Interventions comprised different modes of ischemic preconditioning (IP) as well as pharmacologic pretreatment by α-lipoic acid (LA). METHODS: Several groups of rats were compared: sham operated animals, non-pretreated animals (nt), animals receiving IP (10 rain of ischemia by clamping of the portal triad and 10 min of reperfusion) prior to sustained ischemia, animals receiving selective ischemic preconditioning (IPsel, 10 min of ischemia by selective clamping of the ischemic lobe and 10 rain of reperfusion) prior to sustained ichemia, and animals receiving 500 1μmol α-LA injected i.v. 15 min prior to the induction of 90 min of selective ischemia. RESULTS: Cellular damage was decreased only in the LA group. TUNEL-positive hepatocytes as well as necrotic hepatocyte injury were also decreased only by LA(19 ± 2 vs 10 ± 1, P〈 0.05 and 29 ± 5 vs 12 ± 1, P 〈 0.05). Whereas caspase 3- activities in liver tissue were unchanged, caspase 9- activity in liver tissue was decreased only by LA pretreatment (3.1 ± 0.3 vs 1.8 ± 0.2, P 〈 0.05). Survival rate as the endpoint of liver function was increased after IP and LA pretreatment but not after IPsel. Levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO) in liver tissue were decreased in the IP as well as in the LA group compared to the nt group. Determination of pro- and anti-apoptotic proteins showed a shift towards anti-apoptotic proteins by LA. In contrast, both our IP strategies failed to influence apototic cell death. CONCLUSION: IP, consisting of 10 min of ischemia and 10 min of reperfusion, ischemia/reperfusion injury protects only partly against of the liver prior to 90 min of selective ischemia. IPsel did not influence ischemic tolerance of the liver. LA improved tolerance to ischemia, possibly by downregulation of pro-apoptotic Bax.展开更多

However, the detailed mechanism of which remains an unresolved problem. In the present work, the characteristics of Fushun coal before and after oxidation by nitric acid were investigated combined with elemental composition, pore volume and pore size, Zeta potential, FT-IR, and 13C solid NMR spectrum analysis. The results show that the inorganic substance inlaid in coal are dissolved by ni- tric acid, which results in the decrease of coal ash content and increase of pore volume and pore size. Furthermore, there exist obvious chemical reactions between nitric acid and the functional groups of coal including aromatic ring carboxylation, side chain alkyl of aromatic ring oxidation and aromatic ring nitration. Among these reactions, some led to the increase in content of carboxyl, aliphatic carbon connected with O and humic acid carbon, while others caused the reduction of aromaticity, methyl carbon, substituted aryl carbon and side chain.展开更多

AC fluidization could enhance COD removal by 22%-30%. In such a combined process, synergetic effects on PNP and COD removal was found, with their removal rate being enhanced by 137.8% and 97.8%, respectively. AC could be electrochemically regenerated and reused, indicating the combined process would be promising for treatment of biorefractory organic pollutants.展开更多

A modified Staehli procedure was used to synthesize sodiumbirnessite in an alkali medium by O_2 oxidation. The effects of preparative parameters on thesynthesis of birnessite, such as pretreatment on solutions with N2, reaction temperature, O_2 flowrate, fluxion velocity of the reaction suspension, and dehydration conditions were investigated. Thefluxion velocity of the reactive suspension and O_2 flow rate significantly influenced thesynthesis of birnessite. Vigorous stirring raised the fluxion velocity of the reaction suspensionand easily allowed synthesis of pure crystalline birnessite. However pretreatment of the reactingsolutions with N_2 and the reaction temperature had little effect on the synthesis. Diffusion of O_2was the controlling step during the course of oxidation. The optimum synthetic conditions for purebirnessite were: a NaOH to Mn molar ratio of 13.7, an O_2 flow rate of 2 L min^(-1), and oxidationfor 5 hours with vigorous stirring at normal temperatures. The chemical composition of thesynthesized pure birnessite was Na_(0.25)MnO_(2.07)·0.66H_2O.展开更多

Further study showed that adding appropriate amount of calcium chloride to SBR can improve the quality of effluent. The removal rate of COD and color was 84% and 80%, 36%, 96% higher than those of traditional SBR respectively. The results of continuous experiments and biophase observing showed that calcium chloride accumulation increased the sludge production slightly while the sludge dewatering characteristic was improved.展开更多

The adsorbent obtained from sludge contributes to sludge disposal, while reducing the fresh ferric chloride dosage. The enhanced removal efficiencies of turbidity, UV(254), COD, total phosphorus (TP) are 90.48%,77.80%,50.62% and 96.33% respectively when 3 g/L of the sludge-adsorbent was used in the coagulation process. The maximum adsorption capacity (Q°) of the sludge-adsorbent for COD was over 184.52 mg/gand that for TP was 4.98 mg/gadsorbent optimally as the dosage of the adsorbent was 0.6 g/L. When 10 mg/L of ferric chloride and 0.6 g/L of the adsorbent were used at the first stage simultaneously, the enhanced removal efficiencies of turbidity, UV(254), COD, TP were 83.33%,52.30%,48.84% and 88.96% respectively. The pH value in the raw water played a significant role in the coagulation and adsorption process. The optimum pH value was between 4 and 11.展开更多

In this study, a lot of experiments are carried out to study the influence of various factors on the aniline destruction rate in the SCWO process with a novel experiment setup. The experimental results show that the aniline destruction rate rises with the increase of the residence time, the reaction temperature and the reaction pressure. A dynamics analysis of the aniline SCWO reaction is conducted and the dynamic equation is obtained.展开更多

The method consists of carrying out the oxidation reaction at the anode where pollutants are transferred into non-toxic substances, by decomposing into simpler compounds or transferring into oxidation form. RuO2-based Dimensional Stable Anode (DSA) is a technologically good and important electrode for water treatment because of its unique characteristics such as high thermal and chemical stability, low resistivity and low overpotential. This paper reviews the methods for fabricating RuO2-based electrodes that can be used in electrochemical water treatment. Depending on the different fabrication routes, RuO2 electrodes will possess the different electro-catalytic property and stability.展开更多

The first proposed method is Adaptive model predictive controller, the second is Adaptive Neural Network Model Predictive Control, and the third is Adaptive neuro-fuzzy sliding mode controller. These methods are applied to a multivariable nonlinear system as an ammonia–urea reactor system. The main target of these controllers is to achieve stabilization of the outlet concentration of ammonia and urea, a stable reaction rate, an increase in the conversion of carbon monoxide(CO) into carbon dioxide(CO_2) to reduce the pollution effect, and an increase in the ammonia and urea productions, keeping the NH_3/CO_2 ratio equal to 3 to reduce the unreacted CO_2 and NH_3, and the two reactors' temperature in the suitable operating ranges due to the change in reactor parameters or external disturbance. Simulation results of the three controllers are compared. Comparative analysis proves the effectiveness of the suggested Adaptive neurofuzzy sliding mode controller than the two other controllers according to external disturbance and the change of parameters. Moreover, the suggested methods when compared with other controllers in the literature show great success in overcoming the external disturbance and the change of parameters.展开更多
