A cellular automaton(CA) modeling of discontinuous dynamic recrystallization(DDRX) of a near-α Ti-6Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V(TA15) isothermally compressed in the β single phase field was presented.In the CA model,nucleation of the β-DDRX and the growth of recrystallized grains(re-grains) were considered and visibly simulated by the CA model.The driving force of re-grain growth was provided by dislocation density accumulating around the grain boundaries.To verify the CA model,the predicted flow stress by the CA model was compared with the experimental data.The comparison showed that the average relative errors were10.2%,10.1%and 6%,respectively,at 1.0,0.1 and 0.01 s^-1 of 1020 ℃,and were 10.2%,11.35%and 7.5%,respectively,at 1.0,0.1and 0.01 s^-1 of 1050 ℃.The CA model was further applied to predicting the average growth rate,average re-grain size and recrystallization kinetics.The simulated results showed that the average growth rate increases with the increasing strain rate or temperature,while the re-grain size increases with the decreasing strain rate;the volume fraction of recrystallization decreases with the increasing strain rate or decreasing temperature. 展开更多

Commercial purity and high purity titanium sheets were initially strained by a new technique, named as friction roll surface processing (FRSP). Severe strain was imposed into the surface layer and strain gradient was formed through the thickness of the sheet. The microstructure and texture in as-strained state were investigated by optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction technique On the surface of the sheets, ultra-fine grains were found to have a sharp texture with a preferred orientation strongly related to the FRSP direction. The evolution of microstructure and crystallographic texture of FRSPed samples during recrystallization were also studied by electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) technique after being annealed at selected temperatures and time. The results indicated that the preferred orientations resulting from FRSP and annealing in the surface layer were formed during rolling and its recrystallization textures were reduced by FRSP. In addition, the texture evolved stably without change in main components during the annealing. 展开更多

A series of Co-Sn alloys with Sn content ranging from 12% to 32%(mole fraction) were undercooled to different degrees below the equilibrium liquidus temperature and the solidification behaviors were investigated by monitoring the temperature recalescence and examing the solidification microstructures.A boundary clearly exists,which separates the coupled growth zone from the decoupled growth zone of eutectic phases for the alloys with Sn content ranging from 14% to 31%(mole fraction).The other Co-Sn alloys out of this content range are hard to be undercooled into the coupled growth zone in the experiment.It is found that the so-called non-reciprocal nucleation phenomenon does not happen in the solidification of undercooled Co-Sn off-eutectic alloys. 展开更多

Hot deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of hot isostatically pressed FGH96 P/M superalloy were studied using isothermal compression tests. The tests were performed on a Gleeble-1500 simulator in a temperature range of 1000-1150 °C and strain rate of 0.001-1.0 s-1, respectively. By regression analysis of the stress—strain data, the constitutive equation for FGH96 superalloy was developed in the form of hyperbolic sine function with hot activation energy of 693.21 kJ/mol. By investigating the deformation microstructure, it is found that partial and full dynamical recrystallization occurs in specimens deformed below and above 1100 °C, respectively, and dynamical recrystallization (DRX) happens more readily with decreasing strain rate and increasing deformation temperature. Finally, equations representing the kinetics of DRX and grain size evolution were established. 展开更多

The flow behavior and microstructure evolution of AZ91 magnesium alloy during a thermomechanical process, hot compression test, was investigated. The specimens were hot compressed at a temperature ranging from 350 ℃ to 425 ℃ and at strain rate of 0.1 s-1 to the strains of 0.3, 0.5 and peak. Microstructural evolutions were studied using optical and scanning electron microscopes. The results show that during the compression process, the recrystallized grains nucleate along the pre-existing grain boundaries. The amount of dynamically recrystallized grains is increased with strain in a sigmoid scheme followed by Avrami equation. The size of dynamically recrystallized grains also increases at the beginning and decreases after reaching the maximum value. 展开更多

To deeply understand and even describe the evolutions of the low-energy twin boundary density(BLDΣ3n)in a thermal-plastic deformation process,an improved twin density model as a function of average grain size and stored energy is developed.For Nimonic 80A superalloy,the model is solved based on the EBSD statistical results of grain size and BLDΣ3n in the specimens compressed at temperatures of 1273−1423 K and strain rates of 0.001−10 s−1.The corresponding relationships of BLDΣ3n with stored energy and grain size varying with temperature and strain rate are clarified by the superimposed contour plot maps.It is summarized that BLDΣ3n increases with increasing stored energy and decreasing grain size,and higher BLDΣ3n with finer grains corresponds with lower temperatures and higher strain rates.Such relationships are described by the improved twin density model,and the prediction tolerance of the solved model is limited in 2.8%. 展开更多

Hot compression of 7050 aluminum alloy was performed on Gleeble 1500D thermo-mechanical simulator at 350 ℃ and 450 ℃ with a constant strain rate of 0.1 s-1 to different nominal strains of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.7. Microstructures of 7050 alloy under various compression conditions were observed by TEM to investigate the microstructure evolution process of the alloy deformed at various temperatures. The microstructure evolves from dislocation tangles to cell structure and subgrain structure when being deformed at 350 ℃, of which dynamic recovery is the softening mechanism. However, continuous dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurs during hot deformation at 450 ℃, in which the main nucleation mechanisms of DRX are subgrain growth and subgrain coalescence rather than particle-simulated nucleation (PSN). 展开更多

Cellular automata (CA) algorithm has become an effective tool to simulate microstructure evolution. This paper presents a review on CA modeling of microstructural evolution, such as grain coarsening, recrystallization and phase transformation during metal forming process which significantly affects mechanical properties of final products. CA modeling of grain boundary motion is illustrated and several aspects of recrystallization are described, e.g. nucleation and growth, the development of static and dynamic recrystallization. For phase transformation, attention is paid to such key factors as solute element diffusion and change of systemic chemical free energy. In view of the reviewed works, several open questions in the field of further development of CA simulation are put forward and recommendations to them are given. 展开更多
