In this study, the Brazilian students helped their foreign partners with Portuguese learning and were helped by them in the English learning. The participants used a synchronous computer software called Openmeetings and also an electronic dictionary as a complementary tool. Adopting a qualitative perspective in the data collection and analysis, this case study was conducted in the second semester of 2010. The data were collected by means of conversation sessions through Openmeetings and were analyzed in the light of studies on sociocultural theory as well as on tandem/teletandem language learning researches. The data analyses showed that the participants used English as an anchoring language to work with Portuguese and English itself, and German was introduced in the teletandem sessions. The data also showed that the whiteboard and the electronic dictionary were used as complementary resources to the use of audio and video for the language learning process the participants engaged in.展开更多

The buildup type curves or buildup behavior could be obtained through the solution by using su-perposition. But a new outer boundary condition for variable pressure boundary must be introduced to obtain the correct pressure buildup solutions by superposition. A technique is shown to determine the deviation time from the infinite-acting semilog radial flow stabilization in the derivatives of pressure, which is calculated with respect to and plotted vs. shut-in time. Field examples are given to illustrate the use of the proposed method for analyzing transient pressure data from a well located in a multi-well water-injection reservoir. An adaptive genetic algorithm-based method is used to match the pressure and pressure derivative data to estimate reservoir parameters. The validity and applicability of the proposed method are also demonstrated through the examples.展开更多

The implemented model computes the energy balance in the hot water storage tank in each time step along a simulation interval. Its input data are values from a typical meteorological year of a chosen location and the hot water load. The system components are the hot water storage tank and the solar collector. Firstly, the validation of the model is presented and then four solar water heating systems are simulated in four different cities along one year. The storage tank water hourly temperatures were obtained for a typical meteorological year and those values were compared with the values obtained by the widespread TRNSYS simulation software. The results obtained from this comparison were satisfactory.展开更多

Guppies are a classic model for sensory drive as mate preferences based on coloration differ across individuals and populations. A large body of work has identified variation in color vision, yet we lack a dir ect tie between how such variation in color vision influences variation in color preference. Here we bring together studies that have investigated guppy vision over the past 40years to: (1) highlight our current understanding of where variation occurs in the guppy color vision pathway and (2) suggest future ave nues of research into sources of visual system variation that could influence guppy color preference. This will allow researchers to design careful studies that couple measures of color preference with measures of visual system variation from the same individual or population. Such studies will finally provide im portant answers as to what sets the direction and speed of mate preference evolution via sensory drive.展开更多

These components of the buildings envelope have very complex behaviour because they are the seat of various coupled heat transfers modes and are subjected to the random variations of the meteorological parameters. Using the finite difference method (FDM) and starting from experimental results recorded during several years, a simulation model was developed and validated concerning the "composite" Trombe wall. In order to make this work more accessible to the community of the heat engineers, it appears interesting to build a simulation model which can be integrated into the library of elements of the TRNSYS software. A "Type" was thus carried out and the results obtained compared with those of the FDM model. In this work we compare the obtained results with these two numerical ways. The assumptions and the results of simulations are also confronted with those of an existing module in TRNSYS (Type 36) established for the "classical" Trombe wall. The study shows that the models that we developed are very precise and that certain assumptions must be used with a lot of precautions. The advantages of the composite Trombe solar wall compared to the Classical Trombe wall are highlighted for cold and/or cloudy climates.展开更多

The weight function ω(t; a) under consideration includes the two weight functions from Huˇskov′a and Meintanis(2006) plus the weight function used by Matteson and James(2014),where a is a tuning parameter. Under the local alternative hypothesis, we establish the consistency, convergence rate, and asymptotic distribution of this change point estimator which is the maxima of a two-side Brownian motion with a drift. Since the performance of the change point estimator depends on a in use, we thus propose an algorithm for choosing an appropriate value of a, denoted by a_s which is also justified. Our simulation study shows that the change point estimate obtained by using a_s has a satisfactory performance. We also apply our method to a real dataset.展开更多

As the first Protestant missionary to China, Robert Morrison endeavored to learn the Chinese language and to collect local cultural information, so as to encyclopedically present his knowledge of Chinese through the language reference books he compiled. This paper examines the range of linguistic registers of the represented examples from Morrison's dictionaries, so as to discuss the way in which various registers are combined into the text and how they are related with different social arenas. Placing Morrison's works in a wider social and intellectual context, this paper also discusses issues of cultural exchange between China and early nineteenth-century Europe.展开更多
