A composite is formed in two or more phases (i.e., organic and inorganic phases). A composite that has specified energy band gap, electrical conductivity, and tensile strength can be used as semiconductor material. The objective of this research was to study the effect of production methods, concentration and type of metal oxide filler (TiO2, A1203, Fe203, and ZnO) on structure, energy band gap, and electrical conductivity of composites. Composites were prepared using a melt intercalation process with tapioca as a matrix and addition of 1%, 3%, 5o and 7% filler concentrations, and sonication processing time in interval of 40, 50, and 60 min. Structure and morphology of the composite were analyzed using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, and TEM. UV-vis was used to measure the energy band gap while electrical conductivity was measured using a potentiostat through determination of resistivity. In addition, tensile strength and elongation were measured by ASTM 822-02. The energy band gap of the tapioca/metal oxide composite was between 4.9-1.62 eV. Electrical conductivity showed a percolation thresholds for concentrations of 3%-5% TiO2, A1203, and Fe203 and 7% ZnO. The tapioca/ZnO composite with 5% ZnO and 50 min of processing time showed a maximum tensile strength of 74.84 kgf/cm2, 6% elongation, 1.27 - 10^-7ohm^-1cm^-1 electrical conductivity and energy band gap of 3.27 eV. The characteristics described show that the tapioca/metal oxide composite can be used as a semiconductor material.展开更多

Test results have revealed that compared with the commercial catalyst RAG under comparable reaction conditions the reaction conversion rate and product distribution provided by the novel catalyst were similar, but the olefin content in gasoline obtained thereof was decreased with the octane rating unchanged along with a slight reduction of olefin content in the LPG fraction. The hydrothermal stability of the novel catalyst was better than the commercial catalyst RAG.展开更多

The metal oxide powders, together with magnesium nitrate hexahydrate pellets, were suspended in propan-2-ol inside an EPD cell. The electrodes, placed 1.2 cm apart, were partially immersed in the suspension and a DC potential applied across them. Key EPD process parameters, which include applied DC electric field, deposition time and solid concentration in suspension, were optimized through visual inspection and from UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer spectra. The highest (55%) transmittance was obtained for films with deposition time of 90 s, powder concentration of 0.01 g/40 mL, and 35 V DC (direct current) voltage. XRD micrographs confirmed that TiO2 and Nb2O5 particles were presented in the composite film. SEM (scanning electron microscope) micrographs of the composite electrode thin films showed that porous films of high quality with well controlled morphology were deposited by using the EPD technique.展开更多

By adopting some surface analytical instruments, such as scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), the tribological mechanisms of these additives were studied. In air, O_2 can react with metal to form metal oxide that can protect the surfaces of rubbing pair during the tribological tests. According to the theory of the competitive adsorption, the function of some active elements is weakened. In a vacuum environment, the additives contributed more to the lubrication performance. The sulfur-containing additives could react with Fe to produce Fe Sx and "M—C" bonds("M" represents metal). They both had contributions to the lubrication. As for the phosphorus-containing additives, they only generated the phosphates during the tests. When the sulfur and phosphorus-containing additives were applied, the generated phosphates and Fe Sx had the primary contribution to the lubrication performance during the tests.展开更多

Silicon hetero-nanowires with integrated III-V segments are one of the most promising candidates for advanced nano-optoelectronics, as first demonstrated using molecular beam epitaxy techniques. Here we demonstrate a novel route for InAs/Si hybrid nanowire fabrication via millisecond range liquid-phase epitaxy regrowth using sequential ion beam implantation and flash-lamp annealing. We show that such highly mismatched systems can be monolithically integrated within a single nanowire. Optical and microstructural investigations confirm the high quality hetero-nanowire fabrication coupled with the formation of atomically sharp interfaces between Si and InAs segments. Such hybrid systems open new routes for future high-speed and multifunctional nanoelectronic devices on a single chip.展开更多
