(M.) chinensis Tarbinsky were compared. Results show that the chromosome numbers of the two species fit 2n (♂) = 17 = 16 + XO, in which three pairs of autosomal and sex chromosomes were terminal chromosomes, and the other five pairs of autosomes were metacentric chromosomes. These are diagnosis characters for Chorthippus. However, these two species can be distinguished by the different chromosome formula (CF) and the relative length (RL). The CF in Ch. (M.) aethalinus is K (2n, ♂) = 6m + 11t = 6L + 6M + 4S + XO, whereas that of Ch. (M.) chinensis is K (2n, ♂) = 6m + 11t = 6L + 8M + 2S + XO. In addition, we also found that the relative lengths of sex chromosomes in the two species were different from each other. The sex-chromosome of Ch. (M.) aethalinus is located at the fifth position and its relative length is 8.33% whereas that of Ch. (M.) chinensis is at the eighth position and its relative length is 5.53%. These results show that significantly different genetic features exist for the two species of Chorthippus.展开更多

Such interactions are ubiquitous in diverse areas of science and molecular engineering. In the present work, we have made assessment on some modern density functional methods including B97-D, BLYP-D3, M06-2X, XYG3, and force field models including CHARMM, AMBER, MM3, AMOEBA on six important interaction modes of bz2. Our results not only highlight the usefulness of these cost-effective methods, which can be used as economic substitutes of the expensive CCSD(T) for complex real-world systems, but also indicate their weakness in the description of the π-π interactions, which points to the future direction for further improvements.展开更多

The cyanotoxins produced by many bloom forming cyanobacteria severely affect the health of animals, fishes, birds and human beings. Different physical and chemical factors contribute towards bloom formation. Ten bloom forming cyanobacteria were isolated from natural blooms of northern India. The strains were purified and enriched in the laboratory. The aim of this study was to understand the influence of iron on growth, pigmentation and antioxidative activity of enzymes-catalase and ascorbate peroxidase of bloom forming cyanobacteria. Results show that different strains of bloom forming cyanobacteria attain optimum growth at varied concentration of iron. The cyanobacterial strains like Synechocystis aquatalis, Merismopedia glauca, Anabaena variabilis and Anabaena iyengarii exhibit maximum growth at low iron concentration (2 pM) while some species require higher concentration of iron for their optimum growth namely, Arthrospira platensis show optimum growth at 10uM, and Nostocpaludosum shows maximum growth at 100uM concentration of iron. It was also noticed that chlorophyll and phycobiliprotein content also varies with change in iron concentration. The activity of antioxidative enzymescatalase and ascorbate peroxidase was noticed in all ten cyanobacterial strains. In the light of the findings, it seems that Arthrospira platensis possess maximum catalase and ascorbate peroxidase activity. Increment in concentration beyond optimum value leads to deterioration in the growth, pigment content and enzymatic activity of the cyanobacterial strains. Knowledge about the factors influencing growth of bloom forming cyanobacteria will help to work out ways for eradication of hazardous cyanobacterial blooms.展开更多

The samples were collected in mid-autumn, a period when the lake’s upper layer undergoes rapid cooling. At the time of sampling, a strong vertical temperature gradient was present in the lake, with surface temperatures of ~14℃, and near bottom (50 meters) temperatures of ~8℃. The concentrations of dissolved CFC-12 and CFC-11 increased with depth, as expected from the higher solubilities of these gases at lower temperatures. Atmospheric measurements made at the sampling site at the time of the cruise, showed that CFC-11 and CFC-12 saturations in the near surface samples were 100 % and 106%, respectively. For the deepest sample (52 meters) CFC-11 and CFC-12 saturations were 102 % and 126 %. Because the surface layer of the lake responds to changes in atmospheric CFCs on a time scale of several weeks, the higher than equilibrium concentrations of CFC-12 observed at the time of sampling may reflect earlier episodes of elevated levels of atmospheric CFC-12 in this urban area. High concentrations of dissolved CFCs in runoff or industrial effluent might also lead to elevated CFC levels in the lake. The cold, deep water of Lake Washington is relatively isolated from the effects of surface gas exchange except during winter, and the supersaturations observed in the deep layer may reflect periods of elevated atmospheric CFC-12 levels from the previous winter season. These results were compared to summertime profiles of CFC-11 and CFC-12 made in 1994.展开更多

METHODS: Sixty cases of NPC were studied using polymerase chain reaction based microsatellite analysis with genescan and genotyping techniques. RESULTS: LOH was detected on 13q in 78% of NPC tumors, high frequency LOH loci (more than 30%) clustered to 13q12.3-q14.3 and 13q32. On chromosome 14q, LOH was detected in 80% of NPC tumors; high frequency LOH loci clustered to 14q11-q13, 14q21-q24 and 14q32. High frequency LOH at 13q31-q32 correlated with a lower level of EBV infection; LOH on chromosome 14q was closely associated with poor differentiation of NPC tumor cells. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that in NPC, LOH on chromosome 13q and 14q are common genetic events, and putative tumor suppressor genes (TSG) residing in these regions may be involved in tumorigenesis.展开更多

The present paper originally documents a case of BBD from Yongxing Island (Xisha Islands, South China Sea), and further probes the reasons of this abnormal phenomenon. Prior to 2007, corals at northern reef-flat of Yongxing Isand were in healthy growth. Catastrophic coral mortality occurred between 2007 and 2008. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing and PCR amplification, with universally conserved primers, were applied to detect the conta- gious bacterial community of the microbial mat. The results demonstrated that six bacterial divisions constituted the clone libraries derived from the BBD mat, and that Cyanobacteria are the most diversely represented group that inhabit BBD bacteri- al mats, despite the fact that species in five others divisions (a-Proteobacteria, y-Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Verrucomi- crobia and Actinobacteria) are also consistently diverse within the BBD mats of diseased coral. Other factors such as coral bleaching, typhoons, ocean acidification and crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, are not primarily responsible for the coral mortality within such a short time interval. The disaster expansion of BBD associated with Cyanobacterial blooms is a more likely mechanism impacting these coral reefs. Excessive human activity enhances the eutrophication of the marine water of the reefal region and may result in occurrence of the BBD.展开更多
