As indicated by a survey of 105 villages in 19 provinces and cities, the 2008 international financial crisis had a serious impact on migrant workers' employment, which is prominently manifested in their earlier return to their hometowns, the dismissal of 20 percent of migrant workers from their jobs and a considerable decline in their wages. Thanks to a series of policies the state adopted to ensure growth and expand consumption, migrant workers soon got re-employed. However, some deep-rooted problems surrounding the issue of migrant workers' empoyment came to light as a result of this crisis. These problems need to be solved on an urgent basis, though it will involve a considerable amount of hard work over an extended period of time. While this will require a combination of transitional measures and long-range strategies, the employment of migrant workers should also be incorporated as a fundamental part of the undertaking to ensure economic growth, adjusting the industrial structure, transforming the development mode and pushing forward with the reform. 展开更多

At present, Chinese society is from traditional society to modern society in transition to accelerate, in the social, political, and economic structure, great changes have taken place; due to strong liquidity, migrant workers' groups in social security, are still in the stage of development, and there are still a lot of problems, especially the problem of endowment insurance. Although local governments develop the old-age insurance of migrant workers with their own characteristics, and have their respective advantages, but the effect is not ideal, as follows: "one low and one high", namely the migrant workers' participation rate was low and the insurance of migrant workers was "high rate of surrender". The reason is both within the Chinese social transformation factors, and external economic globalization competition; both obiectively, government policy implementation is not in place, and subjectively, migrant workers lack insured willing. 展开更多

This study draws on a survey of migrants in 12 cities across four major urbanizing areas in China and investigates the structure of migrant worker families'urban and rural consumption. The results show that the structure of migrant worker families' consumption has been dominated by survival consumption. These families tend to live frugally in cities while engaging in conspicuous consumption in their rural hometowns. The structure of migrant worker families'consumption is mainly shaped by their income stability and wealth levels rather than their current income level. Moreover, migrant worker families with high educational levels and those who intend to settle permanently in cities are likely to allocate substantial expenditure to status and hedonic consumption and to upgrade their urban consumption structure. 展开更多

This article uses the age-structure/life-cycle method to analyze the impact of migrant workers’ employment on their urbanization. Since enterprises tend to employ younger workers and unemployed migrant workers tend to be middle-aged, we first apply the age structure/life cycle model to carry out our estimations, pointing out that in order to complete the urbanization of their families, migrant worker couples usually have to work for thirty years consecutively after marriage. On this basis, the article constructs a working life table for migrant workers and uses it to estimate the total quantity of Chinese migrant workers who have the minimum economic capacity required for urbanization. Taking into consideration future changes in the age structure of enterprise employment, we estimate that over the sixty-nine million migrant workers who were under thirty years old in 2006, together with their families, would already be in possession of the minimum economic conditions for settling in urban areas. 展开更多

Based on a study oftbe empirical research literature, this paper presents us with a panoramic picture of migrant workers in China covering their numbers, their structural distribution, their contribution to labor export areas and their impact on labor import areas. Within the total analysis, attention should be paid to the different statistical specifications used in different surveys to estimate the size of the rural migrant population. What is noteworthy is that the number of rural migrant workers has reached 130 million according to the latest agricultural census. The non-working population migrating with migrant workers are not counted in such data. Those who migrate to seek work or run a business are mainly young people with an educational background of junior high school; they are mainly employed in manufacturing, construction and service industries. A large proportion of them have traveled a long distance. Studies have shown that the structural transformation of employment brought about by the cross-regional migration of rural migrant workers has made a huge contribution (estimated at around 20%) to China's economic growth. While such migrations have positive effects on labor export areas overall, particularly in terms of income, they also have left behind a large population of uncared-for children and old people. 展开更多
