Two weeks after a severe spinal cord contusion, rats can regain weight-bearing abilities without therapeutic interventions, as assessed by the Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan locomotor scale. However, many human patients suffer from permanent loss of motor function following spinal cord injury. While rats are the most understood animal model, major differences in sensorimotor pathways between quadrupeds and bipeds need to be considered. Understanding the major differences between the sensorimotor pathways of rats, non-human primates, and humans is a start to improving targets for treatments of human spinal cord injury. This review will discuss the neuroplasticity of the brain and spinal cord after spinal cord injury in rats, non-human primates, and humans. A brief overview of emerging interventions to induce plasticity in humans with spinal cord injury will also be discussed.展开更多

The modified Galerkin's method was used to discretize partial differential Eqs. The mine hoisting system was used to the example to analysis the relation between the load, velocity and transverse vibration of rope. The in situ tests were illustrated to evaluate the proposed mathematical model. The results showed that the modeling method can well represent the transverse vibration of rope.展开更多

The robotic hand is underactuated, using tendon-pulley transmission and a parallel four-linkage mechanism to realize grasp. The structure design and a basic grasping strategy of one finger was introduced. According to the established round object enveloping grasp model, the relationship between the contacting and driving forces in a finger and stable grasping conditions were expounded. A method of interpolation and iteration was proposed to obtain the stable grasping gesture of the cable-driven hand grasping a round target. Quasi-statics analysis in ADAMS validated the variation of grasping forces, which illustrated the feasibility and validity of the proposed analytical method. Three basic types of grasping gestures of the underactuated hand were obtained on the basis of the relationship between the contact forces and position of a grasped object.展开更多

This paper investigates and analyses the deorbit performance and mission applicability of the electrodynamic tethered system. To do so, the electrodynamic tethered deorbit dynamics with multi-perturbation is firstly formulated, where the Earth magnetic field, the atmospheric drag, and the Earth oblateness effect are considered. Then, the key system parameters, including payload mass, tether length and tether type, are analyzed by numerical simulations to investigate their influences on the deorbit performance and to give the setting principles for choosing system parameters. Based on this and given an appropriate group of system parameters, numerical simulations are undertaken to study the impact of the mission parameters, including orbit height and orbit inclination, and thus to investigate the mission applicability of the electrodynamic tethered deorbit technology.展开更多

The elements were partitioned into five fractions: exchangeable, bound to carbonates, bound to iron and manganese oxides, bound to organic matter, and re- sidual. The contents of elements A1, Ti, K, Fe, Mn, Pb, Co, Cu, Ni, and V in each fraction were determined and their percent- ages were calculated. Residual fraction is a dominant speciation for most studied elements except for Mn and Pb in the core sediments. For the elements A1, Ti, and K, residual fraction accounts for more than 95% of the total metal concentration. The concentrations of all studied elements in the exchangeable fraction, carbonate fraction, and organic fraction are relatively low. The metal levels in the iron and manganese oxide fraction are relatively high and this fraction represents another prevalent speciation. Also in this fraction, the metal concentrations and percentages are higher in the core section above 80 cm than those below 80 cm. Especially for Mn and Pb, the fractions bound to iron and manganese oxides account for more than 50% of the total metal concentration for the upper 80 cm section. Hydrothermal components mainly occur in this fraction. And the downcore variations of metal contents and percentages reflect the variations of hydrothermal inputs to the sediments. The high metal levels in the upper core indicate the enhancing influence of hydrothermal activities around on the core H9 during its late stage of sedimentation. The accumulation rates of hydrothermally derived Fe, Mn, Pb, Co, Cu, Ni, and V were evaluated based on their concentrations in the iron and manganese oxide fractions in this study. The results show that the accumulation rate of hydrothermally derived Mn is similar to those obtained from the Mid-ocean Ridges and Lau Basin. However, hydrothermally derived Fe and Cu present a relatively lower level.展开更多
