Regional land use changes are an important part of global changes.The research on land use changes in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area of China attracts a lot of attention owing to the Three Gorges Dam building.The Three Gorges Reservoir Area becomes one of the important research areas.This study analyzed the transforming processes and traits of each land use type and the regional differences of land use changes during the past 30 years,summarized the distribution of different land use types in different buffer zones and regresses the equation areas and different buffer distances based on buffer analyses and regression analyses,and then analyzed the transforming rules in different buffer distances,got the optimal influence distances.The research results indicate that,(1) cultivated land lies at the northwest of the reservoir and was decreasing,however,the construction land was increasing,especially the urban construction land,a large number of land was flooded because of the reservoir water level rise;(2) urban area was sprawling quickly in developed and neighboring areas,and a great deal of cultivated land and a considerable amount of grassland were occupied;in the earlier time,rural settlements occupied lots of cultivated land and a sum of forestry land in the later time;(3) the optimum influenced distances for cultivated land and forestry land were 10-35 km,and for urban and rural settlements were in 5-20 km.Overall,this research can reflect the spatial-temporal characteristics of land use changes during the 30 years,and it is helpful for urban planning and land use planning in the reservoir area. 展开更多

We numerically study the propagation, reflection and collision of soliton-like pulses in the vertical granular chain under gravity. For the pure granular chain system, during the propagation and reflection processes at the fixed end, it behaves like a particle. When it is reflected at the free end, it behaves as neither particle-like nor wave-like. When the strengths of the two colliding soliton-like pulses are close, they collide just like particles. When their strengths are greatly different, they collide just like waves. For the soliton behavior in the collision process, from particle-like to wave-like, there is a critical value for the ratio of the strengths of the two initial pulses. For the two-layer granular chain, if the mass of the grains in the second layer is less than that in the first layer, the soliton-like pulse in the first layer usually excites about soliton-like pulses in the second layer. 展开更多

The Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus) is one of the most economically important freshwater fish in East Asia, but data on the immune genes of M. albus are scarce compared to other commercially important fish. A better understanding of the eel's immune responses may help in developing strategies for disease management, potentially improving yields and mitigating losses. In mammals, interferon regulatory factors (IRFs) play a vital role in both the innate and adaptive immune system; though among teleosts IRF4 and IRFIO have seldom been studied. In this study, we characterized IRF4 and IRFIO from M. albus (malRF4 and malRFlO) and found that malRF4 cDNA consists of 1 716 nucleotides encoding a 451 amino acid (aa) protein, while malRFlO consists of 1 744 nucleotides including an open reading frame (ORF) of 1 236 nt encoding 411 aa. The malRFlO gene was constitutively expressed at high levels in a variety of tissues, while malRF4 showed a very limited expression pattern. Expression of malRF4 and malRFlO in head kidney, and spleen tissues was significantly up-regulated from 12 h to 48 h post-stimulation with polyinosinic: polycytidylic acid (poly I:C), lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and a common pathogenic bacteria Aeromonas hydrophila. These results suggest that IRF4 and IRF10 play roles in immune responses to both viral and bacterial infections in M. albus. 展开更多

Over the last decades, the usage of PAM (pulse amplitude modulated) fluorometers for assessment of chlorophyll-a fluorescence variations became widely applied on marine macroalgae physiology and ecophysiology researches. Due to the increased use of these methods, a large number of studies, mainly relating to macroalgae ecology and physiology were worldwide reported. In this context, it was also created a mismatch of concepts about fluorescence of the chlorophyll-a and its application. Under this background, this study compile and summarize the state of the art knowledge regarding to the chlorophyll fluorescence, contextualizing the use of the PAM method with the main factors regulating photosynthesis (light, temperature, salinity nitrogen and phosphorus) in marine macroalgae. Moreover, this study also references the most used terms and shows some examples found in literature about the applicability of fluorescence parameters. The herein findings and the discussed examples, helps to emphasize the importance of fluorescence usage, that highlights the understanding of photosynthetic responses in macroalgal physiology and ecology. 展开更多

Debris flows are one of the common natural hazards in mountainous areas.They often cause devastating damage to the lives and property of local people.The sabo dam construction along a debris flow valley is considered to be a useful method for hazard mitigation.Previous work has concentrated on the different types of sabo dams such as close-type sabo dam,open-type sabo dam.However,little attention has been paid to the spillway structure of sabo dam.In the paper,a new type of spillway structure with lateral contraction was proposed.Debris flow patterns under four different spillway structures were investigated.The projection theory was employed to predict trajectory of debris flow out from the spillway and to estimate the incident angle and terminal velocity before it plunged into the scour hole behind the sabo dam.The results indicated that the estimated data were in good agreement with the experimental ones.The discrepancy between the estimated and experimental values of main parameters remained below 21.82%(relative error).Additionally,the effects of debris flow scales under different spillway structures were considered to study the scour law.Although the debris flow pattern and scour law behind the sabo dam under different operating conditions was analyzed in this paper,further study on the scour mechanism andthe maximum scour depth estimation based on scour theory is still required in the future. 展开更多

The vibrational state-selected population transfer from a highly vibrationally excited level to the ground level is of great importance in the preparation of ultra-cold molecules. By using the time-dependent quantum-wave-packet method, the population transfer dynamics is investigated theoretically for the HF molecule. A double-E-type laser scheme is proposed to transfer the population from the |v=16〉 level to the ground vibrational level |v=0〉 on the ground electronic state. The scheme consists of two steps: The first step is to transfer the population from |v=16〉 to |v=7〉 via an intermediate level |v=11〉, and the second one is to transfer the population from |v=7〉 to |v=0〉 via |v=3〉. In each step, three vibrational levels form a E-type population transfer path under the action of two temporally overlapped laser pulses. The maximal population-transfer efficiency is obtained by optimizing the laser inten- sities, frequencies, and relative delays. Cases for the pulses in intuitive and counterintuitive sequences are both calculated and compared. It is found that for both cases the population can be efficiently (over 90%) transferred from the |v=-16〉 level to the |v=0〉 level. 展开更多

It is due to the need to ensure the security and integrity of equipment, that the non-destructive tests have been increasingly used in the industrial sector. Among these, the ultrasonic pulse echo technique is the most used in industry, mainly for its simplicity and efficiency. With one transducer only, it is possible to emit the ultrasonic and receive the echo pulse. The ANNs (artificial neural networks) are artificial intelligence techniques that, when properly trained, align themselves to inspection tests becoming a powerful tool in the detection and fault identification. In this work, the echo pulse technique was used to detect discontinuities in welds, where ANNs were fed from the information obtained by digital signal processing techniques (Fourier transform), to identify and classify three distinct classes of defects. Results showed that with the combination of feature extraction by Fourier transformation and classification with neural networks, it is possible to obtain an automatic defect detection system in welded joints with average efficiency. 展开更多

From 1989-2009, 1,430 bear management report forms collected at Brooks Camp, KNP (Katmai National Park), were placed in 1 of 9 categories representing bear-human interactions of concern. Using non-parametrical statistics the categories identified dominance interactions, fish-related dominance interactions, food obtained, food-related incidents, fish stolen, property damage, and use of deterrents either decreasing or exhibiting no significant trends over time. Aggressive behavior by bears towards park staff in bear management situations increased. An elevated walkway and platform at Brooks Falls and an electric fence at the campground marked significant decrease in bear-human interactions in these areas. Changes in fishing regulations in 1998 marked significant decreases in number of fish stolen. Changes in minimum distance regulations in 2003 marked no change in number of dominance interactions or bluff charges. Efforts to facilitate visitor traffic in areas around the floating bridge have marked significant increases in number of bear-human interactions. Management and policy efforts have been successful in minimizing bear-human interactions. Habituation of bears to human activity has likely contributed to both minimizing general interactions and increased aggressive bear behavior towards management staff. This study provides examples of successful adaptive management tactics for bears and humans in a visitor oriented setting. 展开更多

The hydrogeology of first-order streams have been evaluated from 2007 to 2009 as part of the Whitetail Basin Watershed Restoration Project in Hay Creek Canyon located 25 km north of Whitehall Montana, USA. An in-depth study of the riparian area hydrogeology started in the fall of 2007 with the installation of more than 40 hand-augered deeper (〉 1 m) wells to complement preexisting driven metal pipe piezometers (± 1 m) installed in four first-order drainages. Two zones within the shallow alluvial systems were identified. This paper presents the results of a concentrated study conducted in the Hay Creek drainage within the tWO zones. Data loggers placed in some of the wells led to a gradual understanding of the water-level patterns in different vegetative types (Douglas Fir, Aspen, Willow-Alder. and Grass-Sagebrush) over the various seasons. The deeper water-level responses change from seasonal patterns to strongly diurnal during summer months. Diurnal patterns continue until leaves drop from riparian vegetation. This was expected, however, the Douglas fir trees show the same pattern. Near the end of the study a full year of water-level data showing the seasonal behavior changes were collected. Resaturation of the upper zone occurs in the fall with sources of recharge coming from up-drainage. A detailed evaluation of water-level responses from up-drainage to down-drainage piezometers occurs in a "wave-like" resaturation phenomenon that allows one to estimate the bulk hydraulic conductivity of the "alluvial system" aquifer using principles of Darcy's Law. The methods used to evaluate the hydraulic properties and seasonal water-level patterns are presented. 展开更多

One of the major management problems in and around protected areas is the intensifying conflict between local people and wildlife,especially large carnivores.Livestock depredation and human fatalities caused by attacks of carnivores are found to be serious obstacles in conflict management.This study aims to explore the patterns,costs,causes and perceptions of human large carnivore conflict in the Nawalpur area of Chitwan National Park.The patterns of livestock loss and human casualties due to large carnivores(Panthera tigris and Panthera pardus)were analysed using the secondary data reported to Chitwan National Park from 2001 to 2019.To understand the people’s perception towards carnivores and wildlife conservation,150 victim respondents were asked,with one household selected from each grid.During 19-year study period,a total of 521 incidents caused by large carnivores were reported,which included 33 human casualties and 488 livestock depredations.Tiger was responsible for the maximum conflict incidents in Nawalpur.The total relief provided for human deaths and injuries was US$17524.41,whereas US$13702.18 was used to compensate for livestock depredation in the Nawalpur area by authorities of the Chitwan National Park.More than 64%of the respondents liked the presence of carnivores in their area and had a positive attitude toward the conservation of large carnivores,even though the carnivores were responsible for livestock depredation and human injury and death.People’s satisfaction with the relief scheme provided by the government depended on ethnicity,gender,age class,occupation,education,insurance,and livestock ownership,but they believed the scheme was not effective.Hence,an effective relief scheme and awareness about the process of relief funding should be conducted in conflict areas.Conducting awareness programs for local communities about large carnivores,their behavior,and preparing predator-proof corrals would be helpful in minimizing conflict in the study area. 展开更多

Two types of the crust-mantle interaction in continental subduction zones 被引量:19

Plate subduction is an important mechanism for exchanging the mass and energy between the mantle and the crust,and the igneous rocks in subduction zones are the important carriers for studying the recycling of crustal materials and the crust-mantle interaction.This study presents a review of geochronology and geochemistry for postcollisional mafic igneous rocks from the Hong’an-Dabie-Sulu orogens and the southeastern edge of the North China Block.The available results indicate two types of the crust-mantle interaction in the continental subduction zone,which are represented by two types of mafic igneous rocks with distinct geochemical compositions.The first type of rocks exhibit arc-like trace element distribution patterns(i.e.enrichment of LILE,LREE and Pb,but depletion of HFSE)and enriched radiogenic Sr-Nd isotope compositions,whereas the second type of rocks show OIB-like trace element distribution patterns(i.e.enrichment of LILE and LREE,but no depletion of HFSE)and depleted radiogenic Sr-Nd isotope compositions.Both of them have variable zircon O isotope compositions,which are different from those of the normal mantle zircon,and contain residual crustal zircons.These geochemical features indicate that the two types of mafic igneous rocks were originated from the different natures of mantle sources.The mantle source for the second type of rocks would be generated by reaction of the overlying juvenile lithospheric mantle with felsic melts originated from previously subducted oceanic crust,whereas the mantle source for the first type of rocks would be generated by reaction of the overlying ancient lithospheric mantle of the North China Block with felsic melts from subsequently subducted continental crust of the South China Block.Therefore,there exist two types of the crust-mantle interaction in the continental subduction zone,and the postcollisional mafic igneous rocks provide petrological and geochemical records of the slab-mantle interactions in continental collision orogens. 展开更多

Human-wildlife conflict(HWC) is a global conservation issue of increasing concern,and understanding the factors driving conflict is crucial for preventing or mitigating it. In many parts of China,large human populations and increasing development has led to an escalation in HWC with both carnivore and prey species. In this paper we assess herder attitudes toward blue sheep(Pseudaois nayaur,Hodgson,1833),white lipped deer(Carvus albirostris,Przewalski,1883),red deer(Cervus elaphus,Linnaeus,1758),and marmot(Marmota himalayana Hodgson,1841) through interview-based surveys conducted in 46 households across 8 villages in Qilianshan National Nature Reserve,Gansu,China. We also examine the perceived impact of three ecological-restoration policies(anti-grazing,sustainable grazing,and grass-planting policies) on livelihoods,and how this affects attitudes toward wildlife. Herders reported neutral attitudes toward wildlife species in general,but reported negative attitudes towards blue sheep. Mixed-effects modeling revealed that herder attitudes toward the target species varied significantly across villages,but other socioeconomic variables had limited explanatory power for attitudes. Furthermore,we found that while policy implementation was negatively perceived by herders,anti-grazing policy implementation and total policy implementation were positively correlated with positive attitudes toward wildlife,highlighting a potential gap between perceived threats and actual threats. Finally,we show that the leading cause of reported livestock death is preventable disease,alleviation of which may help improve attitudes toward wildlife. 展开更多

Influence of Accompanying Anions on Potassium Retention and Leaching in Potato Growing Alluvial Soils 被引量:1

A column study was carried out to assess the influence of accompanying anions on potassium (K) leaching at potato growing sites with different soil textures (sandy loam and clay loam) in northwestern India. Potassium was applied in the top 15 cm layer of soil column at 30 and 60 mg K kg-1 through different sources having different accompanying anions (CI-, SO^-, NO3 and H2PO4-). Maximum K was retained in the top 0-15 cm layer with a sharp decrease in K content occurring in 15 30 cm layer of the soil column. The trend was similar for both levels of applied K as well as frequency of leaching and soil type. The decrease of K content in soil column after four leaching events was maximum in case of Khanaura sandy loam, while only minor decrease was observed in Hundowal clay loam when K was applied at 60 mg K kg-1, indicating higher potential of clay rich soil to adsorb K. In general, the K leaching in presence of the accompanying anions followed the order of SO4^2-≤ H2PO42- 〈 NO3 = Cl-. Highest 1 mol·L^-1 CH3COONH4-extractable K was retained when K was applied along with SO4^2- and H2PO4 anions, and the least was retained when accompanying anion was Cl-. The influence of anions was more pronounced in the light textured soil and at high amounts of K application. Higher levels of K application resulted in higher losses of K, especially in sandy loam soil as observed from the leachate concentration. Among the different K sources, the maximum amount of K leaching was noticed in the soil column amended with KC1. After four leachings, the maximum amount of K leached out was 6.40 mg L-1 in Hundowal clay loam and 9.29 mg L-1 in Khanaura sandy loam at 60 mg K kg-1 of soil application through KC1. A new type of electrical storage heater that utilizes latent heat storage and flat micro-heat pipe arrays (FMHPAs) was developed. The thermal characteristics of the heater were tested through experimentation. The structure and operating principle of the storage heater were expounded. Three rows of FMHPAs were applied (three rows with five assemblies each) with a mass of 28 kg of phase change material (PCM) in the heat storage tank. Electric power was supplied to the PCM in the range of 0.2-2.04 kW, and air was used as heat transfer fluid, with the volume flow rate ranging from 40-120 m3/h. The inlet temperature was in the range of 15-24~C. The effects of heating power, air volume flow rate, and inlet temperature were investigated. The electrical storage heater exhibited efficiencies of 97% and 87% with 1.98 and 1.30 kW of power during charging and discharging, respectively. Application of the proposed storage heater can transfer electricity from peak periods to off-peak periods, and the excess energy generated by wind farms can be stored as heat and released when needed. Good economic and environmental benefits can be obtained. 展开更多
