Social Media Use for Information-Sharing Activities Among Youth in Malaysia

Social media are popular among youth for sharing information. This study tries to explore the popularity of the social media sites, the level of use of the social media sites, the types of information-sharing activities involved on the social media sites, to compare youth of various background in relation to information-sharing activities, and to analyze the relationship between the level of social media use and the information-sharing activities among youth. This study employs a quantitative research design, using survey method with questionnaire as the research instrument used for data collection. In this study, youth aged between 17-40 years old nationwide were surveyed. The study was developed based on the user and gratification theory (Blumler & Katz, 1974). Findings showed that youth always (five to seven days per week) use social media to share information including personal information. Results also showed that youth used the social media more for sharing negatively-oriented information compared to the positively-oriented information. Although there were more items on the positively-oriented information-sharing activities but more youth spent their time on the negatively-oriented information-sharing activities. The results are supported by a strong relationship between frequency of use and the negatively-oriented information-sharing activities. 展开更多

Wavelength Converter Information Sharing in GMPLS Controlled Optical Networks

Wavelength converters are used in optical networks to overcome transparent wavelength channel insufficiency. However, current GMPLS control plane does not distribute wavelength con- verter information to network nodes. To overcome this situation, four wavelength converter information sharing methods for GMPLS-controUed optical networks are proposed. The first two, Conversion Capability during Signaling (CCS) and Conversion Availability during Signaling (CAS), are based on the RSVP-TE signaling protocol, while the others, Conversion Capability Advertisement (CCA) and Conversion Availability Advertisement ( CAA ) , are based on the OSPF-TE routing protocol. Simulations show that CAA obtains the lowest blocking, while CCS the highest. Moreover, CAA only slightly increases the control plane load compared to CAS. 展开更多

Exploration of unpredictable environments by networked groups

Information sharing is a critical task for group-living animals. The pattern of sharing can be modeled as a network whose structure can affect the decision-making performance of individual members as well as that of the group as a whole. A fully connected network, in which each member can directly transfer information to all other members, ensures rapid sharing of important information, such as a promising foraging location. However, it can also impose costs by amplifying the spread of inaccur- ate information (if, for example the foraging location is actually not profitable). Thus, an optimal net- work structure should balance effective sharing of current knowledge with opportunities to discover new information. We used a computer simulation to measure how well groups characterized by dif- ferent network structures (fully connected, small world, lattice, and random) find and exploit resource peaks in a variable environment. We found that a fully connected network outperformed other struc- tures when resource quality was predictable. When resource quality showed random variation, however, the small world network was better than the fully connected one at avoiding extremely poor outcomes. These results suggest that animal groups may benefit by adjusting their informa- tion-sharing network structures depending on the noisiness of their environment. 展开更多
