In order to reduce the influence of bullwhip effect, sales data are applied to forecast orders of the next period instead of ordering data. Mobile agent is applied to achieve the sales data from retailers in the data preparation. And the converting approach from sales data of retailers to prediction data is proposed. Autoregressive and moving average (ARMA) model is introduced to forecast orders and a comparison amongst final prediction error (FPE), Akaike information criterion(AIC), Bayes information criterion(BIC) and Akaike's corrected information criterion(AICC) criterion is shown. The sample test verifies the superiority of AICC; therefore it is applied to identify ARMA order. Forecasting architecture is established and then the prototype system is tested, at last a case shows the orders prediction of the next quarter and verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.展开更多

This paper analyzes the meanings of three language units from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and their Chinese renderings by seven translators. These three units are recollect, handsome, and come upon the town. By studying the linguistic, situational, or cultural contexts of each language unit, the analysis shows that of the renderings of these three language units, the accuracy rate is three out of seven, one out of seven, and two out of seven respectively. The paper points out that one of the most important causes of the low accuracy rates is that these language units denote old-fashioned meanings. Another cause of the low accuracy rates is that some of the translators are not careful enough in their identification of the meanings of these language units. The paper suggests that in the translation of a classic novel like Pride and Prejudice, translators need to analyze carefully the linguistic, situational, or cultural contexts of a tricky language unit in the novel for very likely it denotes an old-fashioned meaning. Translators could also consult and compare what a tricky language unit means in other places of the novel, use an encyclopedic dictionary instead of a dictionary of contemporary English, and study the notes on tricky words in the novel made by established scholars.展开更多

The main result attained is the existence of a deterministic mathematical model that relates phonetics to associated mental images starting from the simplest linguistic units in agreement with the human response to different acoustic stimuli. Moreover, there exists two level hierarchy for natural language understanding. The first level uncovers the conceptual meaning of linguistic units, and hence forming a corresponding mental image. At the second level the operational meaning is found to suit, context, pragmatics, and world knowledge. This agrees with our knowledge about human cognition. The resulting model is parallel, hierarchical but still concise to explain the speed of natural language understanding.展开更多

It can be either internal (addressed to the inhabitants of the unit) or external (aimed at people who are not residents of the unit). The subject of the presented studies will be culture promotion of the region. One of the areas of promotion, little appreciated in Poland so far, is culture and culture heritage which are of greater and greater importance for the regional development. Culture heritage can be a resource to strengthen the region and improve the conditions for economic growth. Culture goods constitute an important factor in the development of socio-economic region. They increase tourist attractiveness contributing to the development of tourism and agro-tourism in the area. The rich history, multi-layered and diverse culture heritage, both tangible and intangible, can be one of the main assets of raising the competitiveness of the given region in the country and the European Union (EU). It should be assumed that in a market economy town or municipality operate in a manner similar to enterprise, they produce products and services offered to the internal market (municipality) as well as to external one (surrounding of the municipality). Competitive conditions require the use of all tools to increase the effectiveness of the operation, including marketing tools. Being a marketing issue a product, which is offered by a city/town, can be considered in two aspects: first as a mega-product (i.e., a city/town as a whole), second as a distribution of a mega-product for individual municipal sub-products. Presented concept of a product offered by a city in its two distinctions can be also applied to a municipality. Market-based approach in relation to territorial units is usually called "territorial marketing". Alternatively, they can be also called "spatial marketing" and "area marketing". Depending on the type of territorial units and the scope of marketing activities various concepts are used (e.g., urban marketing and municipal marketing). Currently in Poland these concepts are generally related to basic units of the administrative division of the country namely to urban and rural municipalities. Therefore, for this type of activities one can suggest the term "municipal marketing".展开更多

The earlier Prescriptive and Descriptive Schools might have set the pace for this controversy but the present dilemma is much deeper. Learners and even teachers are sometimes at quandary as to how to proof that a particular word belongs to a particular class. This is because a word may sometimes belong to several classes, in context as in the word "watch" which can belong to different classes. This paper therefore tries to provide answers to the problem of word class classification by using a morphological and syntactical evidence to prove that English words follow a particular range of inflections and belong to strictly ordered particular categories and do not change their class arbitrarily. This is in line with the natural perfect order of homogeneity in creation which precludes a specie from merging effectively with another specie without having to undergo some fundamental changes. Other variables were also looked into and it was concluded that teachers and learners as well, can rely on this sub-categorization approach as a reliable paradigm for their assumptions concerning word classes.展开更多

Both of them cannot meet the requirements of improving the non-English major students' argumentative writing scores. So based on the Lexical Approach theory, taking the College English Integrated Course 4 (LI, 2003) as the main teaching material and lexical phrases as teaching and learning units, this study explores the effectiveness of the Lexical Approach in improving non-English major students' argumentative writing through classroom activities of input, absorption, and output of lexical phrases. The results show that lexical phrases have more effects on students' English competence than single words. They can help to improve the argumentative writing scores and cultivate an interest in learning English independently.展开更多

The results show that, during L2 vocabulary teaching process, the proper application of interlingual strategies can effectively facilitate the memorization of new words, and the bilingual method (both English explanation and Chinese translation) is welcomed by most subjects. Therefore, using L1 as a means of semantization or as a tool for checking and validating L2 learners' understanding of word meaning should not be completely rejected, especially for adult Chinese EFL learners.展开更多

Sixty sixth-grade Chinese-speaking children at an elementary school in Taipei City were recruited. Forty-four three-level of storybooks from Kizclub were collected and analyzed. Fifteen minutes reading instruction was followed by the use of CLAN on storybooks for 25 minutes. Children were given written and spoken vocabulary tests after each cluster of storybook reading period. There were three main findings of the study. First, young EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners' word learning was enhanced through multiple exposures to the shared and unique words from the storybooks. Second, word instruction in isolation prompted written and spoken word learning beyond word instruction in context and repeated reading. Third, the results had pedagogical implications on the value and feasibility of language teaching with storybooks in promoting EFL students' word learning by using CLAN, and the limitations of the study were provided.展开更多

It entails sufficient comprehensible input and active interaction. It is found that the theme-based modules/units, if organized and performed meaningfully and closely related to the learners' life and experiences, will best integrate these three elements in the process of the second language learning, which is geared in some major aspects to the whole language philosophy. 'Writing to learn' is a product of reverse thinking. In a theme-based module/unit, a writing task of the same theme is put at its end with some requirements for language enhancement. It serves as an engine to learn other skills. In reality, it is not writing alone that functions in the SLA, but writing at the final stage that requires comprehended input and good qualitative interaction together to fuel SLA. An experiment of 20 weeks shows the positive results for the model.展开更多

Flory and Stockmayer(F-S theory)studied it based on two fundamental assumptions:(1) independent and equivalent vinyl groups;(2) no intramolecular cyclization. However, until now its applicability to FRP of MVMs(especially regarding the extent of intramolecular cyclization) is still controversial. In this paper, Monte Carlo simulations are used to study FRP of divinyl monomers by two kinetic models:with/without cyclization models. The results of the simulations are compared with the calculated gel points based on F-S theory and the experimental data. It is found that the intramolecular cyclization has a negligible impact on the polymerization process and the gel point before gelation, which are in agreement with the prediction by F-S theory, but the effect becomes significant above the gel points.展开更多

Also it has been previously shown that the non-word repetition task is an efficient assessment tool to screen out those children suspected with SLI. Based on this premise, the present study examined whether the non-word repetition task can be a suitable screening tool to detect language disorders for preschool children in Mandarin Chinese in China. A non-word repetition task was adapted specifically for this purpose. This study examined differences in non-word repetition performance of Mandarin-speaking preschool children screened by a criterion-referenced diagnostic test of specific language impairment (SLI) (the value of Cronbach Alpha at 0.86). A sample of 282 children were administered the diagnostic test, and a total of 23 SLI suspects were screened out as their language ability measures deviated from the mean by 1.5 SDs. Results indicated that children with SLI made no error with respect to tone in Mandarin, but they showed great difficulty in non-word repetition skills compared to age-matched controls. The findings confirmed that the non-word repetition task is a culturally nonbiased index of language disorders, and that two syllable non-words can be used to identify language disorder.展开更多
