The iron minerals in red-mud were extracted by oxalic acid solution. The content of Fe (calculated in Fe203) in red-mud was reduced from 17.6% to less than 1% after being treated by 1 mol/L oxalic acid solution at 75 ℃ for 2 h. The Fe(Ⅲ) oxalate solution obtained was then irradiated by UV light, resulting in the precipitation of Fe(Ⅱ) oxalate. Under UV photocatalysis, more than 90% of Fe(Ⅲ) oxalate in the extracted solution was transformed into the precipitation of Fe(Ⅱ) oxalate crystallite (fl-FeC2O4·2H2O). The filtrate from the Fe(Ⅱ) oxalate precipitate filtration could be reused in the next cycle. The mechanism ofUV photocatalysis precipitation was also discussed.展开更多

Methods T4 lysozyme gene was inserted into expression vector pPIC9K of Pichia pastoris with the fusion at N terminal. The recombinant plasmid was digested by Sal I and then introduced into prepared GS115 competent cells by electroporation. Positive clone and multiple inserts were screened. The secreted proteins in the supernatants were tested. In the agar holes diffusion assay, our expressed protein showed significant antibacterial circles. Results T4 lysozyme protein inhibited the growth of staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus Pneumoniae. There was no difference in the bactericidal activity and the amount of protein expression between the single and multiple copies. The antibacterial activity of expressed protein remained the same during the heat stability test. Conclusion T4 lysozyme was successfully induced and expressed in Pichia pastoris. There is no relationship between copy number and expression. T4 lysozyme protein is heat stable.展开更多

This is done through composite analysis of sea surface height (SSH) observed by satellite altimeter during October 1992-July 2009, and correspondingly derived sea surface geostrophic currents. During E1 Nifio/La Nifia years, the SSH in the tropical North Pacific Ocean falls/rises, with maximum changes in the region 0-15~N, 130~E-160~E. The decrease/increase in SSH induces a cyclonic/anticyclonic anomaly in the western tropical gyre. The cyclonic/anticyclonic anomaly in the gyre results in an increase/decrease of NEC transport, and a northward/southward shift of the NEC bifurcation latitude near the Philippine coast. The variations are mainly in response to anomalous wind forcing in the west-central tropical North Pacific Ocean, related to ENSO events.展开更多

In-situ light availability control is one of the most commonly used technologies to suppress algae in lakes and reservoirs. To develop a better understanding of the effects of light on algal growth, specific density, colony size and sinking loss, Anabaena flos-aquae(cyanobacteria) and Scenedesmus obliquus(green algae) were evaluated in varying light scenarios. The results showed that the specific density and colony size of these two species varied during growth, and there were obvious differences among the light scenarios. At the end of exponential phase, S. obliquus incubated under light-limited condition maintained a higher specific density and formed larger aggregates, whereas A. flos-aquae formed a longer filament length. Both species exhibited higher sinking loss rates with lower light availability. These results implied that the sinking loss rate was not always constant but should be considered as a variable response to the change of light availability, and in-situ light availability control might result in a significant increase of the sinking loss of algae due to the change of size and specific density, thereby further affecting the algal biomass in the water column.展开更多
