However, redevelopment directly or indirectly leads to displacement of low-income residents. The new residents would be of a higher socio-economic status than the previous occupants. For controlling this phenomenon, a study about the influence of displacement to the successful of sustainable multi-storey housing development for low-income society has been done with descriptive method, observation and literature study. The result of this study give knowledge that displacement always happened when the quality of building and environment is increase, the location of multi-storey housing is near city center and commercial area. Low income society voluntary displaced their units to middle or high income society, because they are not affordable for paying operational and maintenance costs. The government has to make regulations for controlling displacement on multi-storey housing for low-income society and for the successful of sustainable multi-storey housing development in urban area.展开更多

The study was carried out with respect to three income groups. A total of 36 households (12 from each income groups) were assessed using different participatory appraisals through semi-structured questionnaires. A special type of indigenous knowledge on housing pattern and food habit was explored in the Mro community, which correspond to the severe dependence on forest resources.展开更多

A number of diagonal compression, shear compression and out-of-plane tests were executed on sample panels; experimental activities included pseudo-dynamic and shaking table tests on infills and reduced scaled building mock-ups, respectively. The results of the experimental activities are presented and discussed. Experimental campaigns have been supported by theoretical and numerical investigations; based on the experimental data and on the results of detailed numerical simulations, simplified models for the design of the retrofitting intervention are hereinafter proposed. The models:, calibrated on the experimental evidence, properly consider the collapse mechanisms as well as the grid effect in the evolution of the above mentioned mechanisms.展开更多

Most of these buildings have not been designed for seismic loads. Recent earthquakes have shown that many of these buildings are seismically vulnerable and should be considered for retrofitting. Different conventional and unconventional retrofitting techniques are available to increase the strength and/or ductility of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls. This paper reviews and discusses seismic retrofitting of masonry walls with emphasis on the conventional techniques. Retrofitting procedures are discussed with regard to a case study: a stone masonry building in lrpinia region, damaged by the 1980 earthquake. The interventions are evaluated by means of finite elements with a macroelement obtained with a homogenization technique. Linear and nonlinear procedures are compared, and peculiarities of each procedure are shown.展开更多

Under the largescale relocation projects, 2874 engineered slopes are formed along with the construction of new towns. In this paper, the cutting slopes are mainly soil slopes and rock slopes. Soil slopes include residual soil slopes, colluvial accumulation slopes, swelling soil slopes, and artificial earth fill slopes, etc. Rock slopes include blocky structure rock slopes, layer structure rock slopes, and clastic structure rock slopes, etc. Varied protection measures have been used for slope protection in the reservoir area including shotcrete concrete-anchor bars, frame beams, retaining walls, slope stabilizing piles, sheet-pile walls, anchorage anti-shear tunnels, flexible protection grids, and drainage, etc. Besides, slope deformation monitoring systems have been set up to monitor deformation failure and the stability state of slopes. The protection measures have guaranteed slope safety and maintained a harmony with the urban environment and surrounding landscape.展开更多

This paper adopted both quantitative and qualitative research approach to seek information from, landlords, and manufacturers of asbestos cement products, parliament and other Government Agencies. Data was obtained through questionnaire, interview and field work survey. In all, a total of 20 questionnaires were distributed. The research emerged that about 1200 housing units roofed with asbestos cement roofing sheet were constructed by the state owned construction company between 1976 and 2000 in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis (about 12,000 nationwide), a period when the risk of asbestos was known in Ghana. The study in the newly developing areas in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis indicated that, out of every 100 housing unit being built, at least 40 of these were roofed with asbestos cement corrugated roofing sheet. It was also emerged from this research that there were no laws prohibiting the use, manufacturing or importation of asbestos products in Ghana. And this exposes maintenance workers in the building construction industries to the risk of asbestos related diseases. The research recommended that those who have asbestos materials present in their premises should take action to manage the risk so that no one will unknowingly disturb it and also provide information about the material to those who are likely to disturb it.展开更多

This paper investigates the nature and operation of Kost private rental housing developed with various conditions and arrangements, as well as its position among other dwelling types, based on on-site investigations, literature reviews and statistical analyses. It is necessary to understand the development of Kost as it shows potentials to overcome the lack of affordable and adequate housing in the country. An accurate checking process during the application of building permit may early identify Kosts. Undefined standard of operation and arrangement may hinder improvement opportunities to its quality of services. Efforts to educate the community and easy access to related regulations are necessary for improvement and compliance awareness. Moreover, increased collaborative design and public education may improve the knowledge of self-builders on building design, planning and construction. Associations of self-organized housing and platforms offering affordable design services that meet the guidelines and standards are promising ootions.展开更多
