The semi-solid microstructure evolution of the billet during reheating was investigated. The results indicate that there are three stages during reheating to semi-solid state: the dissolution of Mg17Al12 and diffusion of Al into α-Mg matrix, the melting of the region with high content of solute and formation of isolated solid particles, and spheroidization and growth of solid particles. Meanwhile, a number of entrapped liquid droplets form within solid particles. In addition, the number and size of entrapped liquid droplets rely on the holding time in the semi-solid temperature range. With increasing isothermal holding time, the solid fraction remains unchanged when the solid-liquid system reaches the dynamic equilibrium at last, while the solid particles become more globular and the average size of solid particles increases owing to the decreasing of interfacial energy and the effect of interfacial tension.展开更多

The results show that the precipitates of fine-grained Al-Cu-Mg alloy during rapid cold punching and recrystallization annealing mainly consist of S phase and a small amount of coarse Al6Mn phase. With the increase of deformation passes, the density of precipitates increases, the size of precipitates decreases significantly, and the deformation and transition bands disappear gradually. In addition, the grains are refined and tend to be uniform. Defects introduced by rapid cold punching contribute to the precipitation and recrystallization, and promote nucleation and growth of S phase and recrystallization. Deformation and transition bands in the coarse grains transform into deformation-induced grain boundary during the deformation and recrystallization, which refine grains, obtain uniform nanocrystalline structure and promote homogeneous distribution of S phase.展开更多

The specimens were hot compressed at a temperature ranging from 350 ℃ to 425 ℃ and at strain rate of 0.1 s-1 to the strains of 0.3, 0.5 and peak. Microstructural evolutions were studied using optical and scanning electron microscopes. The results show that during the compression process, the recrystallized grains nucleate along the pre-existing grain boundaries. The amount of dynamically recrystallized grains is increased with strain in a sigmoid scheme followed by Avrami equation. The size of dynamically recrystallized grains also increases at the beginning and decreases after reaching the maximum value.展开更多

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) measurement and microanalysis were adopted in order to understand the microstructure evolution and deformation behavior of the as-cast NiTi SMA under compression at various strain rates and temperatures. The microstructures of as-cast NiTi SMA composed of dendritic grains and equiaxed grains are inhomogeneous and show segregation. The as-cast NiTi SMA consists of B19′ martensite, B2 austenite and Ti2Ni phase simultaneously at room temperature. The as-cast NiTi SMA is sensitive to strain rate under compression at high temperature, at which NiTi SMA is characterized by dynamic recrystallization at strain rates of 0.1 and 0.01 s-1, but by dynamic recovery at strain rate of 0.001s-1. The strain rates have little influence on the true stress—strain curves as well as microstructure of NiTi SMA at room temperature and -100 °C.展开更多

The average aspect(length-to-width) ratio, average area and size of the grains at different heat treatment temperatures and holding time were analyzed and the effects of deformation and annealing time on the grain area and size were considered. It was found that the grain size was strongly influenced by the height reduction and holding time. Grain growth was significant when annealing time increased from 10 min to 2 h at 950 °C and height reduction of 30%; however, grain growth was minimal at annealing time between 2 and 4 h. Many dispersion particles were observed to form in continuous chains; the precipitation location was confirmed to be along initial grain boundaries, and the dispersion particles were identified to be Ti5 Si3 phase by TEM.展开更多

Annealing at 450 °C led to precipitation of coherent Al3Zr phase and a simultaneous co-precipitation of Mn-richα-Al(Mn,Fe)Si phase. Severe plastic deformation by equal channel angular pressing resulted in the grain refinement and increase of microhardness. Observation by electron back-scatter diffraction and in-situ transmission electron microscopy revealed influence of pre-annealing on microstructure changes during post-deformation heat treatment. Dislocation recovery and precipitation ofα-Al(Mn,Fe)Si particles preceded recrystallization at 450 °C in material which was not annealed before deformation. The pre-deformation annealing enabled dynamic recovery during deformation as it depleted the solid solution from Mn atoms. Recrystallization was enhanced by Al3Zr precipitates.展开更多
