The bubble shape and drag coefficient were compared with experimental results. It is observed that the simulated results show good conformity to experimental results over a wide range of Reynolds number. In addition, the detailed flow field based on the reference coordinate system moving with the bubble is obtained, and the relationship among flow field, bubble shape and velocity is discussed. 展开更多

Arrays of large immobile boulders,which are often encountered in steep mountain streams,affect the timing and magnitude of sediment transport events through their interactions with the approach flow.Despite their importance in the quantification of the bedload rate,the collective influence of a boulder array on the approach timeaveraged and turbulent flow field has to date been overlooked.The overarching objective is,thus,to assess the collective effects of a boulder array on the time-averaged and turbulent flow fields surrounding an individual boulder within the array,placing particular emphasis on highlighting the bed shear stress spatial variability.The objective of this study is pursued by resolving and comparing the timeaveraged and turbulent flow fields developing around a boulder,with and without an array of isolated boulders being present.The results show that the effects of an individual boulder on the time-averaged streamwise velocity and turbulence intensity were limited to the boulder's immediate vicinity in the streamwise(x/d c < 2-3) and vertical(z/d c < 1) directions.Outside of the boulder's immediate vicinity,the time-averaged streamwise velocity was found to be globally decelerated.This global deceleration was attributed to the form drag generated collectively by the boulder array.More importantly,the boulder array reduced the applied shear stress exerted on theindividual boulders found within the array,by absorbing a portion of the total applied shear.Furthermore,the array was found to have a "homogenizing" effect on the near-bed turbulence thus significantly reducing the turbulence intensity in the near-bed region.The findings of this study suggest that the collective boulder array bears a portion of the total applied bed shear stress as form drag,hence reducing the available bed shear stress for transporting incoming mobile sediment.Thus,the effects of the boulder array should not be ignored in sediment transport predictions.These effects are encapsulated in this study by Equation(6). 展开更多

Since the effect of osteoclasts has been gradually recognized on bone and joint diseases, targeted researches toward osteoclasts have become a hot research field. This article reviews the relevant medical literature concerning the possible effects of the fluid shear stress (FSS) on the osteoclastogenesis chiefly from the aspects of RANKL-RANK-OPG system, the macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF), and calcitonin receptor (CTR). On the basis of the changes of the expression of osteoclastic activities, it is suggested that FSS is a potent, important regulator of bone metabolism. 展开更多

This paper describes design and calibration procedures of a new small-scale testing apparatus for evaluating soil-structure interaction. Two distinct modes of loadings, such as, direct shear and pullout loadings on flexible and rigid reinforcements are implemented by the multiple functionalities of the apparatus through the use of single loading frame, dividing mechanism, instrumentation and data acquisition systems. The design is similar to the conventional apparatus; however, it includes some key modifications to adapt additional features of reinforcements. For the pullout test, the top half of the pullout box is fixed with the bottom half of the pullout box, while for the direct shear test, the top half is allowed to slide horizontally on low friction roller bearings connected to the driving mechanism. Mechanical loadings through a steel plate are used to apply the normal load in the pullout and direct shear apparatus. A series of shear and pullout tests are performed to validate the functionality of the apparatus and to examine relationships between the reinforcements and its shear and pullout resistances. 展开更多

Effects of Heat Softening on Initiation of Landslides

Effects of heat softening on the initiation of slide surface(shear banding) in clayey slopes during fast deformation were discussed.Controlling equations considering heat,pore pressure and mechanical movement were presented.By perturbation method,the instability condition of localized zone(i.e.criterion for initiation of shear banding) for thermal related soils,such as clayey slope,was obtained.It is shown that slide surface initiates once the thermal-softening effects overcome the strain-hardening effects whether it is adiabatic or not.Without strain hardening effects,strain rate hardening obviously plays a role in initiation of shear band.During initiating process,heat is trapped inside the shear band,which leads rapidly to a pore pressure increase and fast loss of strength.The localized shear strain is concentrated in a narrow zone with a width of several centimeters at most and increases fast.This zone forms the sliding surface.Temperature can increase more than 2?C,pore pressure can increase 160% in about 0.1s inside this zone.These changes cause the fast decrease in friction-coefficient by about 36% over the initial value.That is how shear band initiated and developed in clayey slopes. 展开更多
