For example,safety-related ITS services must always be low latency and entertainment-related ITS services need high data rate. The ITS dedicated short range communications (DSRC) technology to support the safetyrelated application is still under development, while long term evolution (LTE),as the next generation mobile communication systems, offers an efficient communication platform for ITS information exchange , which can meet most ITS services requirements of latency, data rate as well as communication range. In this paper, based on the time-division duplex (TDD) mode of LTE,i.e. TD-LTE,an enhanced TD-LTE network architecture is introduced to better support safety-related ITS application with low latency requirement, and some enhanced access schemes of TD-LTE are proposed to improve the performance of supporting the high-speed IP-based ITS applications in hotspots. At last, two practical application scenarios of enhanced TD-LTE systems are given.展开更多

In this paper, a new type of tidal current power generating device which was called flexible blade turbine was put forward. A scale model testing was carried out, and results show that the models performed as expected with good hydrodynamic characteristics. Based on analysis of the results, a scale model turbine with a rated power of 5 kW was constructed, which was an optimal scheme of the flexible blade turbine having higher coefficient of power and power generation capacity. Sea trials were carried out in the Zhaitang Island Channel to evaluate the performance of the turbine. Results show that the turbine performed well, generating the power predicted.展开更多

To develop biochar utilisation with an integrated system approach, an innovative program was implemented in 2012 on a 53-ha farm in Western Australia to determine the costs and benefits of integrating biochar with animal husbandry and improvement of pastures. Biochar was mixed with molasses and fed directly to cows. The dung-biochar mixture was incorporated into the soft profile by dung beetles. We studied the changes in soil properties over 3 years. Biochar extracted from fresh dung and from the soil to a depth of 40 cm was characterised. A preliminary financial analysis of the costs and benefits of this integrated approach was also undertaken. The preliminary investigation results suggested that this strategy was effective in improving soil properties and increasing returns to the farmer. It was also concluded that the biochar adsorbed nutrients from the cow's gut and from the dung. Dung beetles could transport this nutrient-rich biochar into the soil profile. There was little evidence that the recalcitrant component of the biochar was reduced through reactions inside the gut or on/in the soil. Further research is required to quantify the long-term impact of integrating biochar and dung beetles into the rearing of cows.展开更多
