Generally, temperature is the principal factor that induces estivation or hibernation in the sea cucumber. The present study provided insight into the physiological adaptations ofA. japonicus during the three types of inactivity (hibernation, estivation, and starvation) by measuring the oxygen consumption rates (Vo2) and biochemical compositions under laboratory conditions of low (3℃), normal (17℃) and high (24℃) temperature. The results show that the characteristics of A. japonicus in dormancy (hibernation and estivation) states were quite different from higher animals, such as fishes, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, but more closely resembled a semi-dormant state. It was observed that the shift in the A. japonicus physiological state from normal to dormancy was a chronic rather than acute process, indicated by the gradual depression of metabolic rate. While metabolic rates declined 44.9% for the estivation group and 71.7% for the hibernation group, relative to initial rates, during the 36 d culture period, metabolic rates were not maintained at constant levels during these states. The metabolic depression processes for sea cucumbers in hibernation and estivation appeared to be a passive and an active metabolic suppression, respectively. In contrast, the metabolic rates (128.904-11.70 μg/g h) of estivating sea cucumbers were notably higher (107.85±6.31 μg/gh) than in starving sea cucumbers at 17℃, which indicated that the dormancy mechanism here, as a physiological inhibition, was not as efficient as in higher animals. Finally, the principle metabolic substrate or energy source of sea cucumbers in hibernation was lipid, whereas in estivation they mainly consumed protein in the early times and both protein and lipid thereafter.展开更多

A number of initiatives were taken for grafting this species to obtain better seeds for oil production, without the basic information on their ecology and management. To address this knowledge gap, we quantified the composition, structure and regeneration dynamics of Olea ferruginea forests in Malakand Division, Hindukush range of Pakistan. In the present study, five communities dominated by Oleaferruginea were identified using Ward's agglomerative cluster analysis. Total tree density ranged from 153-26o2 plants/ha, and basal area from 19.55 to 2353 m~ ha-1 with Olea having a relative density of 51% to 87% and basal area of 48% to 93%, respectively. The density of juveniles of the dominant and subordinate tree species were generally low which reflect their narrow distribution in the study area. Size-class distributions of O. ferruginea disclosed a bell-shaped pattern, indicating that forests were heavily exploited by local inhabitants in previous periods and recently by armed forces owing to security risks in the study area. The age (mean max. 300±34 years) and annual increment (3.2±1.2 years/cm) indicates that the species is long lived and generally slow growing among the different broad leaved species studied so far. However, the oldest trees can be found by the exploration of large diameter trees in the area. In addition, we found a stable linear relationship between the age and diameter (r2 = o.779), indicating that diameter is a good predictor of age for this broad leaved species. In view of its relatively slow growth, longevity and positive ring-width characteristics O. ferruginea seems to be a suitable choice for dendroecological and dendrochronological studies in lesser Himalayan and Hindukush ranges of Pakistan. The results obtained from this study may help in understanding the composition, structure and regeneration dynamics of other subtropical broad leaved species.展开更多

Identification and quantification of principal and trace elements which compose this volcanic glass allow source tracking. The present study proposes a investigation methodology, which was developed on a sample set composed by archaeological obsidian findings from Neolithic sites in Latium; three different analytical techniques are compared: SEM-EDXS, ED-XRF and LA-ICP-MS, in order to gather a wide data set to be compared with data in literature and to be processed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for assigning a provenance to each find.展开更多

Germinated embryos-germs were detached from endosperm after 24 hours from the start of soaking. Cell nuclei have been allocated from embryos-germs and cleared, and then from their heteropolymer suprastructures (nucleoplasm, chromatin loosely bound with nuclear matrix and chromatin tightly bound with nuclear matrix, and nuclear matrix) were extracted by increasing ionic strength of solution. From isolated nuclear suprastructures, non-histone proteins were separated from histones using ion exchange chromatography. Trypsin-like complexes from non-histone proteins and histone blocks were isolated using the affinity chromatography. The Arg-X (tryptase) activity was assessed by cleavage of Arg-X bonds in the arginine-enriched protein protamine. Hypersensitivity to the Arg-X proteolysis in trypsin-like complexes detected at the level suprastructures of chromatin tightly bound with the nuclear matrix was shown. The most active changes of the nuclear proteome have occurred at the level of the non-histone proteins and the core histones (H2A + H2B) (H3 + H4) of induced to growth embryos-seedlings of winter wheat (compared to the initial spring form of wheat). Perhaps hypersensitivity to the Arg-X activity of the trypsin-like complexes in the non-histone proteins and the core blocks of chromatin tightly bound with nuclear matrix have been entrenched during the transforming of the winter wheat from the initial spring wheat.展开更多

A positronium atom has four internal spin states which are interconvertible through s-wave interactions. The quantum fields of all spin states of positroniums and photons are simulated from first principle in quasi-one-dimensional system using the truncated Wigner method. This method warrants us a full treatment of the depletion of positronium fields and the spin mixing induced by s-wave collisions between positronium atoms. Particularly,it yields the momentum spectrum of the emitted photons and the photon-photon correlations.展开更多
