Recent tsunamis have resulted in extensive damage of coastal structures. Such scenarios are the result of the action of long waves on structures. In this paper, the efficiency of vegetation as a buffer system in attenuating the incident ocean waves was studied through a well controlled experimental program. The study focused on the measurement of forces resulting from cnoidal waves on a model building mounted over a slope in the presence and absence of vegetation. The vegetative parameters, along with the width of the green belt, its position from the reference line, the diameter of the individual stems as well as the spacing between them, and their rigidity are varied so as to obtain a holistic view of the wave-vegetation interaction problem. The effect of vegetation on variations of dimensional forces with a Keulegan-Carpenter number (KC) was discussed in this paper. It has been shown that when vegetal patches are present in front of structure, the forces could be limited to within F*≤I, by a percentile of 92%, 90%, 55%, and 96%, respectively for gap ratios of 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5. The force is at its maximum for the gap ratio of 1.0 and beyond which the forces start to diminish.展开更多

In the shearing experiment, a load cell and a high speed camera were used for investigating the shearing load response and the deformation behavior of the worksheet. It was found that the mechanical parameters, i.e., the punch-die clearance and the feed velocity of the punch, affected the shearing load response, the cracks initiation behavior and the separation capability of the worksheet. Additionally, a FEM (finite element method) analysis simulating a two dimensional shearing deformation was carried out in order to investigate the influence of punch-die clearance on the failure patterns. Through this simulation, it was revealed that the punch-die clearance remarkably affected the tensile state of stress concentrated in the sheared zone and the crack initiation behavior of the worksheet.展开更多

To defeat this attack, many protection methods are proposed in recent years. However, most of these existing methods focus on user-level heap overflow detection. Only a few methods are proposed for kernel heap protection. Moreover, all these kernel protection methods need modifying the existing OS kernel so that they may not be adopted in practice. To address this problem,we propose a lightweight virtualization-based solution that can protect the kernel heap buffers allocated for the target kernel modules. The key idea of our approach is to combine the static binary analysis and virtualization technology to trap a memory allocation operation of the target kernel module, and then add one secure canary word to the end of the allocated buffer. After that,a monitor process is launched to check the integrity of the canaries. The evaluations show that our system can detect kernel heap overflow attacks effectively with minimal performance cost.展开更多

Understanding global maritime network dynamics is an initial and critical step in this investigation. This study proposes an automatic identification system(AIS)-based approach to understanding maritime network dynamics before and after international events. In this approach, a spatiotemporal modeling method is introduced to measure the similarity in shipping trends before and after international events. Then, a spatiotemporal analytic framework is proposed to understand the maritime network dynamics by grouping similar situation, and assessing possible indirect effects within a network. Finally, three case studies of international events, military conflict, lifted economic sanctions, and government elections, were used to investigate the observed network dynamics possibly affected by international events. The results indicate that container, tanker, and bulk shipping between India and its connected countries all declined more than 69% after military conflicts between India and Pakistan in August 2015. Tanker shipping between Iran and the United Arab Emirates increased 51% after economic sanctions on Iran were lifted. Container shipping between Sri Lanka and Singapore, Malaysia, and India increased more than 74% after the general election in Sri Lanka. These investigations demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach in assessing the possible effects of international events on maritime network dynamics.展开更多

The shock wave experiments were carried out at pressure range between 11 and 42 GPa. Shock data on olivine sample yielded a linear relationship between shock wave velocity D and particle velocity u described by D=3.56(?0.13)+2.57(?0.12)u. The shock temperature is determined by an energy relationship which is approximately 790°C at pressure 28 GPa. Due to low temperature and short experimental duration, we suggest that no phase change occurred in our sample below 30 GPa and olivine persisted well beyond its equilibrium boundary in metastable phase. The densities of metastable olivine are in agreement with the results of static compression. At the depth shallower than 410 km, the densities of metastable olivine are higher than those of the PREM model, facilitating cold slab to sink into the mantle transition zone. However, in entire mantle transition zone, the shock densities are lower than those of the PREM model, hampering cold slab to flow across the "660 km" phase boundary.展开更多
