The present article is an analysis of the innovation system dynamics of the shrimp farming industry in Northeastern Brazil along with the forms of interaction and exchange of information and know-how and the generatio...The present article is an analysis of the innovation system dynamics of the shrimp farming industry in Northeastern Brazil along with the forms of interaction and exchange of information and know-how and the generation and diffusion of innovation characterizing its development. Brazil is the world's tenth-largest shrimp producer, with farms strongly concentrated in the Northeastern part of the country. Our findings show that the shrimp production/innovation system in Northeastern Brazil is highly institutionalized and is regulated, controlled and inspected by government agencies. In addition, the sector is now strongly networked with public universities, training and research institutions and other entities with varying degrees of autonomy and different forms of cooperation and integration. Parts of the technological innovations adopted by large companies in the sector are a spin-off of activities at universities and research centers. However, the close cooperation between public research/teaching institutions and large-scale producers is rarely extended to small and midsize businesses, whose interrelations become very fragile. The lack of communication between small producers and public research/teaching institutions makes it more difficult for farmers to assimilate new processes and to generate and incorporate innovations, compromising the dynamics of the production/innovation system of the shrimp farming industry in Northeastern Brazil.展开更多

The study considered the sociodemographical features of farmwoman and its influence on entrepreneurial and organization skills. Field research was conducted through a questionnaire and interviews. Results showed that farmwoman were keen to start innovations, use new technologies and start new income generating farm activities but their gender roles and process of socialization hinders them in such attempts. High statistical correlations were significant for sociodemographic status to entrepreneurial abilities like farm work organization, actual professional status to involvement in decision making and farm economic status to farm economical position (income).展开更多

This paper presents and analyses three such initiatives located in South Asia, with an aim to generate empirical evidence about practical aspects of the innovation process. These cases seem to suggest that the initial stages of innovation trajectory comprise of social engineering and creation of appropriate architecture of actors, after which need for new knowledge arises and favourable conditions develop for putting such knowledge into use. The cases also present how different types of agencies assume lead roles during different stages of innovation trajectory. The paper urges authorities from policy and practice to consider status of social architecture and the fact that different types of agencies play lead role in the innovation process before planning agricultural innovation initiatives.展开更多

Reactive power can be generated or abs...This paper presents a TOPF (three-phase optimal power flow) model that represents photovoltaic systems. The PV plant is modeled in the TOPF as active and reactive power source. Reactive power can be generated or absorbed using the available capacity and the adjustable power factor of the inverter. The reduction of unbalance voltage and losses in the distribution systems is obtained by actions of reactive power control of the inverter. The TOPF is formulated by current balance equations and the PV systems are modeled via an equivalent circuit. The primal-dual interior point method is used to obtain the optimal operating points for the systems for different scenarios of solar irradiance and temperature, thus providing a detailed view of the impact of photovoltaic distributed generation.展开更多

Differ from ecologists and environmentalists who regard industrial ecosystem as the natural ecosystems in which material, energy and information circulates, this paper defines industrial ecosystem as a set of factors that are vital to the development of a certain industry and their interrelationship. The industrial ecosystem consists of three sub-systems that are innovation ecosystem, production ecosystem, and application ecosystem, and subsidiary factors that include factor supply, infrastructure, socio-cultural environment, international environment and policy system. The industrial ecosystem is characterized by interdependencies, complex interactions, self-recovery and co-evolution. The development of an industry is' the result of the reaction of the whole industrial ecosystem; therefore, the competition in strategic emerging industries among countries is in essence the competition in industrial ecosystems. Those countries which are able to take the lead in setting up complete industrial ecosystem will occupy advantage in developing strategic emerging industries. This study estimates the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of coffee production in the agroforestry system in the settlements of farmers located in the West of the state of Silo Paulo, Brazil, in the region know...This study estimates the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of coffee production in the agroforestry system in the settlements of farmers located in the West of the state of Silo Paulo, Brazil, in the region known as Pontal of Paranapanema, aiming at the development of programs to support the growth of production sustainable coffee and programs to protect the coffee activity before the possible global climate change. The settlements are located in areas with sandy soils and highly degraded by human action Moreover, the region is considered marginal for the production of coffee, because it is subject to periods of high temperatures, prolonged drought and frost risk, which hinders the sustainability of farms. The environmental and socioeconomic impacts of agroforestry are analyzed through Ambitec-agro system, consisting of a set of indicators aimed at ex-post evaluation of the contribution of technological innovation to environmental, social and economic development of an agricultural activity. The system Ambitec involves: (1) general data collection about the technology; (2) application of questionnaires with adopters selected and insertion of data on impact indicators spreadsheets via platform MS-Excel and to obtain quantitative results and impacts partial indexes and aggregates the impact of technology selected; (3) analysis and interpretation of indices obtained, which vary between -15 and 15. The results indicate that agroforestry management can contribute to: (1) maintaining or increasing the sustainability of traditional coffee-growing regions in the case of sudden climate change; (2) the expansion of the coffee regions now considered unsuitable for the cultivation of coffee; (3) for sustainable regional development.展开更多
