression in mice. METHODS: Hepatic CYP450 and CYPbs levels were measured by UV-spectrophotometry in mice 2 d after intraperitoneal TP (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg per day). Then the mice were intragastricly pre-treated with TP (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg per day) for six days before paracetamol (1000 mg/kg) was given. Their acute mortality was compared with that of control mice. The mice were pre-treated with TP (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg per day) for five days before paracetamol (500 mg/kg) was given. Hepatic CYP2E1 and CYPIA2 protein and mRNA expression levels were evaluated by Western blotting, immunohistochemical staining and transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: The hepatic CYP450 and CYPb5 levels in mice of TP-treated groups (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg per day) were decreased in a dose-dependent manner compared with those in the negative control mice.TP significantly attenuated the paracetamol-induced hepatic injury and dramatically reduced the mortality of paracetamol-treated mice. Furthermore, TP reduced CYP2E1 and CYPIA2 expression at both protein and mRNA levels in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION: TP possess potential hepatoprotective properties and can suppress CYP450 expression. 展开更多

A single-mode optical fiber with a convex chromatic dispersion profile is proposed for generating a flat supercontinuum(SC).The fiber has normal dispersion and the dispersion parameter D(λ,z) is a convex function of wavelengths.It is shown from the numerical results that the chromatic dispersion,the flatness of the dispersion curve and the pump conditions have significant effect on SC generation.A flat and broad SC without strong residual pump component can be obtained when the pump wavelength is set in the vicinity of the wavelength at which the fiber has small normal group-velocity dispersion(GVD) and small dispersion slope.The fiber with a smaller normal GVD,a flatter dispersion profile and a higher nonlinear coefficient are more suitable for broad SC generation. 展开更多

Preparation of Organic Selenocystine Using Locally Isolated Bread Yeast

In contrast to the toxic inorganic forms of selenium to life at very low concentrations, the organic-selenium compounds are of considerable interest and several of them play essential roles in cell biochemistry and nutritional science. Se-yeast (Selenium-enriched yeast) is a common form of selenium used to supplement dietary intake of this important trace mineral. In the present study, we tried to prepare an organic selenocystine using locally isolated bread yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). A novel locally prepared date extract media enriched by addition of 0.2% KH2PO4 (potassium phosphate), 0.6% ammonium sulfate was adopted as alternative culture media. Differences concentrations of selenium salt (30, 60, 120 and 240 lag/mL) were added to the yeast culture media. While the best concentration of selenium added was 30Bg/mL, it achieved optimal conditions for the growth of yeast and the production of red yeast growth identical to the standard. The products (organic selenocystine) were analyzed by HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) and AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer) comparing with authentic standard obtained from Sigma. Calculations have been performed to investigate the pressure-induced solid-solid phase transitions and the mechanical stability for three zinc-blende II-VI semiconductor compounds: ZnS, ZnSe, ZnTe by ab initio plane-wave pseudopotential density functional theory (DFT). Using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for exchange and correlation in the scheme of Perdew-Wang 1991 (P Wgl ), the ground state properties and equation of state are obtained, which are well consistent with the experimental data available and other calculations. On the basis of the forth-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of states, the transition pressures Pt are determined through the analysis of enthalpy variation with pressure. A linear-response approach is used to calculate the frequencies of the phonon dispersion. Finally, by the calculations of phonon frequencies, some thermodynamic properties such as the vibrational contribution to the Helmholtz free energy (F), enthedpy (H), entropy (S), and the heat capacity (Cv ) are also successfully obtained. 展开更多
