The following st...Previous studies have shown that children learn from educational television; however, these studies have not explored how closely the educational content of the program is integrated to the narrative. The following study uses a systematic content analysis of 100 top-rated U.S. children's television programs to explore the tangential relationship (i.e., distance) of narrative and educational content through the lens of the capacity model--which is built upon three basic components: narrative content, educational content, and the distance between them. Programs were analyzed for distance by examining lesson clarity and integration, show type, target audience age, and station type. One-way ANOVAs indicates significant differences between the means of these variables. Programs targeting younger children presented educational content that was closely integrated into the plotline of the program and helped further the story. However, as the target audience aged, the educational content became more tangential to the narrative content and was less tied to the plotline of the program.展开更多
A new approach,gate-capacitance-shift (GCS) approach,is described for compact modeling.This approach is piecewise for various physical effects and comprises the gate-bias-dependent nature of corrections in the nanosca...A new approach,gate-capacitance-shift (GCS) approach,is described for compact modeling.This approach is piecewise for various physical effects and comprises the gate-bias-dependent nature of corrections in the nanoscale regime.Additionally,an approximate-analytical solution to the quantum mechanical (QM) effects in polysilicon (poly)-gates is obtained based on the density gradient model.It is then combined with the GCS approach to develop a compact model for these effects.The model results tally well with numerical simulation.Both the model results and simulation results indicate that the QM effects in poly-gates of nanoscale MOSFETs are non-negligible and have an opposite influence on the device characteristics as the poly-depletion (PD) effects do.展开更多
In order to research the characteristic and mechanism of fracture of rock-like materials,the morphology of rock fracture surface under the breakages of uniaxial compression and triaxial compression was observed and me...In order to research the characteristic and mechanism of fracture of rock-like materials,the morphology of rock fracture surface under the breakages of uniaxial compression and triaxial compression was observed and measured by means of a new-type 3D laser scanning system.Based on geographic information system(GIS)technique,the fracture surfaces were 3D visualized and reestablished.According to GIS 3D statistics,the geometrical characteristics of fracture surfaces under different breakage conditions were analyzed,and then based on fractal theory,the change laws of fractal dimension of fracture surfaces were discussed under the conditions of different cell pressures and initial water contents of rock.Furthermore,the relationships between characteristics of fracture surface and mechanical properties of rock were discussed.The results indicate that cell pressure,initial water content,and mechanical parameters of rock are the important factors to influence on the geometrical characteristics of fracture surface.The research provides a new experimental method for quantitative study on the fracture characteristics of various materials under different breakage conditions.展开更多

Although evolving transmission techniques are...The growing number of mobile users, as well as the diversification in types of services have resulted in increasing demands for wireless network bandwidth in recent years. Although evolving transmission techniques are able to enlarge the network capacity to some degree, they still cannot satisfy the requirements of mobile users. Meanwhile, following Moore's Law, the data processing capabilities of mobile user terminals are continuously improving. In this paper, we explore possible methods of trading strong computational power at wireless terminals for transmission efficiency of communications. Taking the specific scenario of wireless video conversation, we propose a model-based video coding scheme by learning the structures in multimedia contents. Benefiting from both strong computing capability and pre-learned model priors, only low-dimensional parameters need to be transmitted; and the intact multimedia contents can also be reconstructed at the receivers in real-time. Experiment results indicate that, compared to conventional video codecs, the proposed scheme significantly reduces the data rate with the aid of computational capability at wireless terminals.展开更多

A PETN (pentaerythritol tetranitrate) pellet of 1.4 g near the model wall was detonated on a steel plate. A water-filled container was placed between the explosive and the wall. The pressure histories at six points, which corresponded to Hopkinson scaled distance of from 3.6 m·kg^-1/3 to 21.7 m·kg^-1/3 were evaluated along with dependence of mitigation effects on the amount of water and the position of the container. The presence of the water and the wall mitigated the peak overpressure near the explosion points and the positive impulse along all points. The mitigation effect was equivalent to 20-30% reduction of explosive weight based on discussion of the equivalent ratio. The presence of the water along the wall (not very close to the explosive) also mitigated the blast pressure.展开更多
