The effect of different conditions of alkali pre-treatment on chemical properties of agar was evaluated. Agar was extracted by various concentrations of NaOH (4%, 6% and 8%) and heated at different temperatures (70 ℃, 75 ℃ and 80 ℃) for different durations (2 h, 2.75 h and 3.5 h). The yields-molecular weight (Mw) and sulfate contents of extracted agar were analysed and characterized by FTIR spectroscopy. The yield was significantly increased at these treatments from 23.29% to 30.86%. Mw studied by HPLC ranged from (.12.45 ± 0.21) × 10^5 to (8.60 ± 2.40) × 10^5 Da. FTIR bands show sulfate groups in C4 and C6 ofgalactose and no sulfate group were found on both C2 of galactose and C2 of 3,6-anhydrogalactose. All treatments showed a high sulfate content that ranged from 5.4% to 10.1%. These properties were found to be significantly affected by the alkali pre-treatment concentration (p 〈 0.05). In conclusion, agar extracted in this study was considered acceptable for industrial application and the optimal conditions for extraction were found to be at 6% NaOH at 70 ℃ for 2 hours.展开更多

The structural and electrochemical properties of NaxCoO2 during sodium ion insertion/extraction process are studied based on first principles calculations. The calculation results of crystal structure parameters and average intercalation voltage are in good agreement with experiment data. Through calculation of the geometric structure and charge transfer in charging and discharging processes of NaxCoO2, it is found that the oxygen atom surrounding Co of the CoO6 octahedral screens the coulomb potential produced by sodium vacancy in NaxCoO2, and the charge is removed from the entire Co-O layer instead of the Co atom adjacent to sodium vacancy when sodium ions are extracted from the Na CoO2 lattice. Thus, during the insertion/extraction of sodium ion from Na CoO2, the CoO6 octahedral structure undergoes small lattice distortion, which makes the local structure quite stable and is beneficial to the cycling stability of the material for the application of sodium ion batteries.展开更多

To convert waste liquid generated during production into a useful resource, extract from waste liquid was isolated by column chromatography and studied by the pyrogallol autoxidation and 1,10-phenanthroline-Fe^2+ oxidation methods. Results show that the extract scavenged about 91% of the superoxide anion radical at a concentration of 1.4 mg/mL and 24% of the hydroxyl radical at 3.3 mg/mL. Four compounds were isolated and identified from the extract: 2,4-dihydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-azine; 2,4-dihydroxy- 1,3-diazine; 3-O-β-D-quinovopranosyl-(1→2)-4-O-sodium sulfate-β-D-xylopranosyl]-holosta-9(11)-ene313,12β,17α-triol; and 24-ethyl-5α-cholesta-7-ene-3β-O-β-D-xylopyranoside. All of these compounds are known in A. japonicus, and were found in the waste liquid for the first time.展开更多

Antioxidant activity was evaluated through 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay and β-carotene/linoleic acid assay. The essential oil and methanol extract were individually tested [disc-diffusion assay and evaluating minimum inhibition concentration (MIC)] against a number of bacteria. The essential oil showed strong antimicrobial activity against bacteria tested whereas the methanol extract almost remained inactive. In contrast, the extract showed much better activity than the essential oil in antioxidant activity assays employed, e.g. in the inhibition of free radical DPPH and β-carotene/linolcic acid systems. In the former, the extract was able to reduce the stable free radical DPPH with an IC50 of 55.3μg/mL while that of the oils were 10,630μg/mL. When compared to BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), a synthetic antioxidant, both showed weaker antioxidative potential. Similarly, in β-carotene/linoleic acid assay, these samples were not effectively able to inhibit the linoleic acid oxidation; exhibiting only 24% and 36% inhibitions at 2 mg/mL, respectively; both were far below than that of BHT. Total phenolic constituent of the extract was approximately 4.5 g/100 g as gallic acid equivalent. Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis of the oil resulted in the identification of 45 constituents, ei^-piperitone epoxide, pulegone and piperitenone oxide being the main components. The results indicate that essential oil and extract ofM. longifolia L. hudson may be used as natural preservative in food against the agents of foodborne diseases and food spoilage.展开更多

Eucalyptus camaldulensis is a fast-growing hardwood species with a wide distribution in Iran and can be introduced as appropriatematerial to compensate the wood shortages of the natural forest. Kraft pulping was performed under different cooking conditions and, based on the relations of pulp yield and kappa number, bleachable kraft pulp at screened yield of 43.3% and kappa number of 31.3 was selected for DED (Chlorine Dioxide-Alkaline Extraction-Chlorine Dioxide) bleaching and its bleachability was studied at different kappa factor in D~ stage. The results indicated that the bleachable kraft pulp from this species has high kappa number at acceptable screened yield and to complete the delignification in the bleaching process, higher kappa factor may be needed in DED bleaching sequence. The main reduction in final kappa number and yield loss were observed at kappa factor level of 0.2 but by further increase in kappa factor up to 0.4, more development were observed in optical properties but at lower opacity.展开更多

Bark powder ofDrypetes gossweileri is used by farmers in pest management in Central Africa Republic. Hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol were used for extraction bark powder by maceration. Insecticidal activity of the extracts was tested on Sitophilus zeamais, Tribolium castaneum and Rhy_-opertha dominica. The mortality rate, the number of surviving insects and the number of emerged insects were measured variables. Calculated mortality was obtained by applying Aboth's formula. The variables are submitted to variance analysis, model with four factors (plants, insects, doses and time) in Minitab 14. The results of analysis showed that the mortality rate has a very highly significant variation following extracts, doses, insects and time considered (P 〈 0.001). Extracts with ethyl acetate and dichloromethane of D. gossweileri are effective against S. zeamais and R. dominica at high doses (1, 0.5, 0.250 g/10 mL of solvent). These effective extracts were characterized by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Molecules such as l-isothiocyanatomethyl, thiocyanic acid, phenylmethyl ester and other were characterizated. These results may consolidate traditional use olD. gossweileri in pest management.展开更多

The extract contained alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, phenols, tannins, f[avonoids and terpenoids in some medicinal plants while others contain some only of these phytochemical components. Allelopathic effect of the various concentrations of the extracts on the soil algal diversity was also investigated. Wollea saccata was the only algal species disappeared from all applied investigated plant extracts. Phormidium richardsii, Monoraphidium braunii, Eunotia verneris and Nitzschia bilobata were the highly sensitive algal species to all applied shoot and root extract from all tested plants, they disappeared from most of the studied plants. On the other hand, Phormidium animale and Chlorella neustonice were highly tolerant algal species to all applied extracts. Counts of Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae were decreased by addition of some investigated medicinal plants extracts such as Juncus subulatus, Convolvulus arvensis and Euphorbia hirta. So the authors can use these plants extracts in biocontrol of the nuisance of algal bloom or any other microorganisms. Also, these plants may be useful to recover eutrophic water which needs further investigation.展开更多

Information on K-release characteristics in soils of central Iran is limited. The objectives of this study were to determine K release characteristics and correlations of K release rate constants with K extracted by different chemical methods in surface soils of ten calcareous soils of central Iran. The kinetics of K release in the soils was determined by successive extraction with 0.01 mol L-1 CaC12 in a period of 2-2017 h at 25±1℃. Soil K was extracted by distilled water, 0.5 mol L-1 MgNO3, 0.002 mol L-1 SrC12, 0.1 mol L-1 BaC12, 0.01 mol L-1 CaC12, 1 mol L-1 NaC1, 1 mol L-1 boiling HNO3, 1 mol L-1 NH4OAC, Mehlich 1, 0.002 mol L-1 SrC12 + 0.05 mol L-1 citric acid, and ammonium bicarbonate-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (AB-DTPA). A plot of cumulative amounts of K released showed a discontinuity in slope at 168 h. Thus, two equations were applied to two segments of the total reaction time (2-168 and 168-2 017 h). Cumulative amounts of K released ranged from 55 to 299 mg kg-1 in 2-168 h and from 44 to 119 mg kg-1 in 168-2 017 h. Release kinetics of K in the two time segments conformed fairly well to parabolic diffusion, simplified Elovich, and power function models. There was a wide variation in the K release rate constants. Increasingly higher average concentrations of soil K were extracted by distilled water, Mehlich 1, SrC12, CaC12, SrC12 + citric acid, AB-DTPA, MgNO3, NaCI, NH4OAc, BaCI2, and HNO3. Potassium release rate constants were significantly correlated with K extracted. The results of this study showed that information obtained from mathematical modeling in two reaction time segments can help to estimate the K-supplying power of soils.展开更多
