Given that there is a dramatic increase of the English manuscript submission rate of doctoral students, yet little research effort is devoted to this line, the author investigates the manuscript drafting strategies of...Given that there is a dramatic increase of the English manuscript submission rate of doctoral students, yet little research effort is devoted to this line, the author investigates the manuscript drafting strategies of one Taiwan Residents hydraulics major doctoral student, who was required by his department to have international publications for the qualifications for the degree. The study employs Ken Hyland＇s social constructionist approach to disciplinary writing and follows an ethnographic research method for the collection/analysis of the data. The results show that the participating student, in order to establish a professional persona for the heightening of manuscript acceptance possibility, followed some prescribed procedures such as citing higher potential journals, adhering to the expert model, and formulizing the research procedures/results. A conflicting rhetorical structure of literature review writing and the favor of doing applied research for publication purpose were also found in his writing. The author addresses the implicated meanings of these writing attempts and concludes that a ＂short-sighted operation＂ of writing attempts may undermine the value of a research. This study contributes to international scientific research communities＇ understanding of this group of writers＇ disciplinary knowledge construction and writing for publication.展开更多
Environmental writing has attained a new relevance in the 21st century. In the present scenario, environmental writing becomes a social discourse. This is the result of a new, vibrant and growing environmental constit...Environmental writing has attained a new relevance in the 21st century. In the present scenario, environmental writing becomes a social discourse. This is the result of a new, vibrant and growing environmental constituency in societies such as Brazil, India, Thailand and other Third World Countries. The features of environmental writing include a visible concern for social justice, defence of livelihood and the determining part played by women. This new discourse has emerged with a new focus on redefinition of terms like human rights, common good, democracy and CPRs （common property resources）. Environmental Writing becomes a powerful discourse when it protests against the increasingly intrusive and interventionist developmental projects, implemented by the government, which in turn assert dominion over indigenous people of the land. There is also a strong emphasis on prudence among the poor as contrasted to the ecological profligacy of the rich. This paper is an attempt to examine the voices of dissent and the accountability of postmodern writers and environmental activists in India regarding environmental issues in India.展开更多

In the 1930s and 1940s,foreign writers gathered in Yan’an drew the curtain back on recognition of China’s international image through their writings on the“red Mecca.”The international perspective on the image of ...In the 1930s and 1940s,foreign writers gathered in Yan’an drew the curtain back on recognition of China’s international image through their writings on the“red Mecca.”The international perspective on the image of Yan’an was shaped by the combined efforts of Yan’an writings by foreign writers and journalists in the interlocking cultural context of history and society.With revolutionary individual consciousness and high artistic creativity,the Yan’an narration of foreign writers had striking shared characteristics:a real sense of presence and a realistic significance beyond their times.Their discovery of the revolutionary power generated by the Chinese people and their calling for and shaping of“heroes of the masses”and their pursuit of“the character of the people”represented the spiritual dimension of their Yan’an writings,a dimension that was distinct from that of local writers.The foreign writers’creative practice and the creative experience of local writers refracted off each other,juxtaposing mirror images of Yan’an at home and abroad and promoting the modernity and cosmopolitanism of Yan’an literature in the intertextuality between reality and literature.Together with local writers,writers from abroad participated in the creation of Chinese revolutionary history and culture,bringing their personal discourse into the discourse of China’s new era and completing the restatement of their cultural identity.The global identity of Yan’an went through a difficult process of historical self-creation,breaking through the limitations of its international image and realizing the self-proving nature of modern Chinese history.展开更多
