In so doing, however, this rapid ec...The recent accelerated growth rates or efforts to emulate countries that have achieved a rapid pace of economic growth are widely acclaimed as means to uplift millions from poverty. In so doing, however, this rapid economic growth is most likely to coincide with unsustainable levels of consumption, place excessive pressure on life support systems and terrestrial sinks and foreshorten options for the future. Rather than pursuing the "Environmental Kuznets Curve"(EKC) hypothesis that higher income will bring with it the means to reduce the impacts of greater consumption, ecological economists assert that buying our way out of future scarcity with fast growth is indeed contradictory with sustainabil- ity. To better understand these contradictions and explore potential institutional innovations that may enable developing nations to better confront them (in effect,"tunneling under"the EKC), this article refers to recent experience in the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). Beginning with a brief comparative summary of major development and environmental indicators, pressures on resources and society in each of the BRICS are discussed, followed by identification of institutional and policy frameworks each country has evolved to confront the challenges of growth and sustainability. The article closes with general conclusions for further research and information sharing among developing nations.展开更多

Experimental means such as the water, electricity and gas systems which support the operation of equipment, and multiple sets of engine components (the compressor, the turbine, the combustion chamber, the structural strength etc.) which support the experimental study of the engine also badly needs to improve in the direction of comprehensive monitoring and system integration to meet the needs of high efficient experiment and management. The experiment platform can make the experimental data and the experimental process be shared in different places in real time. Improving the collaborative ability of design and experiment, improving the automatic level of the experiment and so on all need the computer, the network and the professional and matching application system to support so as to guarantee the security, the stability and the reliability of the experiment, and reduce the risk of the experiment. The creation methods of automated design system of a house foundation from blocks are discovered with Unified Modeling Language. Analyzed objects-classes: block, specification, model. Graphical system can design foundation, form specification of objects and create 3D model of house foundation. There are several types and different dimensions of concrete blocks. The program optimally arranges selected blocks so that monolithic parts will be minimal volume. Program selects a house foundation blocks from database by using ActiveX Data Objects technology, which by programming method connects drawing and database. Drawing's graphical objects have additional data from which exchange of data between graphical system and database is executed. Visualization system and example of house foundation from blocks project with specifications is presented. Creation problems of automated design system are discussed and conclusions are made.展开更多
Objective: A catastrophic earthquake struck Wenchuan region of West China on May 12, 2008 and caused more than 69 225 deaths. This study was to analyze injury characteristics and treatment of the seismic patients bas...Objective: A catastrophic earthquake struck Wenchuan region of West China on May 12, 2008 and caused more than 69 225 deaths. This study was to analyze injury characteristics and treatment of the seismic patients based on Chinese Trauma Databank, which will be helpful for improvement of future medical rescue in potential disasters. Methods: Based on inpatients' medical records of seismic patients admitted into 11 hospitals, data were registered with Trauma Database System Version 3.0. Patients' general information, causes, clinical characteristics and treatment of injuries were studied. Results: Main causes for seismic injuries were blunt strike (68.2%), crush/burying 08.7%) and slip/falling (11.5%). Slip/falling was the main cause for spinal injuries and accounted for 19. 1%, which was higher than the percentage for other body part. Extremity injuries accounted for 54.8% of all injuries. Fractures accounted for 53.1%. Lower extrem-ity fracture accounted for 70.1% of lower extremity injury and spinal fracture accounted for 85.9% of spinal injury. The proportion of spinal injuries with AIS ≥4 was higher than that of other injured locations except for the abdomen. Debridement and suturation for single injury and multiple injury patients accounted for 64.7% and 42.9% of their operations respectively. Conclusions: Blunt strike, crush/burying and slip/ falling are the main causes for seismic injuries. The most frequently injured site is extremity. The main injury type is fracture, especially for the lower extremities and the spine. Multiple injury patients were mainly treated by operation, including debridement and suturation, closed reduction and external fixation, etc.展开更多
