The organic carbon storage in trees and organic carbon flow with geoposition of trees was estimated in the forest area of Chittagong (South) Forest Division within geo-position 91°47′ and 92°15′ East lon...The organic carbon storage in trees and organic carbon flow with geoposition of trees was estimated in the forest area of Chittagong (South) Forest Division within geo-position 91°47′ and 92°15′ East longitude and 21°45′ and 22°30′ North latitude. The study was conducted through stratified random sampling by identifying each sampling point through Global Positioning System (GPS). It was found that above ground organic carbon storage (t/hm^2), below ground organic carbon (t/hm^2) and total biomass organic carbon (t/hm^2) was respectively the highest in Dipterocarpus turbinatus (Garjan) (7.9, 1.18 and 9.08 t/hm^2) followed by Tectona grandis (Teak) (5.66, 0.85 and 6.51 t/hm^2), Artocarpus chaplasha (Chapalish) (2.32, 0.34 and 2.66 t/hm^2), Artocarpus lacucha (Batta) (1.97, 0.29 and 2.26 t/hm^2) and Artocarpus heterophyllus (Jackfruit) (1.7,0.25 and 2.26 t/hm^2). From the study it was revealed that organic carbon stock was the highest (142.7 t/hm^2) in the geo-position 22° Latitude and 92° Longitude and was the lowest (4.42 t/hm^2) in the geo-position 21° 50′ Latitude and 92° 2.5′ Longitude. The forest of the study area is a good reservoir of organic carbon so has a good capacity to sequester organic carbon from the atmosphere. Sustainable forest management may help to sequester more organic carbon so that economic benefit for the country and environmental benefit in the international arena are possible from the study area.展开更多

Using p...This paper has examined how the resources of the White Volta River are enhancing food availability for riparian communities in northern Ghana despite climate change and its associated effects on food security. Using participatory methods such as focus group discussions and interviews, data was collected from households and institutions in three riparian communities. The result of the study indicates that, all things been equal, cultivation of food crops along the river bank in the rainy season gives significantly high yields as compared to yields from farms farthest from the river under rain fed agriculture. Higher organic content and moisture retention capacity of river bank soils explains the yield differential and adaptability to climate change. In addition, farmers now irrigate cereal crops which were hitherto, reserved for only rainy season production. However, inappropriate irrigation practices are accelerating erosion and sedimentation of the river and thus, threaten the sustainability of agriculture and food security in the White Volta Basin. The paper therefore, recommends the adoption of IWRM (integrated water resources management) and the participation of local communities, Government and Civil Society organisations for sustaining the productive capacity of the White Volta Basin for enabling adaptation of agriculture to climate change in the riparian communities of the basin.展开更多

Therefore, critical hea...Investigations into critical beat flux at low flow and pressure conditions are of particular interest when predicting the nuclear reactor core behavior during Loss of Coolant accident (LOCA). Therefore, critical heat flux (CHF) has been investigated in a uniformly heated vertical round tube at two low system pressures and six low water flowrates. The results have been compared with two correlations which have different approaches and CHF look-up table. Good agreements have been obtained for the three comparisons at the lower sets of mass fluxes. The Bowring correlation was found to be the best to correlate the experimental results with Root Mean Square Error RMSE of 0.54% and 0.56% for the 5 bar and 15 bar system pressure respectively. A comparisons with the Shim and Lee correlation yielded RMSE of 0.23% and 5.74% for the two system pressure respectively. When the look-up table of Groeneveld et al. was used, RMES of 0.55% and 25.2% was obtained for the two system pressure respectively.展开更多

Tests are conducted using five different cross-sections (circular, semicircular, elliptical, semi-elliptical and rectangular) of micro heat pipes having same hydraulic diameter of 3 rnm placed at three different inclination angles (0°, 45°, 90°), where water is used as the working fluid. Evaporator section of the MHP is heated by an electric heater and the condenser section is cooled by circulation of water in an annular space between condenser section and the water jacket. Temperatures at different locations of the MHP are measured using five calibrated K type thermocouples. Heat supply is varied using a voltage regulator which is measured by a precision ammeter and a voltmeter. It is found that thermal performance tends to deteriorate as the MHP is flattened. Thus among all cross-sections of MHP, circular one exhibits the best thermal performance in terms of heat flux dissipation followed by semi-elliptical, semi-circular, elliptical and rectangular cross-sections. Moreover, its heat transfer capability also decreases with decreasing of its inclination angle. Finally, a correlation is developed which covers all the experimental data within +7%.展开更多
